EARLY ACCESS/WATCHALONGS TO THE REST OF HEARTSTOPPER SEASON 2!!: www.patreon.com/ReelTimeYT/posts?filters%5Btag%5D=Heartstopper
A couple of times in the first season, Charlie turns down food, but it's super subtle and not something you would be likely to notice if you weren't looking for it. They set up a lot of his mental health struggles slowly which I think works really well because he's pretty practiced at hiding them, which feels very true to life for me.
Even more than when he declines food, there's notable instances when he moves food around in his bowl/on his plate/similar, but never actually eats even as others are in the scene. (Only when he feels especially happy or better about himself do we see him eat onscreen, with the one exception being the milkshake date before the school concert; but otherwise, there's many instances where it's notable but, as you note, done so in a lowkey manner.)
They did such a good job of slowly hinting at Charlie's issues with food in an authentic way. I think the fact that so many reactors don't pick up on it is good because Charlie never wants to make it obvious.
This! There are a lot of things that I missed in s1 but I noticed after reading the comic. The main one is in episode 7, when Charlie was in the art room by himself, he put hit lunch box away without eating anything
As someone who had an ED in HS, the first time Charlie looked for a long time at his bowl of cereal in season 1, I thought he might have an ED, but if you don't have personal experience most people won't notice for a while, which is true to real life! I really liked how they portrayed the issue so far.
I was about to say ALL of this! ❤
Your Harry impression gets me every time. "OI! CHARLIE SPRING!"
I love how harry *need* to say Charlie's full name
They never brought up the eating disorder, but they did sprinkle it in the 1st season. He barely touched his cereal, and whenever he was offered food Charlie would often rejected it. Like when Tori told him he never ruined her life and offered to make Charlie pizza and he said he wasn't hungry.
Yeah and when Nick wanted to buy them popcorn at the cinema on the Bully episode. He wasn’t hungry then either 🙁
In the first season we have some clues about Charlie's problem. Those who read the comics can recognize it more easily, but when they go to Paris (in the series and in the comics) Nick sees clearly how Charlie struggles when it comes to food.
And the scene at the Louvre is exactly like the comics.
There's been little hints here and there of Charlie's eating habits, like in the first season we see him spinning his spoon around in his cereal but not actually eating it. Later at the movie theater Nick asks what kind of popcorn he wants and Charlie says he's not hungry. When he's eating alone in the art room we see him open his lunch box and then close it without eating. And in the final episode when he tells Tori he feels like he ruins people's lives, she asks if he wants her to make a pizza and he says he's not hungry again. Then in season 2, in the first few episodes they hinted at it when he again is holding a bowl of cereal and not eating it, when he goes to the store to buy Nick the chocolate bar we see him hesitating to pick it up, when he goes over to Nick's house and meets his brother Charlie lies and says he will just eat when he gets home but when he gets home he tells his parents he ate at Nick's, in the fourth episode Nick gets him an ice cream cone and Charlie says he is still full from breakfast and Nick says he didn't eat much breakfast but Charlie insists he did, when they go out to eat where Imogen breaks up with Ben we see Charlie staring at his food uncomfortably and just poking at it with his fork, and then at breakfast at the start of episode 5 he says during breakfast that he's not hungry. So they've given a lot of hints but they are subtle enough that if you don't know the storyline it can be missed. :) they will become more noticeable now in the future episodes.
with Charlie’s ed, it was as relevant in season 1 as it was in the first two graphic novels, it is quite subtle in both season 1 and book 1 and 2 but you do notice these little lingering moments when you get know about his diagnosis later one, book three and four are where it really amps it up with showing his struggles so hopefully in season 3 we’ll see how it gets translated onto screen!
Yep because this season didn't have a lot of book 4
@@ezequielmondada6427 yeah it was deffo the majority of book 3, except scenes like the dinner scene etc i think this was mostly because there is such heavy topics in book 4 so it really does need its own season to fully explore those concepts properly
@@avamac0000 I 100% agree
my mouth DROPPED when Harry actually stuck up for Nick and Charlie😭
I LOVE this episode because as someone who has read the comics, I was waiting so impatiently for the kiss at the Louvre and they did *not* disappoint! 💓💜💙

“ You don’t always need to understand it to enjoy it.” “You don’t have to understand your feelings completely to know you like something. You don’t have to always figured everything out. You can just feel.” - Favorite lines/quotes
THIS!!
im surprised not one of them thought to ask one of the girl's for some concealer.
used to be toothpaste back in the day..lol..
