She Gave A Homeless Woman Food, Then Noticed Something Didn't "Feel Right"
When a homeless woman quietly and politely asked permission to eat leftover food that was destined for the garbage bin, her pleas were ignored until something wonderful happened.
    She Just Wanted To Eat
Carmen Mendez was eating at a Raising Cane's fast food restaurant in California when she noticed a homeless woman asking fellow diners if she could eat their leftovers. They completely ignored her and purposely tossed their uneaten food in the trash bin right before her eyes.
As Carmen noted on her Facebook profile:
"Not one person said yes, they all ignored her and threw it away, it broke my heart."
This traumatic experience left the woman feeling hurt and still very hungry.
It's Not A Sin To Be In Need
Being homeless is not a sin. But many people treat the homeless as if they've personally done the world a great deal of wrong. All judgement's aside, this homeless lady just wanted some food to keep the hunger at bay and survive another day.
Thankfully, Carmen had been volunteering with the homeless for many years, and knew their struggles were real, whether due to unlucky circumstances, addictions, or mental illness.
"They don't repulse me or make me sick to my stomach. I hold them all with so much love."
And it was Carmen's love that began the prelude to this fateful night.
    The Face Of An Angel
The face of hope is sometimes disguised, but this homeless woman would soon discover it waiting for her within Carmen's generous soul.
A Withered Chicken Finger And Five Lonely Fries
Carmen was sad knowing that the poor woman went through rejection all night while searching for a warm meal. She told her boyfriend that if she saw the woman again, she would definitely give her their leftovers. Carmen anxiously scanned the restaurant as she was getting ready to leave.
"As I was gonna throw away my one leftover chicken strip and like 5 fries I heard a very quite voice ask me if I had anything left."
She happily gave the woman her leftovers, but something still didn't feel quite right.
    She Deserved Better
Carmen felt like a horrible human being for feeding the woman her meager leftovers.
"So I bought her a whole meal. She deserved a hot meal."
As Carmen was ordering the meal, she could see the disgust that customers directed toward the homeless woman for daring to sit down in a restaurant. But Carmen made sure the wait staff did not toss her out as the meal was being prepared.
The Tears She Shed Were Felt Deep
When Carmen surprised the woman with the fresh and hot meal, she didn't know that her boyfriend Fred had captured the heartfelt moment. You can almost feel the thanks the homeless woman is giving to Carmen in the hug captured by Fred.
"The look on her face said it all. I have never felt something like this...pure, real gratitude."
It is a moment Carmen says she will never, ever forget. I'm sure the homeless woman will always remember this moment as well.
    Raising Cane's To The Rescue
As a bonus happy ending to this story, Raising Cane's in Costa Mesa offered an generous donation to the homeless community. With a huge stack of gift cards, Carmen is now able to give the gift of a hot meal to those in need. But she's not going to let the opportunity to interact with the homeless end there.
"With these gift cards not only will I be able to pass them out so they can have a meal I will also be able to talk to them and see what else they need..help them find a local shelter if they are willing to accept that help."
With her experience over the years working with the homeless, I'm sure they'll gladly accept Carmen's help.
    Show Your Generosity
As this story shows, it doesn't hurt to think twice the next time you judge a homeless person. An act of kindness goes a long way in helping those who aren't always able to help themselves.

Carmen, you are a beautiful human being and to the vile people who treated the poor homeless woman with disgust, shame on you. Just remember no one knows what's round the corner for them selves or loved ones. I'm not religious, but aren't we all from the family. Human kind, KIND being the operative word.

All it takes is initiative Kristina. Just do something to help. It doesn't take a major operation to do a simple thing like help in the minute. The next time you see a person in need, and you feel as if you can solve the immediate problem... help them out with a few bucks, or maybe a meal at mcdonalds. That's what I do and I love doing it. I have been poor in the past and have been homeless. It sucks. Helping others is God's work!

You are an Angel,Carmen, you may not know it yet, but you are here for a reason. Besides protecting, feeding and hugging this Woman you listen to her! So often it is the exchange with another person that is needed almost as food! Someone to listen and also tell them a story about a special day. This was a very special for both of you. This story hits home for me. Back in 1999-2001, I was homeless as well, on the streets in NYC. Not of my own doing but by a judge who said I had to turn over almost my entire paycheck to my cheating wife during our separation, I was left with 29 dollars a week. I never begged for anything, my pride wouldn’t allow it no matter how hungry I was. I slept in a coffee house in the winter until 10 pm, that was closing time. I would then try to find a spot where I couldn’t be seen easily, if you have ever been homeless then you know why. I continued working and continued the payments. After 3 years of this my ex-wife’s mother called me and asked how I was getting along, I told her the truth and she immediately said to come live with her...I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. With a warm place to sleep and regular showers and food, I was becoming a man again. Being homeless breaks your spirit and will to live, many times I thought of ending it all, but my faith in God kept me going. I will never forget those 3 years of being homeless, I don’t wish it on anyone, it’s one of the worst things that could happen to a person. 🙁

Charles Fontanello OMG! I totally understand! NYC is so damn expensive. I know cause I live here. Many judges don't care how a middle-class man is supposed to survive after paying child support every week 😩 I'm so happy to hear your ex mother-in-law took you in. I pray you are doing much better now. May God always watch over you!

