I disagree. I have gone back to listen to "Sucker is a new and original song which doesn't plagiarize at all" Dozens of times. This one i didn't even finish.
This mashup has a bunch of unexpected parts. I've never expected the Chalkeaters' Crushing Thirties in it. Or the Despair Of Demon from Yakuza 0. OR EVEN THE MUSIC FROM *INSCRYPTION* !!!
*THAT INSCRYPTION PART IS EPIC.* BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. Some of the parts of this mashup (really a minority, and after listening to this song more times most of it has grown on me) was a bit iffy but that part was rock-awesome.
I truly have never cared if any song "ripped off" any other. If it sounds good, then it sounds good. If everything had to be 100% original then there would basically be no new art at all.
I agree to an extent. yes, there are tons of songs out there and it's hard to come up with something truly original. in modern music, it's insanely easy to make a song that 'sounds good' by using popular chord progressions, reusing hit song structures, using things that are already proven to 'work'. because of this, artists who experiment with music, who strive to make something unusual, distinct or unique (though it might not sound all that good) should be more appreciated.
The Piano Test is helpful. If you play the melody of a song on the piano, and it sounds exactly like a different song, that's plagiarism. Lyrics and chord progressions have more grey area, but the melody is a dead giveaway.
The trapper theme's presence was pretty pog, but I feel like it didn't *quite* have the intensity/bridled rage needed for that segment. I dunno what'd replace/augment it, though- my mind almost goes to something from Weezer?
ikr and these young artist have grown up with songs that have inspired them into creating their sounds so its no wonder they sound a bit similar but original artists are taking advantage of that
Like a minute into this song, I was struck with a sudden strong impression that every clip in the video was happening along the same, really long street, and Kiryu and Kuze were fighting in the sewer running beneath it.
I'm imagining a highschool setting where a representative of the sources are either students or work in the school. (Most of singers and May are students, Kuze is the principal, Jimmy Urine works in the cafeteria, Sonic is the janitor and Leshy is an animal biology teacher)
I gotta say, as soon as I heard “good 4 u” I’m like wow this sounds like Paramore…it’s scarily similar. However, at the end of the day, you can’t own a chord progression. There’s only so many chord combinations out there, so eventually, songs will have some similarities. I’m sure some of my own songs sound similar to others, that’s what inspiration is. But there is a fine line…to each his own I guess!
Yea they all have the same time signature but personally the only song I found that sounded super similar in the mashup was “good for you” & “misery business”. All the others have the same time signature but those two songs seem the most in common in terms of sound, style, and tempo. I guess over time studios run out of creativity & end up producing the same sounding stuff?
@@rileyywhited cause most ppl over the age of ~20 know the song “misery business” from our childhood/young adulthood since it was super popular in the 2000s-2010s and we could easily see the similarities between the two songs.

I keep rewinding the part with Shut me up mixed with the good 4 u bassline/instrumentals, the aggressiveness of the vocals contrasts so well, there's something that sounds almost melancholic about it that I really love
Considering there’s an insane plagiarism debate around this song that even Hayley Williams has commented on, I’m not gonna be surprised if you get some shit for this one
I think Q knows. I noticed Boulevard of Broken Dreams and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together both appeared in this mashup. Both of those two songs, barring style, have the same similarities musically to good 4 u that Misery Buisnes has. Adam Neely had a fantastic breakdown of it, so if y’all haven’t seen that, you should check it out.
All these radio stations and streaming services trying to get me to listen to songs one at a time. I just don't have time for that. Thank you for putting them all together so I can listen to them all at once. Saves a lot of time.
Oh boy, I hope this one doesnt get taken down due to total bullshit! For afterall, it is a totally original work of art which will be wholly unique in its execution.