In the comics it says that they never even thought of it ahah! They eventually did borrow some from the girls
They did actually bring it up in first season. Really small things like when Charlie eating lunch with mister ajayi, he never actually eat it. And the cereal scene where charlie only stir the ceral without actually eating it.
"ahhh flies" is one of the best reaction lines i've ever heard 10:58
I was not expecting Charlie to have an eating disorder cause I haven’t read the books and I don’t know if I missed it in s1 I have also struggled with an eating disorder myself and body image issues so I can understand what Charlie may be feeling im glad there addressing it though.
in s1 there are some hints of him not eating, but in s2 is more obvious. you can see it in every ep (and i hope you are good ❤)
In season 1 you actually see him eat only once, at the end. When he has the cereals in the beginning, he doesn’t eat it but just swirls it around. At school he never eats, he opens his lunchbox and then closes it without touching anything, every time he gets asked if he wants food he replies with no, at the cinema with Nick he refuses the popcorns saying he isn’t hungry, he also refuses when Tori proposes to make pizza for them. In season 2 also, when he tells his parents Nick is his boyfriend he prepares the cereal but doesn’t touch it. When he is at Nick he say he will eat at home, ask for tea, barely drinks the tea and then at home said he ate at Nick’s, even in the school trip, when they are at breakfast he doesn’t touch food, when Nick bought him the ice cream he said he was full and ate only because Nick gave it to him, at the restaurant he pokes his food with the fork and swirls it around but doesn’t actually eat and even in episode five, no breakfast as usual, lies about being full and even when Karuff brings him the sandwitch and Nick gives him the croissant. He takes one small bite each, and immediately stops. It’s realistic because it’s subtle, no one notices and most people just assume other eat without problems so they don’t pay attention to it
Also there are slight mentions of Charlies eating disorder. In the scene where he tells his parents about him dating Nick he is fake making cereal. He always says no to food and asks for tea instead and then doesn't really ever fully finish the tea. Tori offers to make food for Charlie in season 1 and he is quick to say no. And lastly he is always wearing long sleeves, even when they went to beach in season 1.
I prefer that they put this in subtly and didn't ever really bring it up because that how a lot of eating disorders go, they go unnoticed because a lot of the little things don't seem that serious until its too far down the line. Also the fact that Nick isn't really forcing Charlie to eat and there is no "shoving food" at him and more of a "i am here for you and i care about you".

If you look back and really pay attention to season 1 you’ll notice the subtle hints of Charlie’s eating disorder. Anyway, love your reactions! Can’t wait for more!❤
This has to be one of the best episodes of the season, it touched on so many of the relationships and its one of the closest to the comics so its just one of my personal favorites.
there's actually a scene in season 1 in which Charlie goes to the art room to "have lunch", but ends up not eating anything
First season: Tori offered to make pizza for dinner after Charlie's "maybe it would be better if I didn't exist" breakdown, and Charlie said he wasn't hungry.
If you rewatch season 1 you notice Charlie avoids eating then. It’s subtle but becomes a big part of his story throughout the books
This is just such a good episode! Tao & Elle finally got their shit together! If you go back and watch season 1, you'll actually notice several hints at his eating issues.
In season one, you can notice signs and details hinting of Charlie's eating disorder. Like for example, in one scene he is shown with a full bowl of cereal that he pushes around with his spoon.
i never realized but Charlie’s ED was hinted at in season one also, as for season two they’ve ramped up the hints every episode before this one.
Tao is like the overprotective mom friend of the group
11:07 i was not prepared to hear rob say “my one true pair” in 2023 haha
They didn't bring it up but they laid the foundation in season 1 where he always have good but you never see him eat any of it.
while they didn't brought it up in s1, they did strongly hint at charlie's eating disorder during the first season, very subtle hints like him not eating the cerals in ep1, not wanting to eat popcorn at the cinema, not wanting tori to make a pizza for him... i think i missed some but you get what i mean!
The eating disorder wasn’t mentioned in season one but you can see him avoiding food in season one. He plays with his cereal more than he actually eats it and he turned down his sister making them dinner saying he wasn’t hungry.
In the comics, the girls did actually give Charlie makeup to cover it up but only after everyone saw it. Haha, the guys didn't even think about it.
if you go back and watch season 1, Charlie rarely eats, he always declines offers for food, or just plays with his food.
