#fiestamovement disclosure
Ford invited me to be an Agent for the Fiesta Movement. They've provided me with a 2014 Ford Fiesta, and they're covering gas, insurance and administrative costs for the duration of the Movement. More info here: disclosur.es/vwmy9J
This guy understands what 99% of "street photographers" don't understand... what makes a great street photo is when all the little things are coming together so perfectly that the viewer almost can't believe it wasn't staged... it is only at this point that the audience's brain begins to truly engage the piece because their brain is assuming this was intentional and must be for some reason and thus begins to look for that reason. THAT is the difference in good street photography and a snapshot.
Also, to all the aspiring and self-proclaimed "street photographers" out there I would STRONGLY urge you to study abstract, especially minimalist, painters. So much of what makes up a great composition is not a goofy facial expression, the "decisive moment" of a bicycle passing a blowing piece of garbage, but instead it's usually the abstract compositional elements that activate the image.
no name eat crow u fake philosopher
@@nicholevercetti poor nicky such low self esteem, hating is all she has,so sad
Every time I watch your videos or anything related to Street Photography, I get In the mood to go shoot Street Photography. And it sucks because I usually watch them at night. XD So I can't go out.
ha ha
Thanks for the feedback - will try to interview like that next time!
This falling tomato at 17:30 is so stunning.
a humble and passionate man
If you are familiar with Eric Kim and his efforts to bring Street Phtotography education to everyone, you would understand that he indeed, gets it. If you are annoyed by the Uh huhs, you aren't paying attention to the content and that's too bad. I think Eric is so into photography and the artists that he is kind enough to expose us to, that he says "uh huh" as a kind of validation and understanding of the points the photographer is making. I for one appreciate Eric and his work and the selfless way he goes out of his way to help educate the rest of us.
J Whelan Exactly, I did not even notice the uh huhs at all until it was brought up in the comments.
Most photographers I come across on the Net are up their own arses - talking about what gear they've got or recommend etc. This bloke is down to earth and very likeable (he also uses the same camera as me). ;)
When I talk to someone and they just keep saying uh huh, it feels like they're not listening and just waiting to speak. It's very annoying
Thanks for this video interview with Jack. I have been a fan of his for a while
Great video with a talented, authentic and very likeable photographer!
Very very enjoyable interview. Nice guest.
I really like this interview with Jack. Thanks Eric.
I always enjoy your photography and commentary, keep it out.
Love the X100. Cant wait to get my hands on the x100s. Still saving lol poor as hell. My heavy canon 50d is too heavy and noticible
Flat lighting IS beautiful light, bump up the contrast, use a high ISO, pictures of people are great in flat light on overcast days.
Next to Korea, San Francisco is my favorite place to shoot street photography, never met Jack but saw him a few times.
What a great unassuming photographer, I love his work and attitude
Seems like such a nice guy. Humble, playful and open to being flawed... A trait that keeps one in a mindset of learning and interested in the world.
Good stuff!
Thank You for sharing this conversation.
humble and curious.. love it
Enjoyed watching this Eric and like Jacks photography!
Thanks man great video on the art of street photography.
"Quick look, take the shot".....and hope for the best! Great advice.
Great video, thanks Eric!
17:28 is a missed opportunity for a falling tomato shot. How the hell did he not catch that? Not so professional if you ask me. lol JK, awesome interview! Love these types of interviews with photographers! Great share!
thanks for the video, would be cool to see the pictures he took right at that moment
This guy seems lovely. Great insight! Thanks.
Mhm, yeah, mhm, uh huh, yeah, mhm
What a nice guy! The video reminds me to be always in good mood and to keep easy and simple. It's funny how your pictures show a lot who you are. Cool, thanks for the video!
Thanks...btw I get really inspired by your videos :)
Eric, for the fucking love of god, stop saying "Uh-huh, yeah, uh-huh." after every single statement from the person you're interviewing.
Please man, it's so damn annoying.
