The point you made about the essay collection is actually why I struggle with self-help nonfiction - it completely focuses on the personal and ignores the systemic. It's so simplistic, this idea that everything that's wrong with your life is because of a personal shortcoming and all you need is a change of mindset in order to achieve your goals in life. A lot of these self-help books completely ignore the fact that in so many cases there are real systemic barriers to the goals you want to achieve or the place you want to reach in life, and no amount of inward reflection/ introspection can change what's wrong with the inherently unjust systems that make up the world. Which is why nonfiction that draws attention to those systemic issues of injustice and prejudice appeals to me a lot more.
agreed and thats also why those popular self help books are majorly written by white able bodied people. as someone whos autistic and has adhd yes theres alot of things I can do to improve my life but like you said alot of our struggles dont come from us inside but from outside through society etc When I was younger and didnt knew I was neurodivergent I def ran face first in this wall of trying to change every possible thing about myself because I didnt realize jet that a lot of my problems will never be changed that way. needles to say it is a very frustrating thing to do I am not totally against self help books but those I found helpful where mostly focused less broadly and not comming from the stand point: if you actually show up for yourself you will achieve all your goals 👍
The reason Emma Chamberlain can’t finish a book is because she keeps picking pretentious books that she think she’s “supposed to” read instead of things she’ll actually enjoy. Yes, those are going to read it sometimes, but she should probably just pick up some thing that aligns with her interests outside of reading.
I said this a couple days ago, someone on twitter was bashing "tik tok" books and I was like "Do you really think a 14 year old kid is going to read Brother's Karamazov and suddenly start to enjoy reading??" that's insane to me, I got into reading because of Twilight, I read the second book in english (not my first language) because I was too anxious too wait for the translation, if that's not a good thing for a teen, I really don't know what is 😂
yeh i agree with this, the classics are great but just because they’re classics doesn’t mean they’re enjoyable to everyone. I think she just wants to seek “well-read” instead of just reading for fun
How to Break Up With Your Phone was a life-changing book for me. I listened to the audiobook and then read through a physical copy while actually doing the steps the author suggests and it has permanently changed the way I use my phone, for the better.
Wow Kayla, I think you hit the nail on the head for me when you spoke about people with anxiety and reading. My husband always comments on why I have the TV playing the background when I read and I've actually never really thought about it. Now it makes sense because I do have such bad anxiety that I have been subconsciously doing things to make it a comfortable environment for myself to read in and I almost can say that I read the best when there is more noise vs less noise around me. I had to leave a comment because you literally just gave me a lightbulb moment and also it feels so nice to know I am not the only one who does this. ❤❤❤
Kayla, as a Brazilian, instead of the Alchemist, I think you should read from other Brazilian authors. Start with Machado de Assis, any novel from him, really, but I recommend The Alienist (very short) or Dom Casmurro!
@@anaos1004Do you enjoy any of the Alchemist other books. I enjoyed his other books more than that one. Of hand I think it was the bruja or witch. And Veronica decides..
Oooh if we're getting sequels, I'd love to see another personality type reading list. But instead of your enneagram or zodiac, its someone else's, like maybe a family member. I'd also be interested to see you do an experiment where you sample books from celebrity book clubs to see which suits you best
Alchemist is one of the biggest snoozefests I've ever read 😂 100% agree it could be aged down and it might work better potentially but I honestly don't see even a bit of the hype 🙃
Something I love about your channel is that you will have videos like this that are follow ups on older videos. It is just like having an old friend from school days say hi to you at a coffee shop and catching up. Lol
The Alchemist is a mandatory read for a lot of high schoolers and I remember loving it so much when I read it my sophomore year and my husband says the same thing. I wonder if we would feel the same re-reading it as adults!
I think the first book is referring to stoicism and it just didn’t translate properly. In stoicism, they believe that suffering exists, but that most suffering exists within the mind and not in reality. One of the chief philosophers states that most of what we worry about and struggle with exists only in our minds. It’s more about personal perceptual suffering. Like seeing something bad happen and internalizing it rather than accepting that bad things can and do happen without any one to blame. When you do that, your imagination and thinking goes wild and disregards the actual truth of reality. That’s why mindset changes are stressed in stoicism. You must not let yourself be tormented by your mind and self-centered perceptions.