14:15 -- if you go back and rewatch the first season more carefully, they "M. Knight Shyamalan" Charlie having an eating disorder (anorexia) the entire time: in many scenes, he's notable as moving food around in his bowl/on his plate, but not actually eating anything even when everyone else is; he also declines food when offered (such as when his sister offers to make dinner, or Nick offers popcorn at the movies, etc.). Only when Charlie is feeling especially happy/waxing stronger do we see him eating, as such, when they have the group date for milkshakes before the concert at school. But otherwise, Charlie lowkey doesn't eat onscreen and is a sort of "it was there the entire time you just didn't notice it", Shyamalan-style of build up on that issue.
"Eyes wide open, why where they opened?" BAAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The eating disorder was hinted at in the first season for sure but it was made more apparent during the second season which I kinda like as it shows how you may not notice how someone is struggling with their issues if you don’t pay attention to it
The fact I was so surprised to hear that Ben wants Charlie back and accuses Nick of stealing Charlie from him when Ben literally pushed him to Nick by Ben mistreating him, pretending not to know him, stalking Charlie & tried to play nice after everything that happened I don’t think Charlie would want Ben back since Charlie already got a great boyfriend.
Does Ben know Charlie is not a object,he’s a person who is capable of making his own decisions? and one of them is choosing who he dates. Ben gotta live with the regret of losing Charlie to Nick and the idea that Charlie DOESN’T WANT HIM BACK.
If Ben did want to try to get Charlie back,he needs to go through Nick (His current boyfriend),Charlie’s friends and MOST IMPORTANTLY CHARLIE’S SISTER because if Tori were to know what Ben did to her brother & almost assault him,Tori would literally already make Ben’s funeral plans and wouldn’t get caught.
I’m pretty sure if Harry’s crew & Ben met Tori they will get SO SCARED that they will pee or even poop their pants. But hey at least they all are not in a casket… yet.
Speaking of which does anyone want a scene where Tori is defending Charlie to Harry’s crew & Ben that they will all get scared to death that they will back off if Tori said “Leave my brother alone or I’m planning your funeral soon. So if you don’t want to find out what I’m capable of when I’m defending my family I suggest back away if you don’t want to be a dead man in a open casket”
Tori Spring is literally the Wednesday Addams of Heartstopper since she would do anything for her family and IS NOT AFRAID TO GO THE EXTRA EXTENT when she has to defend them even if it means her doing the unthinkable. LOVE TORI❤
Like if you want a scene with Tori defending her brother to Harry’s crew & Ben. And comment if you were to imagine if Tori saw Charlie getting bullied by Harry’s crew and what she would do.
rn im sitting in the middle of a thunderstorm with no power and a tornado warning, so I REALLY needed this video......TAO AND ELLE ARE MY LITERAL PARENTS🤭😭💕ive never screamed so much during heartstoppers before😭
been through that, it's really scary 😭 you good btw?
It's been like 9 hours you are still alive right?
@@AvToonz yea im good the powers back. thx for asking🤭
@@aaliyahbrown5739 ok so I'm not talking to a dead person! Good!
They did bring it up in season one. When Charlie has a cereal bowl but is just playing with the spoon and never actually eats it. Then when he told Tori he feels like he's just ruining people's lives and she offers to make a Pizza for dinner and he says he's not hungry. And after that, in the cinema, Nick wants to buy some popcorn but Charlie rejects it as well. They are little hints but in S2 it is more noticeable. So sad for Char:(
Charlie’s E.D. is somewhat evident in Season One. When you see him with food, he’s basically just holding it or pushing it around a bit.
I genuinely wait for these everyday since you guys posted the first one!!
In season one, they do set up Charlie's disordered eating but they don't draw attention to it... they just lay a few moments in there subtlely that lay a foundation for this part of the story.
On a totally different note, I enjoy watching y'all react to this show so much - you bring such warmth and kindness and fun to your reactions and it makes all the splendidness of the show even more delightful.
Thank you for what you do here.
10:17 I GAVE U ALL I HAD AND U TOSSED IT IN THE TRASH 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
They hinted at the eating disorder very subtle in the first season. To me it was very clear, But i have also had an eating disorder, so i can see it going over anyones heads.
Enjoyed your comments/reaction from the serious (Charlie) to the fun (Tao/Elle). Thanks guys.
It kinda was in the first season, in the last episode after the whole argument with Tao. Charlie was upset and rumminating in his room while playing the drums and then his sister came to talk to him. He explained the whole situation with ben and how miserable he made him feel. He said he made him feel like he was ruining his life and then Charlie proceeded to express suicidal thoughts to her.. She then comforted him and suggested to make pizza for them and said he wasn't very hungry.
