The Cranberries - Dreams | Reaction!

  • I was surprised to learn that I've only done one Cranberries reaction, which I did almost 2 years ago. So, that had to change. This song is regarded as one of the band's best, and it's easy to see why. When Dolores sings about love, you just about melt. And I have to mention that Fergal Lawler's rolls and play overall here was just fantastic. It's no wonder these guys were once on top of the world.
    Thanks for watching!

Agreed. Love Nick's straightforward, no bullshit approach. No stupid gimmicks. Just feels genuine.

Always learning with your trivia & input, especially at the end of your reactions. I usually know the tune, but sometimes wind up embarrassingly surprized with things I didn't know about the song or band... in a good way though of course :)

You're basically emotionally dissecting the entire song. 😊Not just her vocals but the instruments. Most folk focus on Dolores, and to be honest as an Irishman she is a fantastic celtic, kind of elfish songbird but..the lads, her lads, are bloody good as well. Ye have a good ear!

Great start to 2024 with some great music!!! Can't beat Dolores and you're right to highlight the other band members, Noel and Fergus, who often don't get enough credit for the whole musical backdrop to highlight Delores' vocals and without which i don't think The Cranberries have been as good as they were. Happy New Year (belatedly) and keep on bringing the great music!!!

Faye Wong did a credible Cantonese cover of this song, which was featured in the movie she co-starred in, Chungking Express. Worth checking out. She also covered Cocteau Twins, Tori Amos, and Sundays, among others.

fantastic vocals, solid bass and smart layers of guitars, but yeah, part way through this song... it's the drums that grab you and carry this song forward. And, much like the guitars, the lyrics appear straightforward, while revealing unexpected depths as you listen closer. I love that quote from the band. I guess this song gets used in a lot of shows, recently heard it in Yellowjackets, but... watch Derry Girls if you have Netflix. Great soundtrack with a ton of Cranberries, Undertones, and so forth.

That yodelling type sound at the end is called keening, traditional Irish style of singing i believe, but might be wrong

The whole quiet-loud-quiet thing was a bit of a stylistic hallmark of the 90s. There were a bewildering quantity of variations on it. This is a great song hands down no question, but what often gets overlooked with the Cranberries is the really subtle & sophisticated production especually on this album. That's the thing which really pushes this track over the top for me. The use of Dolores' completely different loud & quiet voice tonality against what the band are doing. Sometimes they match each other, and sometimes rheybdo the opposite. There Rw lots of subtle musical layers to this track, and each one ebbs and flows between foreground & background throughout the song Sometimes the sentinent of the lyrics is the star, sometimes its the sweet choral tone of her voice, sometimes it's her power, sometimes it's the nkn-lyrical "yodelling" as you put it... sometimes it's the jangling guitar counterpoint which takes over for a few bars and then Crash! a beat before you expect it, Feargal comes to the front & toughens the whole thing up with a flat four no bullshit backbeat, then it changes again....
You get the idea... there's a dynamic, shape-shifting, restless, slightly unpredictable quality to this track... a bjt like how it feels to be really in love for the first time.
It might seem like a simple throwaway 4 minute slice of pop to sing-along with in the car... and it certainly works as that... but there's depth and sophistication here too. Technical mastery in the production.
As for the "chugging" and intertwining layered musical lines, what I got was a strong whiff of How Soon Is Now. I'd be willing to bet whoever the production engineers were, they were jnfluenced by it.

The "How Soon Is Now?" thing you mentioned is completely right! I didn't even talk about the quiet and loud dynamic, but you're right on that, too. I know grunge bands especially used that.

@@InsignificantNick If I may just pop in a cheeky recommendation... I know you've listened to The Pretenders before... Chrck out I Go To Sleep from their 1981 Pretenders 2 album. It's a beautiful love song written by Ray Davies of The Kinks in 1965, while his wife was in hospital giving birth to their first daughter. It's genius is it's simplicity, beautiful melody, and very powerful lyrics. Originally Peggy Lee was meant to record it in the sixties, and there have been several versions, but the best by far (for me) is The Pretenders version from 1981.
Interesting back story, Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde was in a relationship with Ray Davies at the time it was recorded, and they also have a daughter together, Natalie Rae Hynde, born in 1983.
Keep up the great work with the reactions. I'm consistently amazed at how much you pick up from your first listen to these records. 🙏
