Baker Mountain: Trail or Trial?

  • Baker Mountain, anybody? It's not as bad as they claim. There are views (though it was cloudy/thunder-boomy on our hike), and the footbed you walk on is a mossy, ferny wonderland.
But first you've gotta hike Number Four Mountain. And that's where most folks bow out. Number Four, in and of itself, is one of the most popular hikes in the Moosehead Region. No problem there. No, the problem is when you tack on the other near-10 miles of the Baker Mtn, which, combined with Number Four's 3.4 round-trip mileage (essentially resulting in a 14-mile jaunt) that drives hikers away.
That, and the fact that there's no view on Baker's summit. Sorry for burying the lead. My bad.
But the going from Number Four's summit to Baker's summit is a major hiker's paradise, albeit bereft of massive, Katahdin-sized views.
If it helps, there are plans to create a campsite. And if I get my way there'll be a side-trail to a rock field, from which...major views. Alas, it's on another landowner's property, so that might take time...
Good things come to those who wait!
    Enjoy!