I love the just staring from you 3 just so focused on the show it's really funny for me idk why 😭 edit: I really really love the music that they used for this season "fall in love with a girl" by Cavetown was literally the perfect song for that moment
S1 you can see Charlie turns down food whenever he is stressed. Especially ep 7 after the cinema Tori asks him to eat and he refuses before breaking down. And since ep 1 here, like hin hesitating buying chocolate
14:04 hahahahaha you're the best!!
Your reactions are very comforting!!
We will always support you all. Keep working hard as always.
I CANT BELIEVE YOU CUT OFF “MON AMORE” moment😂
I heard that that scene broke the Internet 🤣
@@susanmallet766 that scene made me explode😂
If you watch closely, Charlie barely eats on S1. He never touches his lunch at school, on episode 1 he's just playing with his cereal, he said to Tori he wasn't hungry when she offered pizza, at the beach date he takes a bunch of fries and actually just eats like 3. Slight hints, but it's there
Oh and on a promotional photo of them drinking milkshakes, he's the only one not touching the straw.
In season 1 episode 8 if you look closely during Nick and Charles date at the beach, Charlie grabs some chips, eats a bit, and puts them back in the box
Great reaction! Thanks for sharing
0:34 the way he says it nonchalantly and the other’s reactions IJBOL
You guys are the older brothers I wish to god I’d had when I was a teenager. Just wanted you to know that ❤
❤❤❤❤❤Screaming for this episode
Charlie's eating disorder was never explicitly shown in season 1 but there are signs if you look back
Actually Charlie's eating disorder was hinted to very slightly in season one - you would see him with a bowl of cornflakes, just stirring it, never eating them. When he was sitting outside with his friends, his packed lunch would rarely be touched. On the beach trip, when they were sharing fish and chips together, Charlie's face of looking sick when he ate one chip. Little hints were there foreshadowing season two.
Thanks, Zuff! Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Bryce! 💞 #ReelTime #EurosLyn #Heartstopper
Charlie’s ED is not “per se” mentioned in the first season but IT IS present, very subtly if you pay close attention to what and when he eats. That’s the thing about ED’s they’re “sneaky” in that sort of way, they’re not particularly noticeable in the beginning but they unravel quickly and make things very very messy. This is very important in the books, and I guess it will be relevant in the next season, so be on the lookout for it
"ah flies" 😂😂😂
It is hinted to in the first season when Tori asks if Charlie wants pizza for dinner ect and he says no and anytime he’s shown with food he never actually eats it except when he and Nick go to the beach and get Chips from the chippy on the pier xx
In the first season, if there were small winks, Charlie didn't eat, played with his food, or simply said he wasn't hungry. An example is when they went to the movies, and another when Tori tells him that she's ordering pizza, and he tells her that he's not hungry, they were subtle, but there were little winks to this.
2:54 I love Tao's crazy asian stare. It feels both hilarious and serious at the same time.
“ I pledge Elle-giance, to the Rainbow flag, of the Untied States of Charlie
And to Issacpublic, for which Nick stands, one nation under Tao
Indivisible, with Ben and Harry in Jail and justice for all”
Their were a few sighs about charlies eating disorder in the first season like when tori asked if charlie wanted any pizza and when he was playing with his cereal.
Been watching your reactions for so long and i wasnt even subscribed, now i am. Also, the guy w the blue hoodie is so cute 🫶🏻
Charlie’s ED hinted at a few times in the first season! In the beginning of the first ep he doesn’t eat his cereal, just pushes it around. He never eats the lunches he has packed when he hides in the art room during lunch. And at the movie theatre when they were upset by Harry, Nick asks him what he wants for a snack and he says he’s not hungry.
I've been watching most of your guy's series in a binge on my ps5c and I use the playlist feature so I don't have to press on the next one, but you guys didn't add episode 6-8 in the playlist of season two and I was like "please tell me they didn't just stop watching it" 😭😭
They alluded to Charlie's eating disorder a little bit in Season 1 but not explicitly. We are in for a wild emotional ride, guys.
There were hints in season 1. Charlie alone in the art room but not really eating lunch, a scene where he just swirls his cereals, one in the movie house where Nick tries to.get them popcorn but Charlie says he's not hungry... so season 3 will defo tackle his EO more
Charlie's eating disorder was hinted at in the first season if you watch it again you will notice.
I remember wearing turtlenecks in summer ...
- In this episode we are introduced to how fragile charlie is !!!😭
this comment is so ironic based on what charlie says in the finale
but he is really fragile and so proof of that he has been trying to be strong since the beginning and little by little we see that he suffers from internal problems such as nervousness@@acailoves
@@cristianogoodin7594 just because someone is struggling a bit doesn't make them fragile. charlie literally says he doesn't want to be seen as fragile
But it doesn't change the fact that he is different things.
he tries to carry a burden that is not his alone without realizing how bad it is doing@@acailoves
@@cristianogoodin7594 that doesn't make him fragile
They're are very subtle hints in season 1 about Charlie's eating disorder.
