I struggle to pick a favourite! But i will say - the gold sg has given me some of the best and most unexpected tones i’ve had and is certainly never leaving
For me, it’s the DR Z Z-80, by a comfortable margin. The openness and chime, balanced with a warm, but tight deep bass was not matched by any of the other amps. Frankly, I’ve never heard a humbucker neck pick-up sound so good.
I have yet to run my big tone test, it requires more equipment for switching and what-not. The Z-80 did seem to be more of the amp that I wanted than anything else so when Dr. Z discontinued it I bought as many as I could, but if you are fast enough with the wallet there's one left in Georgia, and one in Essex. (but I am working on more funds, too.)
that deluxe sounded incredible. I have two with Alessandro speakers-not as good as that sound with the bbl. it’s all subjective I guess. great vid. love those pickups. got a link?
Thanks James. Great video. It was the Magnatone for me, followed by Super Reverb. Would be great to hear them at edge of breakup and then also being pushed with a boost. Cheers
Awesome comparison! It’s so nice to see a video with so many clean tone examples. Did the Swart Antares ever come to mind while you were doing this video? Would have been another interesting contender for clean tones if you still had it around. Thanks so much for your content!
Great video James! Extra demo time at the end is great, could it be a segment for an "in the mix" comparison maybe? Would be awsome to hear the amps in context with other instruments. Got a nice player Gibson '95 SG ebony with ebony fretboard (dot, no binding) came with Gibson 490R / 490T, quite nice sounding, very assertive, good clarity and barking mids, not muddy at all, but still very bass-heavy and a maybe too high output for my taste: do you have nice recommandations for pickups replacement? Keep up with the vids, I'll follow your channel closely!
Thanks! I’d love to do more in the mix stuff but that would add significant time to an already long few days. But one day hopefully i’ll manage! I’d definitely recommend some sunbears - check out my giveaway q&a from a few videos ago and you can still enter to win Sunbear Humbuckers 👍
Great video , I would have loved to have seen the Tone King Royalist as one of the 17 .Most notably because ive been contemplating getting one for some time and would have love to see your clean tests on it
Awesome video. Thank you, James. For me, the Deluxe Reverb sounds better than it should given the company it's in. They all sound good with their own flavor.
That Magnatone is special, cool video. Curious about your journey with ES guitars found your channel with the ES-355 video & it seems you've moved on from them. Cheers
I am not a fan of Blues and blues licks, I find them boring. However, my compliments to your gear choice and your videos. The production, the sound, the lighting, excellent. The demos, excellent. The fact that your demos are not crazy distorted stands out.
I’m keen to the warm bloom sound with some slight shimmer when attacked. For me my top three are Magna-tone Twilighter, Bartel Starwood and the Two Rock Joey Landreth. I own the Joey and Twilighter and looks like I need to go shopping. For me it is the touch response in these amps.
I'd be interested in hearing which amps are best at clean and breakup with or without a pedal (without an attenuator...that could be another video)amps for bedroom levels/no hear protection needed. Also, would like to hear sunbear vs throbak pafs. Thanks for all the work on these videos!
Great video, I recently got the Friedman vintage that, sound wise far from my 1973 jmp, nice to see it in your rotation. Btw I have a TR vintage deluxe (35w version) that is more versatile and has a sweeter of sound that my vintage one (imho).
Here’s the deal w Bartel. The treble and bass are defeating each other. Just like many bf circuits. However when you decrease one or both mids increase.
Is it just me or every time you step on any of the pedals, half of the tone character goes away? Anyway thanks for the great video, a lot of work to make it! If you don't mind, I'd humbly suggest when comparing such different amps to play them from the quietest to the loudest - that way your ears would better adjust to every next amp's tone than vice versa or random. Thanks again, great job!
Well, I sure like the Z-80, but I hope that I have access to a few stray shekels when Dave Friedman releases too few of the hundred-Watt Plex, if and when that occurs. I probably won't, but miracles sometimes happen. 🎸
To tell you the truth, when we talk about pristine clean tones, I cannot tell which one is "better". They are just "different". Why would Fender cleans be superior to others for example?

