- Norwich City have signed 35 year old Danish manager Johannes Hoff Thorup as their new manager. Here's my take on the appointement and whether he's the right man to take Norwich back up to the Premier League!

A very fair assessment, Ben. I think we can all get excited as Norwich fans, not necessarily because we know it's going to be an instant hit, but because we have a project to get behind again. It's been since Daniel Farke and Stuart Webber's early days that we genuinely believed in a vision and I think under Knapper and Hoff Thorup we have that again. Who knows how it's going to go, but we can dare to dream again.
I'm from Denmark and have watched all of FC Nordsjællands matches under Johannes Hoff Thorup (the H in Thorup is silent by the way).
As a manager, he seems very determined and his players describe him as a perfectionist. His tactical style seems very clear to the players. It's possession based where the goalkeeper always passes to the defenders to build up the play. His team has been known for creating a lot of chances, and playing a quick tempo. Occasionally his team has been destroying other teams with results like 6-0 and 7-0 - even in the Conference League this season. This happens when the opponent team thinks they can "just play their own game" and don't try to counter Thorups effective tactics. Thorup's strength seems to be getting the maximum potential out of his players.
It's tough to guess how well he will do in Norwich, because FC Nordsjælland is structured as a talent factory, and even their pitch is artificial, meaning it has helped them play a quicker tempo - which has benefitted all the quick young players they have. I think he will be a success in Norwich if the players commit 100% to his style and tactics, but it might take a while before the sucess comes, because I don't think his tactics can be learned 100% within a preseason.
His assistent Glen Riddersholm, famous doing a photoshoot after winning the Danish championship posing in a gold suit with a cigar in the mouth, is a very experienced manager. Just like Thorup, he is known for getting the maximum potential out of young players. His personality seems different to Thorup's, he's often showing much more emotion than Thorup, which I think might make the two a really good match where they can compliment each other.
It's going to be interesting to watch Norwich's games this season.
Thorup may be relatively inexperienced but he brings with him a very experienced assistant head coach in Glen Riddersholm, who has won both the Danish championship title and cup.
Anyway, Thorup wants to play flowing attacking football and is also known for bringing in academy players into the first team. I can see this being a good fit.
League One written all over it ... discount - wannabe something we are not - appointment ...
Wonder where Norwich got the idea of a young bright manager to take them up into the Premier League? OK That one out of the way it ISa good appointment Because like Ipswich it is a brave one The money gap between the Premier League and Championship is ridiculous and Ipswich will probably find it as hard to stay there as Norwich or Luton But silly sniping apart the two East Anglian clubs should BOTH be top half Championship clubs at least pushing obviously for better As a lifelong Tractor Boy well done to the Canaries on this one and if you can keep the young talent at Carrow Road look out (again!) Leeds from East Anglia!
It felt to me like our last 2 appointments (Smith and Wagner) were both short-sighted gambles at staying in the PL/promotion. If either one had paid off it would have been more than worth it, but neither manager ever felt like they would be a success, and neither had universal backing from the fans.
The appointment of Hoff feels like a tentative new chapter for the club. I don't think there's any expectations of immediate promotion within the club or supporters. Without the fear of losing parachutes we can take our time in building a capable of squad with a backbone of youth talent. This was something Webber had began working towards when he arrived, but seemed to lose sight of in the chase to become an 'established' PL side.
While the 'self-funded' model has taken a slight backseat with the arrival and slow integration of the Attanasios, the money is hardly flowing in. Ergo, it is vital we have a revolving door of talented youth prospects we can sell-on to fund mid-size transfers such as Sara that give us that bit of PL quality. Ultimately this is why Hoff has been brought in and why the fans are generally optimistic - his record in Denmark for trust in youth is outstanding. For the first time since Farke, the club is moving in a positive direction with a plan that makes sense to the supporters.
Benjamin, your fair assessment of Norwich, despite being a Tractor boy, does you great credit. Keep up the good work.
Interesting. from an Ipswich ten.
Same here. I hope he's given time. Farke finished mid-table in his first season.
@@geoffpoole483 we've given him a three year contract when our last few managers have been on rolling twelve months, so thats a good sign of time to rebuild & get structure & philosophy in place
As a Norwich fan I’m hopeful we’ll keep our big assets, but not optimistic.
Rowe and Sargent both had their injury issues this season so I’m hoping that puts off some of the bigger clubs for at least one more year.
Sara is so good, not sure how we could replace him.
Then Christos Tzolis won the golden boot in bundesliga 2 with 22 goals from the wing at only 22 years old.
As much as I’d love to see that kind of form at Carrow Road, the bridges might be burnt; although if we can get good money for him it might let us keep some of the other talent and not be forced to sell
I think the fact Thorup has the highest trust in youth rating in Europe is probably a big factor in why we’ve gone for him. With parachute payments gone, developing youth players is a big party of the Norwich business model. Especially with the amount of money invested in our youth setup.
