Improvising Guitar Solos For Complete Beginners

- There’s nothing quite like listening to one of your heroes perform a jaw-dropping guitar solo. The guitar can be such an emotive instrument when played in the right way. In this lesson, Andrew Clarke will show you how to start playing your own solos by using one simple scale shape and a few basic concepts.
For the entirety of this lesson, you’ll only need to use one small E major scale shape. It’s important to start simple. Down the road, you’ll be able to tie this small shape into many more shapes spanning the entire fretboard. Take some time to completely commit this new shape to memory before jumping into the rest of the lesson.
The whole point of improvising is being creative. So beyond the basic rules set in this lesson, don’t be afraid to go wild with this jam track in the style of John Mayer's "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room". Come up with your own licks and ideas. Add this to your daily practice time and you’ll be composing your own guitar solos in no time!

Wow you have a horrible humming sound out of that amp really annoying.yowsa that third you keep hitting on the eString whew curdles the skin whew.
Every time this guy says "totally ok" or "totally fine" I feel that much more motivated to keep going and not give up. Like Justin, he realizes that half the teaching battle is making sure students don't get frustrated and give up - props for that!

I have learned to appreciate mistakes. It means that I'm in the process of learning and learning is the way to perfection. I might not become a second EVH musically but skill wise I'm sure I can get somewhere close.

You totally will! :) We all had the same "starting location". As Mr.Fujita always saying "be kind to yourself". Practice makes perfect. I'm always focused on reaching the highest goal and thats sometimes wrong, cause I didnt give myself a chance to just stand still and look backwards on that path. I mean my shoes are in dust already and I should look on them, smile and say "you made a great job dude, so, whats next?" :) I wish you dont push hard on yourself, and hope you're still practicing and doing well :)

its okay I have been playing guitar for little over 2 years. Just a couple of months ago I understood more or less how to improvise. ( The problem with learning on UA-cam is figuring what you should learn and in what order)

This is a very clever way of learning "to play with the music" and not repeating for ever a minor pentatonic scale. This method gives you a big open door on what music is: listening first, then playing. Good job and thank you a lot.

Been playing guitar since I was thirteen and after twenty seven year's of studying music theory, this is by far the best introductory lessons ever. Teaching students to dip our toes into the vast ocean that is improvisation in a gentle manner serves to demystify a practice that's genetically rooted in music theory is wonderful. Played violin in middle and high school, always thought scales were pointless and didn't know what to do with them, this video really helped me understand what they're for and how to utilize them. Awesome video that's extremely helpful.

@@Prayudi__A I've watched a lot of teachers and he's the best so far , start with the Practical Guitar Theory series there are 3 parts so far they helped me understand the major scale not just memorize it

Have to agree this is one of the most practical, succinct and useful lessons I have seen on improvisation. Rather than fall back on the Am pentatonic "box" at 5th fret like so many other lessons, this major scale provides more than enough notes to play around with in the one position and very quickly makes some creative sounds. Very easy to then find the same root note "E" on other strings and play same scale from there and before you know it, you have opened up the fretboard. Well done.

What a great video finally helped me run my fingers on something other then the minor pentatonic and this scale is a lotttt of fun and a lot you can do with it.

Getting back into music after a 5 yr hiatus upon entering the work force after college and having no time to practice. Been so stressed with the pandemic at my hospital, so this was a nice primer to get me back into my groove. Thanks so much. I feel like I’m playing better than when I used to gig. The fact you are so positive in your approach is refreshing. Usually if I ever picked up my guitar it was aimless noodling and chording to keep my hands in practice. This made me feel more musically aware than I’ve ever felt. All of my learnt music theory Is coming back. Buying a looper here soon to make my own chord progressions to improv over. Thanks a million.
I really like how the audio in this lesson isnt highly produced. You can hear the hum of the guitar in the background, you can hear a little fret buzz on some of the notes he plays... it's a very minor thing but very encouraging for a beginner, since they most likely will have a sonic experience similar to this. It makes the goal way more approachable and realistic

I have been playing by ear for over 30 years. A couple of excellent guitar teachers on youtube and find out i am still a beginner. Well intermediate now. I atill can't improvise yet. No problem I am on my way.
Sometimes you pick up your guitar and dont know what to do... Then you go back to repeating things you know and played it dead and you need to play something else but dont know how or what. I am glad to stumble upon this video, gets me going again, thx bro

Yeah, that's about when I walked away from theory (no more lessons after HS) and have been "noodling" ever since (or playing rhythm). Noodling just took on another level!!!
Very nice lesson! I always found playing solos the scariest and most difficult thing to learn on guitar but this makes them seem a little less daunting! I like how clearly the teacher explains everything and how he keeps us motivated to not give up 🙂

i¨ve plaeyd guitar over 30 years and still this way of thinking or getting closer of free improvising never crossed my mind right this way but thank you so much for giving ideas how to re-think things on fretboard
The thing is I have good melodies in my mind, I can hum it but can't play it on a guitar.
Keep trying it will come ! I guarantee it !
Just hum/sing that melody and then record it into a software and then you can analyse them and match them up to the fretboard. That’s why I do, I’d argue it’s better for creativity because it’s straight from your head
@Jens Devriese I use logic but think you can use anything, you just get a mic and sing it then can analyse the notes within the software after you’ve recorded it
I’m working on playing what’s in my head also & it’s taking time but getting better …sing it or hum it as you play …that helped a lot! ✌️

Watched countless of videos trying to teach this and couldn't get anywhere until now, amazing teaching with perfect examples.
Ive watched many tutorials on improvising with no luck. This video had me improvising within 15 minutes. Even tho it was simple, it felt genuine and for once I was just making stuff up and it felt and sounded good. Very awesome tutorial

Holy frick, thank you so much for this video. I’ve been playing guitar for about 3 years now, but I hit a big road block, and just haven’t really progressed. I knew chords, I knew the pentatonic scale shapes, but I never really did anything with that knowledge. I just played songs I liked and wanted to learn how to play, but with the help of you and that backing track, something just clicked in my brain and things are making so much more sense. THANK YOU

Holy crap, excellent tip. Im legitimately two months into guitar. Im a music theory nerd so i wanted to apply the knowledge. And THIS is genuinely the key to unlocking the fretboard, even if just ONE piece of it.
Taking a modular approach to learning is always the best route. I love how you broke it into progressions, involving learning the scales OVER a track. Thats much more fun and inspiring than playing over a metronome, and is possibly more effective! Considering i can hear the shapes blending as i work on different scales!

Those single coils are a bit on the noisey side
Sadly, it's the studio that's noisy. These pickups are "noiseless". We get the same issue with every humbucker too.
GuitarLessons I have the same issue at my house. When I plug my amp in an outlet without grounding, the noise appears... solved the problem grounding all the outlets