In my opinion, the genius of this mashup is the fact that pretty much every song involved can be intrinsically tied together from a perspective of meaning, as well as music. Firstly, the obvious ones: Good 4 U and Misery Business. Both tackle the interruption of a relationship by a third party, but from completely opposite perspectives. The contrast between both songs is clear in their tones: Misery Business is triumphant, a confident "screw you" to the person who she felt stole his heart before she could take it for her own, where Good 4 U is full of resentment to the person in question, and his apparent apathy towards the singer. After that, we get Disaster of Passion, which encapsulates how head over heels in love our singer was with the person in question, willing to follow them to the ends of the earth. Appropriately, the song title also serves to represent the tragedy of the breakup - it's passing is the Disaster of our singer's Passion. Both Never Getting Back Together and Shut Me Up are utilized for further accentuation of our singer's bitterness and resentment towards her ex-lover, much more aggressive and blunt in delivery, practically taunting him with how much she "really doesn't care, try and stop me after that break up." Enter the immediate contrast of Boulevard of Broken Dreams, which proves that the aforementioned was all indeed a front. Our singer clearly feels she walks alone, isolated, the most important person to her having left her for some other person. I like to interpret the incorporation of Immigrant Song's iconic scream as a literal internal scream that cannot be vocalized because doing so would compromise the aggressive front... Which inevitably unveils itself anyways. Crushing Thirties is, once more, a reflection on the happier, jubilant past life of love our singer shared with this guy, which will unfortunately never be re-attained. It's not "30 Years Ago" unobtainable, but love can certainly feel that way. I would even argue the brief Planet Wisp motif also encapsulates the feeling that what was once your home and place of comfort has now been corrupted, and requires a lot of time to truly mend. We then get more of the original piece with the Trapper's theme from Inscryption. This is especially cool to listen to, and conveys several messages at once - maybe it means our singer feels like prey being hunted and skinned by heartbreak? Maybe she's the hunter, waiting for her revenge on the girl that stole her love? Or maybe, on a meta level, she is like the opponent in Inscryption, isolated from the rest of the world to the point where only random chance can save her from the depression and boredom of life (the interpretation I lean to most because of the line "maybe I was too emotional...")? Many messages can be taken from this, and I consider it super cool. And yes, *even the sussy carries meaning to it.* With the relationship dead and gone, the memories formed from it feel fake, unreal, a ghost of the past. One could even say that the ex's feelings towards the singer were, at least for a time, entirely fabricated... The front of an Impostor, if you will. Admittedly, I've not played the Yakuza games, and as such I have... Zero clue what the incorporation of this backing track is. Since I don't wish to be spoiled on these games, I'll leave that interpretation up to you, the reader and listener, as well as anyone who knows Yakuza lore and can relate the struggles detailed here to Kiryu's saga. All this to say, this mashup absolutely slaps, and compelled me to read deep and find a narrative out of what was probably just a bunch of meme picks that sounded good when combined as they were. Props to you, Triple-Q.
I'd love to post my perspective on the Yakuza side, but to respect your wishes on spoilers (cuz the franchise is GARGANTUAN worth going in blind) I'll just say that it's only somewhat relevant to this narrative, but at the same time fits it like a glove. It mostly has to do with his internal emotions after several chapters. In relation to a love life though, that's a different character, and/or a different title in the series.
Chiming in that the Trapper track could also be read as a tie-in regarding feelings of betrayal. The Trapper is a friendly NPC for the majority of part one and the first time I encountered him as a boss I felt like someone pulled a rug on me! He was the guy I traded with! I wouldn't have made it this far without him! How could he!!
2:45 Okay I don't know the technical terminology, but the build up of tension then the full stop of the music right before the whole song all explodes in your ears at once near the end is just HEAVENLY. I'm just gonna call it the sussy beat drop, it's honestly my favourite reasons why I love rock songs so much. It's done ALOT but idk it's always so satisfying when a song can make you so physically excited from just a few melodies in your ear hole.
Idk if there is an actual term for it (or if you wanted a real answer), but I'm pretty sure this is just a sound illusion. So prior to 2:45 the music was a bit louder, then at 2:45 the music got quieter (or the instrumental cut out at least giving the illusion that it's quieter), and then it goes back to the same volume as prior to 2:45. The tempo might have also slowed down at 2:45 as well. It's a build up of energy. It's used in a lot of pop songs as when you build energy of the song (typically with volume and tempo) you can't just keep doing that or your song becomes a mess. So if you cut back at a certain point and then release it, it feels like it was reenergized. At least I'm pretty sure that's what this was. A good example of this is in Ninja Sex Party in their song Danny Don't You Know (around 4:00).
@@kelsanna143 Dang that's a pretty cool trick. I didn't expect someone to have an answer, but thanks so much for telling me! I'm not that knowledgeable on music tricks so it's always cool to find out these things.
Listening to good 4 u I could never quite put my finger on why it felt so familiar. Now hearing it side by side, the way Olivia delivers "sussy" truly is inarguable plagiarism. Thank you for your work Triple-Q!