I do enjoy your videos though, you do some great work.
Hey Porco, sorry about that-- that is a bad habit of mine. Will try my best not to do that next time!
it's an interesting point Porco makes. I don't really mind the Uh-huh's and considering that in some asian countries it is a form of courtesy or politeness to say "uh huh, yeah, uh-huh" in a way of making the dialogue partner know that one is taking notice of what is being said, I find it kind of an ignorant request by Porco.
Ben Gomes Photography Also, you have to know that this nick "porco-..." is a bad way to curse god in Italian, so it could be offensive for someone
Pote de Cristo.
Porco-Dio FIlm LOL Ti adoro ahahah
I like the touch of having a tomato roll off of the stand at 17:29. :-)
This is probably the first time in about a year and a half that I am actually reminded of the word 'battery'. Ahhh... the days of digital, all trapped in the past now....
This man is so likeable and modest in his demeanour.
Dude 5:40.... check your main settings. HIGHLY recommend. I just took like 50 shots outside on an insanely cold and windy day where I didnt have time to adjust much while trying to shoot before my camera started having issues from the cold. I'd jump out of the car, frame, focus, snap, get back in the car. Get home and realize the damn thing was on ISO 1600 the entire time and everything looks like shit.
lol
Such a cool guy!
Thanks Eric for brining us Jacks work - impressive. For me it brings home that different styles work for different people - I'll ask for permission when focussing on individuals or work with a subject, some are audacious aiming for spontaneity or do both - the important thing is we remain true to our vision. The selectiveness that Jack shows in filtering the 'keepers' also enhances that vision.
Thank you for the video, Eric. Since you got a glimpse on how Jack uses the camera settings on the x100s, would you be so kind to explain what's his autofocus setting? Does he use the center point and then recomposes?
It feels like I'm watching more subdued Larry David explain his hobby.
Great video, quiet informative, just goes to show that every town/city/country deals with street photography in different ways, Im from London and every other weekend Im shooting candids and its most certainly on a 'shoot and go' basis, to hang around a scene for a few minutes, waiting for the right shot just wont work, people will soon get annoyed with me!
Nice work
Hey Eric, not sure if this is an actual thing, but do you think that by carrying a smaller mirrorless camera especially ones modeled after vintage bodies like Jack's Fuji X100 or an Olympus OM-D series, that people on the streets are less suspicious or wary of you as a photographer over using a much larger more "intimidating" looking DSLR? The main reason I ask is because I'm planning to invest into a camera and right now I primarily do nature photography, but may want to get into street photography as well and I'm looking into getting either an older midrange DSLR like a Nikon D7000 or a newer mirrorless such as an Olympus OM-D E10 Mark ii.
This guy the way he looks and acts can get away with a murder. And he does just the same thing that others do and get harassed for street photography.
What kind of lens hood is he using on his fujifilm x100s? Great video
you had me at uh-huh...
Incredible photographer. Besides that I was blown away by how little people gave a shit about having their photograph taken. Down here in the south, it's incredibly hard to do street photography because everyone is so self aware of cameras. They don't understand what I'm trying to do. All they see is a pervert.
That was my impression as well.
People in certain areas are fine, others go bananas thinking I'm taking their photograph for something dimining. When I went to North Africa, the males and children wanted their photo taken. While the Females thought different on the subject.
It's only a cultural and language barrier thing, I can assure you that if it was me in the Mission they'll be giving me a hard time as well. We can also see this happening in DigitalRev when this kid walking around the streets of Hong Kong speaking english out loud.
More videos erickk pleasee
His voice reminds me Beavis and Butt-Head school teacher.
Yes sir!
great photographer, really enjoyed this interview and his work.
the x100/s can shoot 28mm with the WCL-X100 conversion lens, how come he doesn't get one?
Random question but do you need to get a camera serviced, I have the x100 and want to keep it for a long time?
What's the extra mount on the lens?