In episode 1 when he finds out Ben has a girlfriend, the next morning he's looking into a bowl of cereal and not eating it
In episode 8, when he says he feels like he ruins peoples lives and Tori offers to make pizza, he says he's not hungry
I think there's another example but can't remember off the top of my head
But yeah some seeds were sown in season 1 but subtle enough that you don't really notice it at first
Think you’re the first reaction that’s noted Isaac’s words’ affect on Harry 👌😄
I love my gay (and bi, actually) sons
It was hinted throughout the first season
In the firsr season there were times he didnt eat or refused to eat (when he and Tori had their moment and he refused pizza sayong he wasnt humgry, for example)
The eating disorder was hinted at in the 1st season, but if u didn't read the comics you wouldn't really know. There is more to it which they will show in this season as well.
Yaas im early. Been waiting for the reaction
The first season covers book 1 and 2 and in those the eating disorder is also only shown in the background and not discussed so it makes sense that the show did the same.
This season only covers book 3 and here, it is first noticed and brought up by Nick like in the show BUT this will only grow in Importance and to be honest it is probably one of the darkest story threads in Heartstopper
10:16 eyes wide open...why were they open? not the bruno mars reference
flies!!! lmao
10:57 i laughed out loud omg
Yess❤🎉
Rob with the OTP lmaoooo
why is it a hickie? we call it a lovebite in the UK. EDIT I heard Harry calling it a hickey. I'll have to ask my gen Z child if she calls it that or if the term was used for international audiences
I believe there are other terms for hickey too, like kissmark or lovemark
We definitely call it a hickey in the uk too what 😂
It uses lovebite in the comic, but honestly it's been a hickey in the UK for at least a decade.
Charlie's eating disorder was very subtly hinted at in Seaone one, but you'd need to pay very close attention. This season addresses it obviously much more directly
I just love that: them in season 1, harry appears: 😡🤬😠
Now, harry appears: 🤣😂🤣
In every reaction they skip the best part of the episode "Mon amour" 😢❤
in the books, the eating disorder is more obvious, but the way they do it in the show is pretty subtle. you'd only notice it if you've struggled with it, or know the signs. i have an eating disorder, and honestly the way he portrayed it was incredibly accurate. this was a rough episode but but it was a beautiful one.
Back when I watched season 1, I didn’t know Charlie struggled with an ED. But I got informed when I got informed we would have a season 2, and then I rewatched season 1 and there are some subtle hints of an ED with Charlie. As someone who has struggled with one in the past, I think it is very important to bring awareness that males/men/boys can struggle with ED’s ❤️🩹. And as I have watched this season, I couldn’t help but get emotional with this storyline because I agree, one person is simply not enough of a support system 🥺 Charlie deserves ED recovery and everyone is valid of it as well ❤️🩹
7:34 im losing my shit!!!!!!!
Harry's attempt at redemption proves that Isaac needs more lines. Im actually surprised Harry took his advice to heart ad didn't just make a joke about it. And then we have Ben. Ben, Ben, Ben. What can I say? It's tough going through s**t when you don't know what or who you are, or don't want to/are afraid to admit it. That doesn't by any means justify what he did or the way he treated Charlie, and I understand why everyone still hates him, but part of me really feels bad for the kid. He knows he screwed up, but he doesn't know how to make it right. A lot of people have gone through that and behaved in a similar way. It's not ok, but he is still a scared teen, and he is trying, hes just not really good at it. He's not there yet. I always go😮 by the "if I can understand, I can forgive but I'll never forget" rule, but I don't see that happening with these guys.
Charlie only eats once in the whole of the first season - which is one chip at the beach in the last episode.
It’s a massive part of book 4
The opening minutes of this episode is brilliant comedy >>>>>>>>>>>>>
Tao is a Bothered King 🔥
there were small hints in season 1, definitely more hints this season. very obvious charlie is avoiding food, lying about eating already. simply making excuses. it does get worse and after finishing season 2 you’ll discover more of what’s been under the surface with charlie which is 💔. so basically charlie has been suffering the entire s1 till now without anyone knowing. season 3 will also be shattering cause charlie’s mental health goes down hill from there:(
❤❤❤
Just curious, but Is there a reason why you skip the whole scene a lot of the time? I was waiting to see you three react to certain things and then the scene is cut.