This is like a really weird, but also really hype act one finale to a musical. We've got the anti-heroine singing about her success at getting the boy of her dreams while his jilted psycho ex is making thinly-veiled threats to burn his house down. We've got two thirty year old best friends stuck in a dead end retail job, and one is clearly about to snap. We've got two guys about to battle to the death in the sewers. We've got the guy singing about his loneliness and isolation as he's stuck in the shadow realm forced to play card games with a bearded demon. And we've got this cute weeb girl who's just vibing, oblivious to the drama going on around her.
I appreciate the sync of the Kiryu and Kuze fight during the Shut Me Up segment. I'm a sucker for any kind of music synced up to video game characters slamming into each other.

Pop rock is a very formulaic genre, almost always in 4/4. Find pop rock or similar songs in the same key and you can see where they share sounds and ideas.
Even tho they say it's "plagiarized" I honestly think Olivia Rodrigo is simply inspired by the old 2000s rock music and I think of it as good news because that means kids these actually like these kind of music and seeing how popular good 4 u is, it's a great sign that rock music can make a comeback and be mainstream again
When I have the song "good 4 u" stuck in my head, it always transforms into either "Misery Business" from Paramore or "Someday" from the TWEWY OST. Theses songs are so similar.
I don't feel like this is even remotely plagiarism (you've basically just identified how genre works, this is all pop-punk, that the similarity) but also this song is a bop EDIT: jesus christ every single day I get the same reply on this. If !THAT'S THE POINT! or !IT'S A JOKE! then it's a stupid clickbait title and the channel needs to chill.
I feel like Q isn't trying to say "X is plagiarism" but "The very act of arguing if a song is plagiarizing is redundant because no song is 'entirely original'" they did the same with Sucker and garage rock
There's nothing punk about Good for you it's just pop there's nothing really punk about it you can tell it was sorta inspired but the execution wasn't that great
@@fantrash5698 I feel like if it was just pop it would not mesh so well with all the other songs and the instrumentals are very similar to what is normally used in punk rock and then pop punk like that guitar before the chorus and then the chorus is definitely a punk pop chorus it actually reminds me of that one song over on the butterflies I think it's called
no matter how you feel about the plagiarism thing, this shows why this song was so successful: it literally sounds like many many other successful songs at the same time and it's incredibly recognizable
@@RevolutionaryLoserIt would only be a terrible reason if the song was bad. The fact that it clearly takes inspiration from a lot of different things and still sounds like a great pop song is a feat in itself.

Yeah this is pretty convincing but it's scary that music has a limit of audible notes and still sound good, which means there's gonna be more and more royalty lawsuits from old big music companies eventually you cant make a hit without 50 companies telling you you used their song
I'd say this is true, but it's more specific to pop music or this genre of songs If you listen to some more foreign music's that use unconventional beats and instruments you'll see that the actual range is massive It's just that these cord progressions are popular in western music so of course you'll have a lot of examples (and lawsuits)
I read somewhere recently that the creator of Euphoria said something like, It’s one thing to copy someone’s art, it’s another to copy it but make it your own and put it in a new context. I wish I had an exact quote but still, when I heard Good 4 U it was clearly inspired by other songs. But it’s still new and with her own story.

I've always disliked good 4 u but couldn't put my finger on why. Nobody rips off Paramore and gets away with it. Btw I love how you include vocals from the original song to really show how similar it is to other ones, as with Sucker. This is fantastic.
@@Vher_ Yeah, its more like a tongue-in-cheek ribbing. Yeah. It's just sampling.
@@nittygritty7034 it's not sampling.

@@skyguy713 SOCIETY, YOUR SOCIETY
Both Never Getting Back Together and Shut Me Up are utilized for further accentuation of our singer's bitterness and resentment towards her ex-lover, much more aggressive and blunt in delivery, practically taunting him with how much she "really doesn't care, try and stop me after that break up."
Enter the immediate contrast of Boulevard of Broken Dreams, which proves that the aforementioned was all indeed a front.
Nice essay
probably the highest effort comment here
Chiming in that the Trapper track could also be read as a tie-in regarding feelings of betrayal. The Trapper is a friendly NPC for the majority of part one and the first time I encountered him as a boss I felt like someone pulled a rug on me! He was the guy I traded with! I wouldn't have made it this far without him! How could he!!
damn bro calm down leave some brain for the rest of us
2:45 Okay I don't know the technical terminology, but the build up of tension then the full stop of the music right before the whole song all explodes in your ears at once near the end is just HEAVENLY. I'm just gonna call it the sussy beat drop, it's honestly my favourite reasons why I love rock songs so much. It's done ALOT but idk it's always so satisfying when a song can make you so physically excited from just a few melodies in your ear hole.
