Not good, when you think back to the groundbreaking AI soldiers in the later levels of Half Life so many years ago. Covering each other, reloading, flanking etc.
Yea, ai in gaming is strange, it doesn't progress the way ai does when implemented in real life. The ai in a game is just a feature, so how complex it is going to depend on a number of factors. For a game like cod, they're more concerned on how enemies spawn, and where they are placed. Their isn't any real complex pathfinding because the purpose of the ai IS to be a shooting gallery. But if you look at great classic stealth games, their purpose is to immerse the player. In COD space is cheap. You're quickly going from one section to the next. In a game such as Chaos Theory or Thief 2, space is expensive, as it requires so much thought order to move forward. In COD your health regens, in Theif you die in a couple of hits, and you're character actually sucks at fighting, encouraging you to avoid everyone. For a game like that to be engaging, the environment and characters need to be more believable. You aren't diving around head shotting people. You're slowly walking from one room to the next, in sometimes massive and complex levels. By having better ai, a stealth game will have more depth in terms of how you approach problems. Though Half Life 1 and 2 aren't stealth games, and in fact the very reasons COD campaigns work the way they do. This is because they are built off of the narrative foundations Half Life laid down. Both Half Life games aim to sell to the player on the idea of the fictional universe they've built, where as COD is trying to be a Michael Bay film.
Great game play but my only problem with COD is that there are too many cut scenes that provide no real relevance to the game. More action less cut scenes.