Enjoy you cutting through the cliche football buzzwords bullsh*t 😂
As a Norwich fan I’m happy with this, we just need to give him time as this finally is the start of a new era at the club
John Bond also liked flamboyant and passing football, Dave Stringer, Mike Walker, etc - that is why it says 'keep it low, splendid rush . . 'on the ball city' in the song !
The only Binner im Happy to listen to Very Good Review honest and Respectful good stuff 👍💚💛
After the limp finish to the season, happy we have new ethos, invest in youth and get back to more dynamic football. Fans need to give him time now and invest in the new approach.
As a norwich fan I feel excited about this appointment but as you said I feel the success will come down to recruitment. It Ben knappers first chance to show us what his vision is and so far it feel positive, I think we have very little funding so the model has to be based on youth development and both knapper and hoff have experience in this area and hopefully that experience is going to make the difference. Right now I'm feeling positive but there's a lot of work to do this summer, hopefully I'm still feeling positive come the start of the season.
love your honest opinions and content good luck next season you will need it the step up is ridiculous hope you stay up and we go up next season as a derby in prem will be amazing
As usual from you, a very good appraisal of the club’s situation. You’re right, you can never judge from an interview but I like the fact that we’ve gone for a young, progressive coach. Webber’s last two picks were lazy, predictable appointments. This feels much like going down the Farke route, with hopefully the same outcome. He must be given time, just as Farke was.
The biggest problem facing Norwich is, and has been since Farke's first promotion, how bad our injury list gets. Add in how thin our squad depth is and we don't stand any chance if key personnel get injured.
Ever since the injectable lots of teams are getting lots of injuries…coincidence…I think not!
Like he said, not if delias holding us back its how much she's holding us back. She should just sell all her shares to mark.
Certainly agree on the quality of recruitment being a defining factor. Also think Angus Gunn could be another player on a lower PL teams radar.
The other matter for me is whether the academy has 3 or 4 players able to step up and hold a place in the first XI like Aarons, Lewis, Godfrey & Cantwell did in 18/19.
Abu Kamara should be capable and perhaps Brad Hills. After that there are players like Tomkinson, Warner & Fisher who have played league football but have question marks. After that it’s the truly untried like Aboh, Welch & Myles.
Listening to how Thorup talks about playing makes me believe that Liam Gibbs could be a massive beneficiary. Recruited whilst Farke was in charge and still more of a possession team I think he’s really suffered due to our switch to a more pragmatic style, particularly under Wagner. Dean Smith to his credit did give him minutes.
Norwich sack their manager and have a new one after a week
Meanwhile the clowns at Safc have no manager after 104 days and counting, kld and speakman out before we go back to league one 🔴⚪️
COULD BE A CASE OF LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP 😊
will still not on the way?
I just want to see a project rather than an experienced manager who we try and mould our team around. As long as we see a consistent exciting style of play and promotion of youth im happy
I'm very much looking forward to this new era and getting into an ncfc team again...since Farke was sacked there's been a growing divide between fans and the higher echelons of the club due to lack of and very poor decisions/communication from them and knee jerk reactions to any criticism. Despite some great things Webber did in the early stages, he became so divisive, arrogant and abrasive, that he ended up being such a negative, that he had to go...and even after that we had comments from Delia echoing this toxic arrogance. Wagner ultimately didn't do a bad job, but the football was all over the place and reliant on individual brilliance more than good team process....with our full 11 out we were decent but the loss of Sarge early on left us rudderless without a plan b. Up to November we were god awful but once Sarge was back we started this incredible home form...however, away from home we remained clueless (19th form all season)....so to now have a new Sporting Director who seems to have a plan, the Attanasio group now joint majority owners and a manager with a good philosophy behind him....there's lots to get behind. As we all know, recruitment is key...so here's keeping my 12 fingers crossed (that ones for u Binners!) xx
Think this is an archetypal Norwich appointment and that alone makes me excited. We will wait and see on recruitment, but it would be great to see players like Sainz, Núnez and Sara in a side that wants to dominate possession. I do think at least two of Rowe, Sargent and Sara will leave to fund building the squad elsewhere; hopefully Abu Kamara can come in and fill the void Rowe leaves. What Norwich desperately need is a couple of confident ball-playing centre-backs. This is the move Norwich should have made when sacking Dean Smith but they were too focused on promotion that season (when it was a bit unrealistic, really) to make that kind of appointment.
Seen how Ipswich do things..... fans meet the team bus with pyros, copy that ✅️ hire a young unknown manager ✅️ 😂😂
crazy how ipswich were the first team to ever hire a young manager
@@HipkissDesign imitation is a form of flattery
Big difference coming from United and coming from some random team in Denmark that nobodies ever heard of in a league probably equivelent of league 2. 👀 😊😅
@@HipkissDesignAlso, the first step in the ‘Ipswich Model’ would be to stay out of the premier league for more than 2 decades …
@@ITFC_Mark that must be why Ipswich started poaching Carrow Road staff after the american money began flooding in
Good analysis Ben. An exciting appointment for Norwich fans I'm sure.