Hmmm, I did notice that … thanks for picking up on it 👍🏻
Love the gold SG! Especially love that you can see the wood grain and it’s not just a solid color.
Of all your guitars, and you have a LOT of FINE guitars, your TV Gold SG is my absolute favorite...and I'm a Strat guy.
I struggle to pick a favourite! But i will say - the gold sg has given me some of the best and most unexpected tones i’ve had and is certainly never leaving
ew you're gay, only gay people are 'strat guys'
@@JamesOnGuitar I'm new to your channel. Can you tell me a little more about the SG? I've never seen one like that. Is it Custom Shop? A refin?
@ hi, thanks for watching! It’s a custom shop 64 reissue - in tv gold. I’ve only ever seen one other, so i’m not sure if they do them regularly
strat guys are all gae
When I asked you the question about clean tones I didn't expect the best clean tone amp comparison on YT to follow. Superb 🎉
haha, thanks! and thanks for the question :)
James, your videos are always beautifully produced, and your presentation skills top notch. Keep up the amazing work mate!
Thank you! Much appreciated

I feel like this video is a really good balance of guitar playing and talking I appreciate that!
Always enjoy your channel; if you can get your hands on a Carr Mercury V for a review sure you will be impressed.
Loved the Princeton. A classic 😀
I‘m totally with you, the Bartel is really special!
Great Video,
I enjoyed that James ..!
I’d love to hear these beautiful amps slightly overdriven, again with Stuart’s Sunbears 😉
that deluxe sounded incredible. I have two with Alessandro speakers-not as good as that sound with the bbl. it’s all subjective I guess. great vid. love those pickups. got a link?
1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb - what a super cool amp 🤩🤟
Thanks James. Great video. It was the Magnatone for me, followed by Super Reverb.
Would be great to hear them at edge of breakup and then also being pushed with a boost. Cheers

It’s so hard to nail down a fave, but the Joey Landreth is lovely 👌🏻
Hey James! Great video! It would be cool to hear the same amps but at edge of breakup and also cranked up a bit into overdrive.
What, no Princeton?
Awesome video. Thank you, James. For me, the Deluxe Reverb sounds better than it should given the company it's in. They all sound good with their own flavor.

Any experience with the Matchless Chieftain compared to these?? Curious how it stacks up - incredible cleans
Awesome video! If you were to have just 1 amp out of these as a desert island amp would it be the Bartel Starwood or a different amp?
Well that gives me a video idea! I’ll answer that in a video :)

that old peavey probably needs serviced, and the hot rod if it hasn't been done, the filter caps - smoothing caps probably dried out long ago .
Here’s the deal w Bartel. The treble and bass are defeating each other. Just like many bf circuits. However when you decrease one or both mids increase.
It would be cool to hear the Z-80 with a baritone
Is it just me or every time you step on any of the pedals, half of the tone character goes away? Anyway thanks for the great video, a lot of work to make it! The Sg is the best guitar you have. Sounds fantastic in every scenario. Maybe the Giordano Gold Top second.
All the cleans with a strat. Also do one with a Les Paul with Amp overdrive (not high gain) and then boosted with a bluesbreaker or Klon
You could throw in a Swart amp in there, and how about Victory ✌️
It would be cool to compare home and studio sized amps. This is fascinating, but most of these amps are unobtainium to me.
6 3 2 rule for super reverb
Well, I sure like the Z-80, but I hope that I have access to a few stray shekels when Dave Friedman releases too few of the hundred-Watt Plex, if and when that occurs. I probably won't, but miracles sometimes happen. 🎸

Ha, a single knob Epi amp up on top of the Mag. Talk about about difference in price.
To tell you the truth, when we talk about pristine clean tones, I cannot tell which one is "better". They are just "different". Why would Fender cleans be superior to others for example?
Cleans with a strat would be great
Some amps sound greay with certain guitars, others do not.
When hearing amp or guitar demos, I prefer no effects.
Sorry, did not care for the review on clean amps…..
