I am an Australian who recently moved back (for family reasons and for a couple of years only) after spending the last 20 years overseas and it is not until I have spent this extended time here, that I have realized how dire the situation is. The country has a first world standard of living based on a third world economic base ie the vast majority of our exports are primary products (mining and farming) with a small services sector contribution and nearly nothing in the way of manufactures. The political class are naive at best, but in reality are in all liklehood incompetent and this goes for all sides of the political spectrum. After all, even the Treasurer recently admitted, that the only reason we have had recent budget surpluses and the federal government finances in reasonable condition is because a brown rock mined in the deserts of WA is fetching high prices at the moment. I keep saying to people here that the country is living in a fools paradise and one day the old “she’ll be right” attitude will bring the country down, although the majority look at me like I have come from another planet. I find it all very sad because it is blinding obvious that the political class are willing to send the country down, in the name of political orthodoxy. A political class made up of professional politicians, most without much in the way of real world experience, is destroying the country, but they can’t see it and actually believe they are doing a good job.

They need min 10% growth for their share holders per year . Electricity went up 30% , gas even more . Food . So they need to charge you more than inflation , and more people to consume . As house prices go , government will do anything they can to make them more expensive , more council rate , due to charges on evaluation of property tax , and to force people into apartments , even though our island is mostly empty , all along the coast and Tasmania . I know it's convenient to blame politicians and it's true that Australia's energy policy (or lack thereof) and immigration ponzi schemes are dumb, but I doubt even cheap energy prices would bring back much manufacturing to Australia. There are so many other things that make Australian manufacturing uncompetitive like wages, regulation and a myriad of other costs. All more competitive energy prices might do is slow down the decline a bit. The reality is that Australians would actually need to want to work in factories, which they don't - and be prepared to do so six days a week, 12 hours a day, like they do in China for far less pay. A lot of the post WW2 prosperity of Australia was simply based on dumb luck where a lot of the rest of the world was destroyed by war or operating under backward economic systems. Given that manufacturing is no longer competitive, debt-based housing speculation based on mass immigration and largely fake international students became the only game in town.

They're totally naive in regard to the real world. The ALP under Hawke and Keating worked in tandem with the unions to systematically destroy the manufacturing sector. Canberra made the disastrous decision to dismantle tariff protection and embrace globalism. The unions simply made manufacturing too complicated and expensive. Also, the standard of Australian manufactured good was falling through the floor. Australian made cars, for example, had a very high rate of immediate after sales service due to fault of manufacture. Who the hell wants to invest in a.country where that national leader has been locked out of his office for six months by a terrorist group?. Change needs to come because the major parties don’t have a clue. Their moves always cost taxpayers and employees and benefit foreign owned corporations. They need to stop selling our future with little or no return. We should be all living well off in this country instead of struggling to live.

It don't matter who the leaders are, Australia was a colony before 1901 and still is, with an added feature, now also a vassal. The people that run Australia do not live in Australia, and any figure head, come leader that wants to rock the boat will be given a lesson by whatever means necessary. It's such a shame, the country has so much potential, unfortunately their claws are in to deep.

Remember when a successful businessman nearing the end of his working life, would enter politics to "give back to the country for giving him the success that he achieved" and did it OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET, and the "Parliamentary Pension", was a thank you for your service to the country as a ;politician, AFTER they retired from politics?
Politics SHOULD NOT BE A CAREER CHOICE, nor should it be as high paying as the private sector.
"But if you do not pay private sector wages, they will not enter parliament."
GOOD, second rate HACKS who can't cut it in the real world, parasiting out of the public purse shouldn't be REWARDED for being the failures they are.

we need 'adult' politicians NOT the current mishmash wannabes. We don't need career politicians we need professionals who are experts in a field and are able to contribute. Cut ALL current advisories, consultants, etc.that are eating away progress. Cheap energy without 'clean coal', gas and nuclear is a pipe's dream. Australia missed a chance for growth by adopting 'cheap and cheaper' mindset that drove manufacturing towards lower cost foreign shores.