Great video.
Best regards
Bo
For my street photography, it's "move slowly, but don't hang around".
He reminds me of Mr.Rogers. 😊 It's a compliment. ❤
I counted 514 Uh-huhs
over 9000
Uh-huhs are part of encouraging the other person to keep talking but editing a video properly includes correcting the audio so your frigging uh-huhs (not to mention your moronic questions) aren't WAY LOUDER THAN YOUR SUBJECT! But you'll be fine, eric. Your desire to teach will always outweigh your inability to learn.
Richard Zilver Wow! You lead an exciting life...
Hank Roest, no, it means you’re literally a piss poor interviewer.
If he doesn't secure that camera I'm afraid he's going to drop it.
Everybody became a photographer!
i wanted to see the pics -_-
I know what you mean. It's frustrating too that we see so little of Eric's photography. Eric Kim Where can we see your work?
I watched this thinking this guy doesn't know anything, then I saw his portfolio.
Can anyone tell me what strap he used?
Way to let Jack know the bus was coming.. :-)
He reminds me of Mr Rodgers
what a charming man.
min 14:23 was the real pic, the man with the sunglasses spiting out of his mouth a bubble gum, and the man with the square shirt standing behind them
I do a lot of street photography and you have to have thick skin. I've been told to f#ck off many times. it's all part of the game :)
Can someone please tell me what that woman was doing?
Totally reminds me of Fred Rogers. Seems like a nice guy
He missed the bikes on top of the full shopping cart at 7:00... a good street still...
Crazy that people don't care you are taking pictures of them... Here in Czech Republic people is getting so pissed that you need to run away after just one shot.
where is this mission
What camera does he (Jack Simon) use??
H恵美子 Fuji x100s
The constant uh huh's are SO annoying. Let the guy talk for goodness sake
This dude seems cool
I find it quicker and better not to use a VF, I used to use one and still have it on the camera (optical) because people think you need to look through it to take a shot, so when you I'm looking at the back of the camera they think I am reviewing some pictures but I am actually taking a shot of them.
Jack has become one of my favourite street photographers.... sorry, but I can't say "street-togs" with a straight face.
I'm jack Simon too
Huh. Didn’t know Nick Valentine had an eye for photography.
What camera is he using here?
fujifilm x100t
x100s
What audience are street photographs aimed at, who are they for ?
Can you sell your street photos?
Juan Ortega My street photography is for me but, to be honest I wouldn't buy many of my own.
" I use aperture priority... so it will choose the aperture for me" oh really.
Did anyone see the tomato drop at 17:29 LOL
i saw that i saw that!!! and i say oh oh oh!! omg
Uh-huh makes it sound like you don't care what the person is saying.. In my opinion
9:15 batteries run out? Damn! that would have been a potentially good shot.
13:43 Stan Lee walking arround the neighborhood.
The Tomato at 17:28 in the background :D
rufflesocks wow..observation level amazing
Uh Eric.........What the fuck is a "TOG"??
I heard the word on the street the 100 doesn't have good battery
Uh huh huh uh huh, yeah, uh huh, uh huh uhuh, yes, yup. uh huh yeah
Uh huh yeah.
Aha, aha, mmhmm, aha, aha
Jack Simon like Mission St. because of that gay Bath house Eros
AHA AHA AHA
Decent video, but we need to see the photos, otherwise its pointless...
17:29
uh ah, uh ah. eric kim doesn't speak.
uh uh uh uh ha ha ha ha uhmmm
lasted four minutes before before uh-huhs got to me
Aperture priority? Really
At 12:41 turn and shoot bro
Eric, I like a lot of your videos but your interviews with most of your photographers comes off a little awkward. I think it might work better if you left it to your guests to do the talking instead of giving them questions to answer. Jack seems like a fairly talkative guy. I think you could have got away with simply walking around and just recording what he says in conversation as you take photos of things. Your questions just seemed a little unnatural.
