Fully Offset-Loaded Barbell Rows

  • This is a surprisingly challenging variation of the barbell row, perfect for times when you don't have access to heavy weight (like a hotel gym, for example).
Basically, you're doing a normal barbell row but gripping on the very end of the bar with one hand then normal grip width for an overhand grip row with the other.
Because most of the bar is off to the side, the leverage of that ends up putting more loading on the one side (the side that's closer to the middle of the bar) than the end hand side.
It's a cool hack for making light weight feel much heavier.
I also find it really hits the Teres Major and Rhomboids very effectively and even the rear delts (not so much the middle traps) so it's one you can do even if you DO have access to heavy weight but maybe just want a lighter rowing movement.
Because it's offset loaded, it does bring in the core nicely as well.
Do your reps on one side then immediately move to the other end of the bar (or step over it to the other side) to work the other side of your back.
The end-holding side is really just there to provide a fulcrum for the load and doesn't do much beyond that so there will be very little carryover fatigue from one side to the other.