"Sussy beat drop" is incredible

The music video for 1:13 was directed by Jhonen Vasquez, who also was the creator of Invader Zim.
Sucker is new and original: wow it’s really cool that sucker fits so nicely with so many songs
Good 4 U is new and original: how dare she plagiarise so much
I've always disliked good 4 u but couldn't put my finger on why. Nobody rips off Paramore and gets away with it.
Btw I love how you include vocals from the original song to really show how similar it is to other ones, as with Sucker. This is fantastic.
Hayley Williams co-wrote the song maybe that's why, along with other band members of Paramore helped with the instrumentals
A lot of 2000s pop punk sounds the same regardless, so it’s pretty whatever
you're taking this the wrong way if you think that this is a diss on any of the songs in the mashup
@@Vher_ Yeah, its more like a tongue-in-cheek ribbing. I know as well as anyone else that these days music is always just endless borrowing, reinvention and inspiration, and what can be construed as a "ripoff" might just be similar chord progressions. Pointing out similarities and making hyperbole out of it is just part of the fun.
@@pootismann4942 technically that was added after the fact when it was pointed out that good 4 u is an interpolation
Knowing only one song from this entire mashup, I can say with absolute certainty that the songs blend so well together that I genuinely do not trust the MV transitions.
Seeing all these comments thinking this is a serious criticism of the music industry, they would likely get their minds blown by the "4 chords" song.
Need to find a partner that is as loyal to me as Triple Q is to Planet Wisp Act 1
It's funny (and kinda sad) how this people in comments try lo lecture Triple Q about how music "works" when theirs series of "New and orignal songs mashups" is literally about *"Yeah, any music is original, go on"* bruh, the people that didn't get the idea at all and go straight to "defend that poor singers" pretty flamed tho XD
this is almost two years old and i still come back to it, this is too good ❤🎉
With the songs layered like this it really feels like good 4 u is the storyline of Misery Business told from the OTHER girls perspective and this is just these two ladies duking it out
Never thought I’d see Yakuza music in typical pop rock, but lemme tell ya that was a pleasant surprise. This mashup slaps.
Lyrics:
I'm in the business of misery, let's take it from the top
She's got a body like an hourglass, it's ticking like a clock
It's a matter of time before we all run out
When I thought he was mine, she caught him by the mouth
I waited eight long months, she finally set him free
I told him I couldn't lie, he was the only one for me
Two weeks and we caught on fire
She's got it out for me, but I wear the biggest smile
Whoa, I never meant to brag
But I got him where I want him now
Whoa, good for you,
You're doin' great out there without me, baby
God, I wish that I could do that
I can’t wait to catch up
Before the sun sleeps
We are never, ever, ever, ever (I’m the disaster of passion) ('Cause God, it just feels so)
Getting back together
It just feels so good
The bass, the rock, the mic, the treble
I like my coffee black just like my metal (Ahh! Ahh!)
With the bass, the rock, the mic, the treble
I like my coffee black just like my metal (Ahh! Ahh!)
Cause I can't wait for you to lock me up
In a minute, minute, in a fuckin' minute
I can't wait for you to lock me up
In a minute, minute, in a second
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me (Non-stop love song)
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating (Crushing in your thirties, crushing in your thirties)
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me (But I got him where I want him now)
'Til then I walk alone (I’m the disaster of passion)
Crushing in your thirties, crushing in your thirties (Ahh! Ahh!)
Ahh! Ahh!
Ahh! Ahh! (Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)
Ahh! Ahh! (Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)
Maybe I'm too emotional (Mmm-mm-mmm-mm-mm-mmm)
But your apathy's like a wounded soul
Maybe I'm too emotional
Or maybe you never cared at all
Maybe I'm too emotional (Mmm-mm-mmm-mm-mm-mmm)
Your apathy is like a wounded soul
Maybe I'm too emotional
Or maybe you never cared at all
Whoa, I never meant to brag
But I got him where I want him now
Whoa, good for you,
You're doin' great out there without me, baby
Like a damn SUSSY-opath
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me (Crushing in your thirties, crushing in your thirties)
We are never, ever, ever, ever (I’m the disaster of passion) (Good for you)
Getting back together
It just feels so good
Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily
@@takiyeet6946 holy fuck im already confused when reading the original comment
You're doing god's work, son
damn, can't believe you were faster than me this time- *closes 3 documents and deletes my own lyric comment sneakily*
THANKS
The dedication
2024, and I'm still just so impressed with how Olivia can sing with 11 different vocal styles, tones, and textures in 1 song.
