$50 Paint Job on $50,000 Toyota Tacoma. Roll on Rustoleum Professional results?

- This was a wild experiment and actually a fair amount of work. However there were some advantages to rolling on Rustoleum paint instead of spraying paint with an HVLP gun. I was able to paint outside, the masking was minimal, I could pick out debris from wet paint and the paint leveled out quite well. I also installed some really nice looking decals on the Tacoma. I originally considered raptor lining everything. But raptor liner is forever.
Plastidip would have ripped right off as soon as I hit some brush on the trails.
The fiberglass was trashed so after seeing this on the UA-cams i thought this would be a fun experiment to try before tossing the old glass. I think I squeezed a little more life out of the glass. So no harm done.
I may end up getting new glass and have it professionally painted. But for now this worked great and made for a fun project/video.

Are you planning to paint it again? I thought about the rhino being permanent too, but unless you're planning to paint it again it's pretty good! And really great for off-roading! Check out U-pol on Amazon. You get the whole kit with air gun. A few of the guys on my department did their trucks and I'm going to do my Suzuki Samurai, I'll send pics when done!

Yes it was as a bodyshop owner it was killing me to see this. I would have done it properly for free. It would have looked new in 3 hours

I love see the Tacoma get some love. Ur channel and LLOD is what made me wanna get a Tacoma. Slowly been modding my 18 TRD OR. Half the products I have on my truck are from ur reviews. Ur tuck is an icon in the Taco world. That’s no exaggeration
Same here they inspired me to get into off roading. Loved both of their tacons but I decided to go a different route with a zr2 instead.
I’m a house painter . Roll the coats even and once your get paint on one area don’t come back to it after paint is even on area .

I did this on an old Pontiac a few years ago. This totally works. You should wet sand after every 3 coats to avoid any orange peel. Buffing at the end is key with carnauba. Great work!

Maxx, you have BIG BALLS! Good effort for sure, but instead of paying thousands for a wrap, which is semi-temporary, have you considered having the whole truck Line-X'd or Raptor Lined? It would look great and provide protection off road.

I actually like the rustoleum better than the other paint
With tint or decals squeegee from the center and work the bubbles/wrinkles from the center to the outside.

Don’t underestimate the power the roller! I’ve painted cabinets worth probably more then $50k and it turned out great!

I did the same to my shit box 91 Acura integra but I actually sprayed the whole car with a paint gun hooked up to a air compressor cost me 18 dollars 2 small cans and man it came out super clean ! I was amazed of how it turned out and to this day don’t got one problem still running strong 💪🏻 looking flawless this was in 2014 btw
So sad. At one point this was an iconic Tacoma. Hard to watch it’s neglect. Would be nice to see this truck in the hands of someone who cares for it.

Not bad. VGG did a $120 Acrylic Enamel paint job with a kit off ebay. Turned out real nice for a trucked that was going to be used. Need a spray gun though.

Brought me back to when I did this to my first car.
I painted my Baja bug with rust oleum but I use a little bit of Hardner and I sprayed it on came out amazing!

I didn't think it would look that good. Turned out to be a great paint job.
If you use a brush immediately after rolling it on you will get a super smooth finish
White and red paint are the hardest to match. You either deal with the mismatch or repaint the entire thing

I cringed watching this at first, but then after hearing your reasoning, I agree. Its a 4x4 and will be used as such. Still a beautiful truck that I want. lol
As for the plastidip... its a lot more robust than you may think. I wheeled with plastidip for 2 years without any tears/damage to the plastidip. Just need to get it on right.

Should've used a graco airless sprayer. They work great and give a smooth surface.
Maxx dont use raptor liner, I built a bumper less than a year ago and used raptor liner and its chips very easy. Its over hyped and I wish I hadn't Used it.
My buddy just finished putting a manual fj tcase in his 2016 3rd gen! So far works great and he likes being able to switch into 4low much faster. However his dash doesn't like it so he has his old tcase "computer" still wired in and comes up the shifter and hangs out in the cab with him lol. You should make a video on the swap and if you find a better solution to the dash lighting up ill show him what you find out if you do!

Wet sanding with 600 -800 between coats will make it really smooth and 1500-2k then buff

water with soap or shampoo is what you need to be able to adjust the decal then hit it with the heater.

I painted a Hyundai Elantra with Rustoleum out of a Harbor Freight gun. It looked so good, but then it started storming. We ended up with a texture like a refrigerator. Lol

It's funny how this video is getting such mixed reactions. All I did was refurbish garbage fiberglass panels. I didn't harm the truck in any way, it actually looks alot better and McNeil will send me new glass for free the moment I ask them so just relax 😄 The income from this video will pay for the mods that actually matter like fixing the 4x4 system. I do this shit for a reason, so that I personally don't have to pay out of pocket for a single thing on this truck or litterally anything on this channel for that matter. Let that sink in.. @@Maxx.Powell Ok, well I wasnt aware of the whole story, but being a bodyman by trade, it just reminded me of the old days when people couldnt afford to get their vehicle painted so they would use a paint brush or roller to paint the vehicle and it just looked terrible but they had a good excuse, they had no money and didnt really care how the vehicle looked like, it was just transportation but I was just looking at that beautiful Tacoma and wondering why anyone would take a paint roller to it, is all...

I raptor lined my 3rd gen tacoma. I take it out in the desert every weekend and only wash it about once a year, and it always looks clean.
