You need to make sure the shirt you're dying is 100 or at least 90% cotton and don't feel you need blank white, pale grey works fine and I think shirts with prints and/or lettering look even better tie dyed. Vinegar and salt is a very effective fixative especially if you're not dying enough to use up a whole bottle of store bought fixative. Also put some thought into colours and try to avoid letting colours that will turn into brown touch, in general less colours is better. If you want the colours to run through the shirt and fill the white space, just put it in diluted fixative for only 10 minutes then machine wash by itself then straight into tumble dryer, this will fade the dark parts but fill in the shirt with colour while still maintaining your pattern.
You can add even more texture and design to the shibori design by wrapping and binding it with string, dental floss or artificial sinew (a waxy sort of stranded string that you can find in the leather arts area of your craft store, or from a leathercraft shop like Tandy, etc.). Each of these will yield a different result depending on how snugly you pull the wrap. Sinew can be pulled very tightly and it will resist the dye because of its waxy texture... it's also a good material for tying other folds to make for really good definition. Dental floss and kite string work, too, but it's harder to pull them as tight as sinew... which is okay if you are going for a softer tie and a little more color blending. I used dental floss on my arashi shirt and it worked out fine. DO NOTE... on the shibori, if you cinch it tightly enough AND if there is a fairly thick hem on your shirt, you might be able to create a stripe where the dye doesn't completely penetrate. This is called "resist", and it's a characteristic that you can use to create designs within designs. Or, it can be a screw-up if you don't account for it! My shirt picked up a resist-stripe from the hemline because I didn't think about it when I was wrapping my shirt. Nonetheless, it made a very nice, subtle light stripe across my arashi design, and it looks amazing. Just be aware that this can happen, and decide whether you want to include it or not.
Colors are super faded. It is recommended to let the dye soak for a full 24 hours to allow the dye to fully adhere. My tie dye comes out with more vibrant colors when I let it soak for at least 24 hours.
Also that’s a lot of white, if that’s the look you’re going for than great but if you want more color you need to apply the dye between the creases and crevices of it. And he didn’t apply that much......
I sell tie dye....these are definitely not the best methods 1. Whatever you’re dying should be DAMP (not wet) before tying it. This makes for using less dye, and the water will disperse the dye farther into the fabric so there’s a lot less white when you untie it. Before dying I soak the fabric in soda ash, and after dying as well. I find this works the best for the longevity of the color to stay in the clothing. 2. It needs to sit for 24 hours, 6-8 is the minimum, don’t rush it....you’re going to end up with less vibrancy in the colors & the dye won’t stay in the fabric very long before it becomes very faded. 3. Wash after dying with COLD water and minimal detergent, like with colored hair hot water washes out dye. 4. Put the squeeze bottle’s tip in between the folds of the fabric and squeeze...again, makes for a lot less white in the fabric
1.. Turn your t shirts inside out for best results (soda ash soak your shirts as well) 2.let your dye sit for minimum of 24-48 hours for more vibrant colors.. 3. Could have used a lot more dye on all of those shirts..
I tried tie dye for the first time yesterday after watching these tips, and they turned out great. Thank you! I did one spiral and one kind of a version of the crumple. I'm going to have to do this again! (next time I'll remember the gloves though - teal fingers now haha)
@@AskariBadshah I got mine at Michael's, but don't recall the name of the colors. There were several sets available there, and I think they have individual colors as well if I remember correctly.
Well, my mom was doing that 20 years ago, even 30. Now that fashion is slowly back because I see this type of t-shirts everywhere. Even I was doing this 10 years ago as a kid XD
This is the best video I’ve seen so far. Clear instructions and comprehensive step by step. The only thing missing was: should I wet them before or not and do they need to be 100% cotton?
I would love some advice in regards to mixing the powder with hot water. I bought multiple boxes of RIT dye and the directions say that for every 1 lb of fabric you will dye to use 3 gallons of liquid. I am only making 1 kids t-shirt for a school project and don’t know the water to powder dye ratio especially if I am making the liquid in old style ketchup squeeze bottles. If anyone knows that would be very helpful. Thanks!
Was the shirt still wet before dying and and if for the shibori I put the tube at the top and roll down will the pattern appear bottom to top rather than top to bottom?
this video seems to be 10 minutes long, but it’s only 4:50
Are u the sister of Shawn MeNdeS ?! 😂😅
Wdym by that?
Gloves are important, my hands are purple and black now 😂
does anyone knows if the liquid in the bottles will still dye if it gets cold ? (like if I want to save for the future)
Cole Parsley 😂😂😂😂
YO NO FUI yes
@@yonofuiprod I usually just dye with cold because I'm lazy, if you're dyeing 100% cotton it works fine might need heat if its a less receptive fabric
Mine was blue and pink and green

Carolyn Keffer I don’t think they diluted theirs right either on top of not sitting long enough

I never get dark colors with bottles . Ice dye is my preferred method but it’s hard to aim colors
@@vybinout6143 can you teach me how make the ice dye? My color it's faded too
I think about the textile composition 💯 cotton! And use the correcto ink and adhered base
Tie dye is back in fashion just recently. Which is great thanks for sharing from New Zealand
Using the dowel is a great idea it's a lot easier to do the spiral pattern I'm definitely going to have to use that

@Zsavage1 I'm sure the fish tank are for filming purposes only, you can use your sink or a 5 gallon bucket. gallon size freezer bags are very common
@Zsavage1 I guess I'm not good with sarcasm either LOL, and I still think a gallon size bag would be a good size to use
Tiedye is always in style
Do you not know sean wotherspoon smh

Can u tell me what is the colors name? And where i can but it

Great video, but why not soak the shirts in soda ash? The color would’ve came out better
We used special salt from the same brand as the dyes. Next time we’ll probably look into soda ash instead.
Highsnobiety right on 🤙🏼
Mathew O'Donnell first basically. I soak all the white shirts for at least twenty minutes. Ring out the excess water, then continue on to dyeing.
Yo is baking soda and soda ash the same thing?
Baking soda is sodium carbonate and soda ash is sodium bicarbonate. You can use baking soda but you have to bake it first
The way u grabbed ur apron.. got me 😂❤
We did tie dye at a yearly day camp called Happening Day Camp. Looked forward to it every year. A lot of fun!
You guys make the best Tutorials!
Thanks
Yoo I’ve never seen the shibori technique it’s DOPE!

tip: hold the t-shirts up at the end (or wear them) rather than hang them on rack where can't fully see 'em
I agree

Is long er you leave the dye to set is it better also do you flip inside to out side to dye

Love the creativity, how can the colors be made darker?
Leave it to sit after applying the Colors. 1day makes it bright as hell!
And that was our quick and easy guide on how to tie die
Boy u lying this takes a few couple hours
10 hours you mean?
No 6 to 8 hours otherwise it wont work
Dye sits for 24 hrs

What is the fixer? And why the final colors are so faded when they came out so beautiful when untied?
Does soda ash act as a fixative? Can it be used as an alternative option with we don’t have the fixative?

What are the dye supplies you used?