Yeah I think the collection most definitely could have benefitted for the reader having more explanations, footnotes, and just generally longer paragraphs provided instead of just lists, to get many of the intended points across effectively. The author having background knowledge is definitely great for informing her process and granting an implied credibility, but not great for every reader who may be coming in at the ground level. Thanks for the insight 💕
I wanna read it specifically for this part because I’ve found that one passage that was highlighted is true for me, it’s at the root and foundation of what I’ve been doing for the past 4 years (healing work). As you said, it’s the mind but also the nervous system, and I know if I’m judging someone there’s something there, and oof does it get messy
Hey Kayla! I have been away from your channel for a while cause I haven't been reading much but OMG I've got to say: your hair is looking so stunning like wow that shade of red suits you so so well
All I can say is, if you haven’t finished a book in a year, why on earth would you try reading crime & punishment?! I read 50-75 books a year and I haven’t been able to finish that book yet.
Before reading poison for breakfast I had never read anything by Snicket. I only chose to read it BECAUSE it was his first book written in that style FOR ADULTS. (So it’s so funny to me that you thought it was a children’s book 😂). And I loved it because it was something light and airy to breeze through after reading a bunch of heavy reads, and it was super nostaligc feeling becuase I have always enjoyed every form of visual media of A Series of Unortunate Events.
I love this video idea, even though I had never heard of VSCO girls ever! I am old though… that’s prob why 🤷🏼♀️ And also, WHY DOES EVERYONE READ COLLEEN HOOVER???!!!!
She's popular and easily palatable for non readers. While I have never gotten into her work, I think it's great she's helped get so many people into reading.
I liked de 101 essays because every time I'm into a bad moment it's so easy to forget "obvious" things, it's easy for me to get stuck into a negative spiral so it's good to read something that it's obvious but at that moment didn't seem like it 😂
This isn’t a comment on Kayla or meant to be negative towards anyone in particular but I can tell based on Emma Chamberlain’s book choices and how she’s struggled through trying to finish a single book in a year that she doesn’t seem to enjoy classics and shouldn’t force herself to read them just because they’re somehow deemed “more intellectual” or whatever. Just read for fun girlie 😟 I had the same problem when I thought I “had” to read the classics too before I realized I can just read what interests me
Ahh got so excited when I saw this pop up!! I loved the original one (as with your fun tbrs / experiment vids / themes vlogs in general) and this made my day to see that you did a sequel 💛
East of Eden is very good while not my favorite it is a very good one. I love Of Mice and Men more but that’s a heartbreaker. Loved your vlog! Your Tic-tac-toe board is freaking adorable!! 🍓
The original VSCO girl video was one of the first videos of yours I watched! I rewatched it a few days ago in anticipation of this vlog, and the vibes all around are ✨immaculate✨
Especially with chronic pain, changing a mindset won’t make it any less true that I live with pain every single waking moment. Sure not focusing on it constantly and not spiraling is helpful, but it doesn’t make it ever go away, I still suffer
I know you said you haven't read Daisy Jones because you don't like books about celebrities, but Daisy Jones has a super interesting format and I think you might enjoy it because of that. It really felt to me like reading a documentary, if that makes sense. Like, when I was done reading, I felt like I had just watched a real documentary about a band that really existed. I've personally never read anything like that.
I know that you loved Imortal Longings by Chole Gong and I would recommend reading her YA series These Violent Delights as a Romeo and Juilet retelling. I loved all of the nods in it to the original play.
Ohhhhh the right move is actually a really great book, caught up is the third book in the series which I also loved, one of my favourites of the year❤️ I didn’t love much of the books in the romance/fantasy/thriller categories this year🤣

the alchemist is almost a joke in brazilian literature (hated by every single literature teacher) and its such a shame that its the most famous brazilan novel :( would HIGHLY recommend machado de assis, jorge amado, clarice lispector and lima barreto for classics and raphael montes for horror/thriller (people call him the brazilian stephen king)