The crowd will need to be patient. It took months after Farke’s arrival for fans to accept that possession football means sometimes you have to kick the ball sideways or backwards.
A interesting approach and appointment thankfully we didn't go for the usual suspects.
Hopefully we will play on the front foot and control games and tighten that defence up.
Anyway it will be a long slog as the Championship.
I am feeling optimistic at least (usually) with a new manager he has fresh ideas.
Good analysis Ben keep up the good work
Nice summary (as per) Ben.
An exciting appointment & one that is wedded to the philosophies of Knapper. Seen reports which rank JHT as #1 for trusting in youth. It’s as much his style of play that whets the appetite of a Norwich fan imo. Wagner arguably achieved positionally but was way short for the majority of time on the pitch ESPECIALLY away from home. Tzolis looks to be gone for circa £3m & expect at least one of the five you mentioned to depart. Then it’s over to the recruitment as you say which BK claims to have a fearsome little black book. Interesting times but a much needed reset which the Carrow Rd faithful both called for & are excited by but need to get behind with a pinch of patience.
I wouldn't want to make any predictions as to how City will do this season but hope for another top 6 finish at worst. All we can do is give the new guy and the team the support they need 🔰🔰🔰
Superb, fair and excellently thought out video as always.
Good assessment Ben. It’s all very dependent on who will remain at Norwich once the season starts and new recruitment as you say.
Interesting appointment and exciting for the fans to get back to possession based attacking football with an emphasis on youth, time will tell
A top summary as is the norm. As a Nch fan I'm excited about this appointment. I predict good things
I agree the new manager has good english
Relegation to League One incoming.
What is mark anatasio going to do about it?
Attacking, passing football with...
Pacy wingers,
BIg n little guy up top,
Creative midfielders who can get a foot in,
Centre back chemistry,
Energetic full backs,
International keeper.
Simple ingredients for a City fan.
Arguably the 21st best team in England for over 3 decades? and I'm OK with that...its certainly been entertaining, either way
Thanks for your hard work, passion and dedication Ben.
I may support my home club...
But I too, am a football fanatic.
You have gained a new viewer this season.
Have a great summer, and whatever happens next term...
PARTY HARD!!
Bravo, win or die x
Looks like Norwich need to have a big summer transfer window especially if they lose players like Sara, Rowe and Sargent. They'll be big losses as they would for any team. Norwhich do seen to have a good nack of picking up good players at a good price.
You'll be able to get young Scandinavian players on the cheap so it's a new era at Norwich
Norwich biggest problem is that the owners have no cash to back the club up so always sell the best players and don't build around the best players . Yes we have always been good at bringing young players on and selling off at big prices
I like the appointment of Johannes hoff thorup my point is to motivate because some players are weak that they are injured is not good enough they need to rebuild but the problem with injuries won’t be able to motivate that is a big loss they won’t do anything that’s lacking because of the squad is not good enough they need to do something with the fitness issue
Chris Mutton is right though. They need to get back to playing the way the fans want. Bless
No mention of Birmingham also being in the manager hunt. Out of sight, out of mind 😢
Nooooooo always in our hearts!!
@@BenjaminBloom I knew you cared really 😍
When we played Norwich at home last season, we were Thorup in the first half!
Be interesting to know which would be the best clubs in the championship you'd lend your young players to. Be great to get some thoughts on that. Like your channel by the way and your opinions. Bless you and takecare
It's very easy.
You see what aspects you want your players to improve upon and compare the styles of play.
If you want your player to improve their positioning you send them to a millwall where they play with a low block.
Etc etc
Really enjoy your content Ben, keep up the good work. 💛💚
At least we didn't get him of the dole que so we shall see how he does for us
I heard that he’s similar to Thomas Frank
Ipswich Town fc fan we have super kieran mckenna good luck with your new manager meet again one sunny day 😀 😎
You'll Be Lucky To Survive In The Premier League.
You'll Be Down Near The Bottom Throughout The Whole Season.
Benjaminnow that youve reached the lofy=ty heights of the prem, will you still be covering us lesser mortals of the championship - Great content and congrats ... QPR will be with you next season 😆
Of course, Championship stuff going nowhere!
@@BenjaminBloom Nice one - enjoy your summer
As a Norwich fan I like the look of this appointment. Knapper has gone out and identified who he wanted and paid reasonable compo to FC Nordsjælland rather than just looking at who is available. Gibson has left and we are reported to be trying to sign Jose Cordoba (Left CB) from Levski Sofia. We are also rumoured to be looking at Martin Frese (LB) from FC Nordsjælland. I think we;re in for a period of transition as Thorup builds his team but I think most Yellows will allow him the time to rebuild if they can see what the plan is and if we are playing the 'right' way.
Whooooo? Never heard of him
Probably a lot of people you haven’t heard of on this planet.
you can read his stats better than i can ,read into what you will but nothing to write home about
Cause who needs ambition
LOL 😂 Its been a long time coming but the natural order is resuming. Ipswich Town Pride of Anglia. Enjoy your new manager from Wish 😂
