Dude I feel you. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years and lived in penotoic shapes for half of it lol. I learned a lot of different scale patterns early on but stayed "noodling" and wondering why all my solos sound the same haha. This is a great resource for sure! How's your playing going? I feel like I'm finally getting the sound I'm looking for.

I’m just sharing an idea here but for me the thing that got me out of Pentatonix boxes when I just was disgusted with myself, was to just decide to do single string playing for everything for like 3 to 6 months. Play melodies on single strings, play everything on single strings, and then play on two strings. I did a lot of practice for about two years they added advantage you get to play horizontally up and down because it’s the only way to get the notes you need. I’m just sharing a thought that worked for me not that I’m Pat Metheny, but I’ve had to bust out of a lot of ruts and the thing that works best is having a love and constant curiosity, and knowing that there is an answer that would simply lead to another question.

I love Tomo! But in real life i'm a guitar teacher (Learned the old school style before internet) and some times there's a new generation of guys who needs over explanation and tabs for absolutely everything, it seems like a generational way of this era of super information, most of the things i learned was from the records and from fellow musicians who play with me over the years, maybe i tried several years to explain in a detailed way something i could play without thinking long time ago. When i became a teacher kind of wrap a lot of knowledge myself on what i was doing. Glad you can apreciate this way of teach and this is the most voted coment too!! I think that i was starting to stay alone in this idea.

  • @VexylObby

So what I found to be the "5 Tips" from this vid were:
-Make a more patient decision on what to play. (Don't just play B minor pentatonic scale, play B minor pentatonic SOUND)
-Play your instrument with respect. No need to play it HARD and loud all of the time. Spice tastes better when mixed with other things!
-Shapes should be known. Try to locate multiple voicings and locations of triads, for example. Then your playing is easily more about notes than scales.
-What are you thinking?! Think about things that can distract you while you can still play. Food is a great thing to think about! (Side note: I think its always fun to associate flavors with sounds we can make, so try to cook up some riffs!)
-? Try to repeat licks over chord progressions. Applying similar shapes to the progression will add familiarity of the same movements, but variance because of the shape moving through the scale.

Yes and a good way to know where to go and what is possible on chord progressions, before going creative with solo is also to see the connections between the chords, this make the difference, and a way to practice it is to endlessly arpeggiate the chord progression and try to spot where it resolves with one or two steps between a triad note and the next chord triad

You are the first person I've heard suggest not visualizing pentatonic shape, but hearing pentatonic sound. It's so refreshing to hear it suggested sonically instead of visually. There's absolutely nothing wrong with visual referral when you're just beginning, but there comes a point where you have to start trusting your ears and allow them to lead you outside of your comfort zone. It's okay to make mistakes along the way. Mistakes bring growth.

I wish there was a major school of guitar instruction that didn’t involve playing across all six strings in these visualizations at all but I think it’s our society where people want quick results and they want a system and when you do that people thinking gets very rigid and they’re stuck in the system. I’m actually glad I learned how to play guitar guitar before the Internet! All we had was cassette tapes and frustration! But you couldn’t just get tabs for everything

recently, I’ve come back to it, and with all the additional knowledge I’ve gained about modes and triads and chords and so on, not to mention having better overall technique, I find the pentatonic box to be rich and amazing with the proper flourishes.

You are obviously an intelligent man, in addition to a great guitarist. This lesson is worth more than many jazz lessons I've taken, as it is directly applicable. If I had a gig later today, I could very easily use what you just taught me. Thank you for this awesome lesson, that teaches more in10 minutes that most hour long lessons. Also, that Strat is beautiful. Something about a red Strat is always cool!

Still I find myself stuck in the scales a lot and it’s been one of my things to watch these “stop noodling” videos and see everyones different takes and wisdom on how to stop sounding “scale-y”! Thanks for your wisdom and take on this ! Very much appreciated this channel Rulez ! Awesome beautiful guitar sounds here ! Love it ❤️🙏👍👍👌

This is a real guitar teacher. Rather than launching into an amazing solo in order to show off and intimidate his audience, Tomo puts himself in the students shoes and shows it like it is in real life when you practice. I've learned more in 5 minutes here than in the previous 100 hours from other so called teachers. And not only is this a valuable lesson, Tomo actually goes through all the chords of the piece. I hate it when a lesson shows you what to do with one or two chords and then leaves you hanging. Thanks Tomo 😊👍

This humble person truly provides me an inspiration to become the musician I want to be. And there is a big reason - although there are many notes and many scales that go well with each other, these are mere models that human beings have made to _make sense_ of the beautiful audio perceptions that our brain makes. Unlike many youtube channels out there, @TomoFujitaMusic really focuses on teaching you _how_ one can break those models or barriers and explore beyond. IMHO, this is where one's true musical creativity lies. Please keep sharing your ideas and thoughts, and continue to be an inspiration for us.

You know a person is very good at guitar when he doesn't need reverb to make things interesting. Most of the time Tomo plays straight to the amp and produces his sounds from his technique and his dynamics and not effects! He also givess great advice because he is a teacher and sees this on a daily basis. That is why I respect this man alot!
