NORTH WOODS WALKS
Приєднався 4 сер 2014
After writing for 20 years about the natural (and hidden) wonders of Northern Maine in my popular guidebook, North Woods Walks, now I'm adding visuals to encourage everyone to get out and find their very own Happy Trail.
Will climbing Jackman's Slidedown Mountain be the death of me?
At last...Slidedown Mountain.
My first view of Slidedown Mt. was from Sally Mt. All I could see was sheer cliffs. My second view of Slidedown was from MUCH closer...and it still had those cliffs, plus a boulder field at its base. I wanted to climb it in the worst way, but...things got in the way.
I did contact the land manager, to see if there was any trail at all. Not so much, he replied. But there were old roads that came darn close to this marvel of the Moose River Region, and I took advantage of them, walking over six miles, round-trip, just to gaze at that view. Sadly, I didn't have nearly enough time, as work was calling. I knew right then that I was coming back.
My third view of Slidedown came a few weeks later, bringing Ms. Amy along. We also had a secret weapon: bicycles. Cut down travel time immensely! It also allowed me to look at the road a LOT closer than I'd ever thought was possible-i.e., i had a wipeout. Don't film and drive, ppl!
This time, we still couldn't find any trail (subsequent queries to the land manager resulted in a potential rock cairn, which we didn't see until the hike was over!). But we did find a goat path to the border swath, and from there quite easily made it to the Monument. Our hope was that we could climb up Slidedown via the border swath, but one look up at the cliff face told a different story.
So we bush-and-boulder whacked our way nearly the whole way to the summit. It was a slightly hazy day (those durn Canadian fires!) but we were satisfied.
For now.
Enjoy!

THE PATHS WE TREAD #nature #maineoutdoors #soberlife
Not all trails are created equal...nor all hikers. My journey could have taken a far more drastic turn were it not for an intervention of sorts. The woods and its trails helped, but so did-do-the many travelers along my way. Enjoy! Kineo Kid
ENGULFED: The Deadly Beauty of Gulf Hagas!
Переглядів 13714 днів тому
How, exactly, does one have a 'different' hike in Gulf Hagas, you ask? By stretching the boundaries. By going where few have gone before. By daring to trod where the masses could never go. When I tell folks that I've done Gulf Hagas, I have to be specific: that I wasn't ON the trail-rather, I was IN the very bowels of the gorge. Like, up to my neck in water. "Oh, yeah," they'll respond. "We did...
Adventures with Bill: Cliffs, Ledges & Wasps-Oh My!!

Sometimes, a hike can be fun in unexpected ways. A while ago, I got to tag along with some of the funniest hikers (Bill, Sandy & Karen) I've ever met on a hike to Wilson Ledges on a beautiful day. Every step was a total laugh-fest that I won't soon forget! Enjoy! P.S. - Yeah, I went AI with the thumbnail. I tried something different. If you want more, or less, please let me know in the comments...
An Enchanting Hike Up Bulldog Peak
Переглядів 31Місяць тому
This might get long...if you gotta, read the info at the bottom of this description. Years ago, somebody told me about a trail running along Enchanted Pond, which lies between both Shutdown Mountain (i.e., Bulldog Peak) and Coburn Mountain. Sounded cool, but I didn't get out there until 2017. I wish I lived there. Massive cliffs on either side of the 'pond' (188 feet deep) look like two bulldog...
Mosquito Mt Father's Day Hike!

Think a 2,000-footer can't kick your butt? Then you haven't gone up Mosquito Mt! I've been a major fan of the 'skeeter' for ages, it seems, and the views never get old. This was a solo adventure, and while I didn't intend to make a video of it (I had discrepancies pertaining to the guidebook, so I went out to Mosquito to figure it out!) I'm glad I did, as it just so happened to be Father's Day....
A Journey to Lobster Lake

It has been over 16 years since I laid eyes on Lobster Lake. Ditto the trail to the summit of Lobster Mountain. Needless to say, I was in dire need of some Lobster Therapy! Enjoy! Kineo Kid
