    Eight thumbs down? Why? Who? The man has been doing this for 30 years and he has mastered the art of rapport, something that is very important in street photography but damn near impossible for many people to achieve.
    Nice job, Chris! Keep doing what you're doing.

    I lived in Peterborough in the 1980s, I still have family there. Nice to see someone captured images from then, and still doing it now.

    I have seen many old friends in C P’s photos. I always expect to find myself in one of them. Cheers Chris.

    Gotta be one of the very best documentaries I've seen on UA-cam. I learned a lot from Chris's approach to his subjects. He is a true artist and a real human.

    Great video! He had a lot of helpful tips I hadn't heard in the many other street videos I've watched. Well done!

    Great doc. Superb introduction and a masterclass on the art of approaching people in order to capture an honest moment sympathetically and without intrusion. It is the philosopher's stone of portrait photography. Technique and artistry count for nothing without the talent for gaining instamatic confidence from the subject .

    How is Chris ,getting those photos in the shopping precinct ? I have been quickly stopped and moved on by security guards when attempting a shot ,they make it quite clear their area is private NOT public land and as such we are NOT legally at liberty to photograph ! Graham

    Thanks Bill. That means a lot. It was my first attempt at a documentary and 18 months on there's a lot I'd do different. But I am proud of it and comments like yours are really special. I hope you enjoy the book, too.

    Hi Graham. On the day we filmed, Chris and I both had to report to the management office and sign-in. There was a security person with us, who kindly stayed behind me and my camera. On other occasions when I've filmed in the centre I have had to fill in a risk assessment form and show my public liability insurance documents. Chris has a bit more freedom than me. He doesn't use a tripod and he has worked for the centre, providing them with images for exhibitions and he has bought space to sell his books (www.chrisporsz.com/the-book.html). But you are correct, Graham. The shopping centre is private property and permission to photograph needs to be obtained.

      I like that you address the permit aspect, I find it a tricky and confusing part of photography.

    This is a great short documentary. I like to hear him talk about his approach to this work and then show the results after each shot. One minor point: the added shutter sound with the 1980s motor drive is quite annoying. It's clear that sound does not come from his camera.

    • @MartynMoore
      @MartynMoore  10 років тому

      Hi Keefe. Sorry you find the sound effect annoying. I added it as a kind of audio effect to mark the appearance of the still image. Maybe my mistake was timing it with the moment Chris presses the shutter. It does feel fake, but at the time I felt it needed something. If I ever get the time to re-cut the film (unlikely) I will add a Canon EOS shutter sound. I bet it doesn't sound as good but it will be better than annoying viewers.

      Martyn Moore. Martyn: My apologies if I came across as overcritical. I really don't want to discourage people from pursuing their art, be it still photography or video documentaries. On the whole, I think it's a great short documentary. I enjoy hearing about how photographers approach their work and looking at their work. The added sound is a relatively minor point. Best, KB.

      Graham Ellis Hi Graham. Chris has got permission from the management of the shopping centre. Over the years he has shared photos with them and held exhibitions there. I still have to go through heaps of red tape to film there but if you ask permission and fill-in the risk assessment form they do allow professionals to work there.

    He should go back to shooting film, his photos were a lot better.

    • @MartynMoore
      @MartynMoore  10 років тому +1

      That's an interesting comment, Frillar. Don't judge Chris's work on just the photos shot in the film, though. They are included for the purposes of the film's story only and not for any other reason. They're not his best work. But if you look at chrisporsz.com and still feel the same, there's an interesting discussion to be had. You might be right.

    • @Frillar

      Ye fair point, the stuff on his website is a better example of his current work. His colour photos just don't capture my eye like his b&w ones do, but that's just me. It may be something to do with his post work. The colour photos seem very utilitarian.

    I noticed he moves quickly, kind of in and out, may chat but doesn't stay long. I wonder if he uses auto focus, probably not. Maybe a small aperture, which makes for a longer depth of field to get the buildings and context sharp.

      @savemarinwood6678 7 років тому

      I notice you are thanking people in the video. Do you usually offer to send them pictures via email or your website? It doesn't look like you get model release but maybe you are not interested in commercial use of the images. I enjoyed your video and photos. Thanks.

    • @MartynMoore
      @MartynMoore  7 років тому +2

      Oh, I see. Yes, I think Chris sends images to lots of the subjects in his photos. He has used some images commercially but he doesn't get model releases signed. To be honest Chris and the word 'commercial' rarely appear in the same sentence and I believe he misses quite a lot of opportunities as a result. I'm really glad you enjoyed the film. You can see information about Chris's latest book at: chrisporsz.com

    Did his camera really make that sound?

    • @MartynMoore
      @MartynMoore  8 років тому

      +yared94 No. It's an audio device timed to coincide with the appearance of the image he created. Modern cameras don't sound as good as film cameras so I used a recording. There wasn't any background music playing in the street or the shopping centre, either.

    its funny how everyone evoques the getting closer but in absolutely no video we see them getting that close. Now get to the truth, if everything is in focus obviously you can just raise your arm anyone in there will be in focus. Now try to isolate a subject and tell us you got close, then we ll believe you.

    • @NorthlightmediaCoUkPE3
      @NorthlightmediaCoUkPE3 6 років тому

      Not really sure what you mean.

    • @VictoriaFilmsgroup
      @VictoriaFilmsgroup 6 років тому

      NorthLight Media Ltd very simple they re full of shit. It is very easy to stand in a street and click the button. Thats why they advise the 28 or 50 mm lens. So that they have a bigger field in focus. You focus on infinity then anyone who passes close to the camera will be in focus and they will tell you they got closer. Now tell them to get closer and create pictures with a shallow depth of field. We ll see how they go about it and if they still can get close. Oh and a precise framing. Not just a part of an arm here, a head there etc...

    • @NorthlightmediaCoUkPE3
      @NorthlightmediaCoUkPE3 6 років тому

      Nah, you're missing the point. While you're obsessing about accurate focus and shallow depth of field and 'bokeh', street photographers are concentrating on timing and juxtaposition. He gets close, too, and wide open the background is soft. Like this: www.northlightmedia.co.uk/porsz-close-up.html
