You can hear the calm and freedom in Catherine's voice. So very glad you listened to your body and took time to recover. Also so glad that you did not lose more than your hitch! You lead such a lovely life that fits who you are. It's so rare that a person truly lives, but you are doing it. I wish you many, many years of happiness through your experiences hiking remarkable places. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I live in Colorado and in 2002 the Gov declared ''It looks as if all of Colorado is burning today." We didn't see clear skies for months. Yet, we had no idea what was to come in the next 20 years. I had a mountain property then and as a result of those 2002 fires and living at high altitude I developed severe breathing issues and asthma. For years I had chronic bronchitis and bronchial pneumonia. I could hear the strain in your breathing during this episode, but I'm glad you're on the mend. Give your lungs time to heal and they will return to normal.

That was a good call to listen to yourself and end your backpacking trip. I hope you're fully recovered from the smoke. Sorry that your trailer hitch broke but fortunately you got it fixed. Your campsite in the Sierra Nevada was just the medicine you needed, especially with its smokeless blue skies. Mammoth Lakes are awesome! Thanks for bringing us along on your adventures. Jenny

So glad you are feeling better. Love all your videos.
But being a science type of thinker, I have to make one "petty" correction because I hear this all the time. It does not seem hotter at the same temperature when you are at higher elevation than lower elevation because you are closer to the sun. Recall that the sun is about 93 million miles from the earth. A difference in elevation of even 14,000 feet when compared to millions of miles will have no effect on perceived temperature. Rather the primary reason for the sense that the sun is more intense is because there is less atmosphere to block out UV rays from the sun. For every 1.000 feet in elevation gain the atmosphere decreases causing UV rays to increase by about 4-5%. As a result, an elevation of 5,000 feet as compared to sea level, will increase UV exposure by about 20-25% on average. There are other factors as well that have nothing to do with proximity to the sun, but I'll disregard those for now.
Sorry for being a jerk. I still love you. Please don't hate me.

This video is a lesson in perspective, patience and peace and calm. I have also tended to get in a tizzy when things go wrong while I’m on the road. You’re so correct that we learn from these experiences. I kinda think that’s just one of the reasons it’s so valuable for each of us to step outside of our comfort zones. I’ve learned to ask myself, “What can I learn through this experience?” Turn out one experience often informs my handling of the next. It’s all good. Thank you for setting a good example for all of us.

Bolt on trailer hitchesI never trust so the best and strongest hitch is welded on to the frame. The warranty may be voided on new trucks if you weld on a hitch. Also the receiver should be solid steel and the trailer ball should be at least 2 inch diameter on the bolt end. Don't second guess anything when towing especially the trailer brakes. You don't want the tail wagging the dog ( fish trailing ). I would make sure your trailer brakes has a break away feature and the battery that activates it is good. Good luck and " May Your Trail Have a Good Tread".

Hi Cat , charter subscriber here ❤. I've watched you grow up on UA-cam. You've really evolved into quite the seasoned Nomad ! As a full-time Nomad off-grid guy myself, I don't really have an overabundance of time to watch other people's adventures, too busy living my own 😂. But I always enjoy watching yours ! The reason being , you're one of US ! Not casting shade on the folks who tow 100K rigs and drive 100K trucks to boot . But you're down with the struggles just like us . I wouldn't trade this life on the road for anything. I can never see myself back at a 9 to 5 job . There's a sense of freedom in this lifestyle that can never be replicated. Great advice when you say stay calm, roll with the punches . What a great , insightful video ! You have to show the other side of the road , not just the glitz and glamor. So again , thank you for yet another awesome opportunity to tag along. Be safe out there and may God bless you in all your endeavors.

Truck Drivers are required by federal law to complete a pre trip and post trip inspections on their vehicles and trailers. Did a quick search on UA-cam and there are several videos on RV Pre Trip inspections. An RV pre trip inspections is not the same thing as an RV Pre Trip check list it is an inspection of both the tow vehicle and trailer to ensure it is road worthy. Love your videos and especially the spectacular scenic shots whether driving or backpacking.

So glad the hitch issue didn't happen while driving! Now I have to check mine! I was advised to use a creeper to slide under my trailer from time to time to check for missing bolts, cracks in welds, holes in the insulation and loose wiring. This has been good advice as I have spotted minor issues before they became serious issues. I also follow up any inspection with a beer. Keeps me motivated.

      Well stated...
Excellent way to maintain equipment - as it should be. Frequent inspections - can save lives. Pre trip inspection is a good safety habit!!!

That's so scary about your hitch! I didn't know those bolts could fail. Always check the trailer tires and axel. We had leaf spring shackles fail on our Springdale trailer. Completely sheared off. With all the dirt roads you tow on, check everything before taking off. Glad you are feeling better.

So sorry all that happened to you as you said that life. I’ve hauled my different Rigs from horse trailers to fifth wheels I’ve never heard of a hitch failure like that. So happy you’re safe and getting it replaced. Hope you left your trailer in a safe place. Sending you positive energy from Malibu California 🙏🏼❤️🤙🏼

Funny and messy thing happened this morning. I had noticed in your videos that you use butter in your skillet when making your Kodiak Cake pancakes and they looked delicious. I normally don't use anything in my non-stick pan, but this morning I wanted to try some butter when making my pancakes. The first one came out great, but when on my second pancake, I tried to swish the wet batter around in the pan to spread it out a bit and I didn't realize how slippery the pan was now with the butter. All of my pancake batter flew out of the skillet and all over my stovetop making a huge mess which burned all over the burner surface.

Thanks for taking me along. I'm so happy this didn't turn out bad bad. The hitch receiver is an easy replacement. I suggest you get your AC fixed as well. Better yet, I hope you are somehow budgeting for a new truck. There are so many things that can go wrong with an old truck. My 2008 F250 is likely on the way to a salvage yard because of diesel stupid. Good luck.

You're dang lucky you wasn't involved in a horrible accident, and thank goodness you had a man with you.
There's just some things that a man is needed for and thank goodness Joey was there with you.
I was a school bus driver for a season in Dysart School district in Glendale, Arizona.
And every morning, religiously, I had to go over the outside of that bus like a fine-tooth comb. Check the tires with a baseball bat. Make sure my turn signals worked. Make sure the door open and closed properly because It wasn't mechanical. It was electrically controlled.
So pay attention to your surroundings.
    Your truck, your camper everything.
Safe travels and safe equipment, saves lives.
Thank goodness you caught it in time.
The heavenly angels were watching over you, Catherine.

Very interesting video. Glad disaster was averted with the hitch. I generally try to make sure mine gets a full inspection every oil change. We are not full timers, but more than 1/2 the mileage on my tow vehicle is towing, so that hitch is very important for sure. Continued safe travels....

That really is a beautiful place to be! I’ve spent a fair amount of time in the Mt Laguna area and have enjoyed it every time. These were work trips so I didn’t have the time to relax and enjoy, but other than the gas prices it may be the perfect spot!

16:49 funny story. You drove by my home off Benchmark Rd In Augusta MT. I had decided to head south for winters and had just purchased a 17’BigFoot TT. Wondering if it was possible to tour the Southwest in a TT and not a van, I immediately found you here. Thank you for the confirmation that it’s possible. Great lessons already. Spend more time place to place and stay calm through the inevitable mishaps. Be where my feet are during my winter travels. (Grew up in Pacific Beach) TY❤
