"It's a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff." -George Carlin
We Americans have a stuff problem, and more than a tool, full-size trucks are mostly used as stuff/ crap haulers. They've become status and lifestyle symbols more than anything.
There's a reason why the rest of the world gets by with mid-size trucks as work and family vehicles.

Big appeal for my full size truck purchase is road trips and living in rural America. Not to mention the value of riding high in a 6000+ lb vehicle when everything else on the road is a semi, 2500/3500 with a trailer or equally sized full size pickup or SUV.
I no longer get blinded driving down state highways after dark and I have peace of mind knowing IF a wreck happened my family and I will be safe driving the biggest vehicle we can. There’s a reason majority of housewives drive suburbans and large cars. That piece of mind for safety and keeping family alive is worth more than 40 mpg could ever provide.
Then there’s specific lifestyle use cases like driving down dirt or logging roads after rain, towing a trailer, getting to a hunting lease, etc.

  • @robwalker4548
    @robwalker4548 23 години тому +2

I have both. Pickups suck at Mpg and hard to drive in tight places. I need a car for the majority of use. You make it sound like you are at Lowe’s and hardware store eveyday. I need a pickup only for special projects and then my sennia has hauled more in the past year than my pickup. If you can afford truck prices and price of gas then you are lucky but I know a lot of people driving trucks mostly as a commuter vehicle but they are wasting their money not mind so I don’t care. I also have hitches on my cars cause a lot of light stuff is easier to haul through town. Since I have had my sennia I rarely need to use my pickup so it is mostly used for bigger and dirtier projects that are not that common and probably will keep it another 10 years because of the stupid high prices they want for a new pickups.

Trucks are the answer for those households that ONLY have ONE vehicle.
Crew cabs tend to seat 5. For a family that's Dad, Mom and up to 3 kids. For me, that's me, Jen and the dog 😂
But it also has UTILITY. It can haul and tow.
Trucks are quite literally the DO IT ALL vehicle.
If I don't have a truck, then I have a decent sized SUV that can fold seats down

Well said Jason, we built our own cabin over rough roads about 35 years ago. Today use the truck to move the boat around, haul garbage to the dump etc. Have 35 miles of gravel, mud which a small SUV suspension would break down in a year.

I find small trucks much more useful than big HD trucks. Even my dad who has been a contractor for 20+ years and has been in business for a looooong time has never needed anything bigger than an F150 (and not the newer F150s). His daily work truck now is a 2003 Toyota Tundra which is even smaller than a 2nd gen Tundra. Sucks that small trucks are no longer a thing though, I'd love a brand new Toyota Pickup with a 22RE.

I plan to switch from F36 440i GC to a pickup again, probably a RAM1500. I had a F150 raptor gen 2 before the bimmer. There are things I wish to do but I can't do with a bimmer. I miss the truck bed, the ease of mind when doing long trips. The bimmer doesn't have a spare, and gives some bs issue with the turboed powertrain (B58/ZF8). Had white smoke all over the place once when idle for 30min in a traffic jam. Sporty on road for sure, but I'm over the age of wanting a sport car. Did I mention I also had a 15 wrx? So I experienced them all pretty much at this point.

There's so much psychology at play with vehicles. There's large groups of people that don't do any of the activities that you mentioned at the start. Apparently neither of us are in that group but here's what you're missing out on. Muuuuch better on-road performance, speed, acceleration, you can show up to a nice restaurant in a luxury car but you show up to the valet stand in a pickup truck, that thing ain't getting parked in the front. Basically, white collar folks and no they don't work on projects around their house, they hire someone else to do that isht. I have them in my family, I know how it works. They're getting some really nice cars loaded with features that drive incredible for less than we are spending on our trucks and they are not constrained by an oligopoly cartel of 3 or 4 brands due to trade tariffs. So there's real competition. Real choices. I'm not defending the arguments they're making against truck buyers tho. Especially if they whip out the empty bed fallacy.

I went with a Bronco sport because it fits my life but the decision would have been different if a few of my hunting buddies didn't already have trucks. It doesn't matter if a Prius would work for 95% of the driving you do if it can't do the 5% get something that can.

I own a full size truck and a full size sedan. I inherited the sedan is only reason I have it but it I use it to run around in to keep miles off my truck some. Full size trucks are the most functional vehicle . Mid size truck's mmm not as much, the back seats are so small you can't haul adults comfortably and the beds are super small, an SUV is usually a better alternative to a midsize truck since you can fold down the back seat and haul close to 8' of cargo. Must minivans can haul 8' sheets of plywood and have more compacity then a Suburban but don't have the towing capacity if you need to tow.

Jason, one can be a truck guy, and a car guy! I've owned and driven a truck since 1993, I've owned a car as well since 2002 along with my truck! My car's though have been sporty/muscle cars which I drive because they have almost as much, or more horsepower then my truck does. Currently, my Camaro SS with a 6.2 Supercharged V8, has more horsepower then my Sierra Denali with a 6.2 V8. I agree the truck is a tool, I couldn't go without one, but I love my car as well! I mean, I can drive a car, in fact I do drive a car as a work beater. Can that same car get me through a foot of snow? Can that car haul a cord of wood? Can it hall a full size V-8 car and tools to a demolition derby? The answer to all of those questions is no. A lot of car people are what I call big city hicks. That's not an attack on them, but the fact is, most of those people have never left the city. They do not understand the rural lifestyle, and they don't want to, and that's fine. But at the end of the day I don't tell them what they can own and what they can't, and I expect that same grace from people like that. That's my second ted talk on one of these videos in two days.