Elena Arman-Tang Thank You for your kind words, but actually my health is deteriorating, I have something called PSP on the order of Parkinson’s but much more progressive. I was given 3-5 years so far I’m in Year 6 and August will make 7 years, there’s no cure just a ton of meds to slow down the tremors and pain. Eventually it will win out but I’m not going out without a fight. Being born and raised in the Bronx, fighting is one thing we all do very well. 😊. I’m not sad about it, I just accept the fact that I now have a time limit. I’ve already made my arrangements with a friend who will carry them out for me. God Bless you for taking the time out to write to me, it’s not that often I open up to someone, especially since I have no family it’s nice to say something that’s on your mind. Thanks Again and God Bless. 🙏🏻👍🏻

Anyone who only wants money is probably just a scam artist. There are some 2nd and 3rd generation homeless people on America's streets who have no idea how to turn cash into food. Also, even if they have money, the homeless are often not welcome.

I would have gotten her something the first time. I think this story is not one of kindness, but a story about a woman breaking free from the sheeple to do the right thing.
If people did things more like this, it would be the norm and ignoring the homeless woman would be the thing people turn their noses up to.
If your child was hungry and needed help in a bad situation, would you be angry at the people that turned them away?? YES YOU WOULD.
We are ALL SOMEONE'S CHILD. We are all ONE.
This is amazing, this is great! I hope this story inspires more people to be more invested in their personal growth and kindness.
"If everyone gives a little it it adds up to a lot." Quote from my Father, he said it all the time. RIP Dad and thank you.

My family use to cook a whole extra Thanksgiving meal and bring it to a homeless man that lived by our community in the middle of the woods in a tent. I use to ask my mom to bring me by to give him a candy bar or other things and after about 8 years of doing that one day he was gone. Because of my dad I learned to work on cars and because of the helping, giving nature my mother instilled in me I offer free work on cars for low income and struggling family's, and I always stop for someone broken down on the side of the road to see if I can help.

DAN - 200,000 adults go missing in the USA every year. 800,000 kids - 300,000 by non-custodial parents, while 500,000 kids are never found. MY POINT TO YOU IS THIS: A ploy to "get" adults is a car breakdown. Be very careful. There could be another 2 or 3 people hiding behind bushes or trees. As much as I could use free work on my car, because I am very disabled woman and very low income, I always get taken advantage of. (Wish I could find someone with a heart as kind of yours). As kind as you are, BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN SOMEONE IS BROKEN DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. People have cell phones these days and can make a call to someone. I wonder what happened to the man you helped for 8 years?

As a people we should have compassion for the human race no matter what! During my existence here on the earth I've seen so much hurt & harm that has no explanation but hate & evil does exist . I don't have it all together but I love people, also there's enough in this life that NO ONE SHOULD BE HUNGRY! Hi, my husband Pete and I have been homeless, it hasn't been 2 months since I found a room to rent. People who have a place take things for granite that a homeless person cherishes, things like clean underclothes, socks, comb and toothbrush, something to hold your hair back, deodorant, a warm shower, or a place to wash your hands. Someone who has that constantly doesn't know what it is to do without. And people look down their nose at the homeless. We had police officers and hospital personnel who's attitudes changed toward us when they found out we were homeless. A heart given kindness makes a homeless person feel just a little bit human.

Carlos Phillips I know the feeling. I had made some needlepoint coasters and wanted to give-not sell-them to friends. I'm not homeless and was working at the time. I don't drive-can't afford to-and chose to walk there on the way to the library nearby with my Border Collie Tess. I hooked up my girl to the playground fence and went inside. There was an older lady sitting outside and she admired my girl, said she's watch out for her since she was in no hurry. I had enough to buy me a meal, but didn't think of dessert yet and took it outside. She happened to notice my coasters and offered to buy one just as we were about finished. I gave Tess a few-too salty and too much fat to give her too many. The lady wouldn't take no for a free one and gave me $5 for one. I decided to get a pie and went inside. The pony-tailed mgr.refused to sell it to me w/o explanation. I then figured he thought I was homeless and was selling something for money. I told the lady where I lived and that I was indeed NOT homeless. She went back inside and bought it. No more said from him.

Darlene Greywolf so true, I'm one of those, went from owning a house to disaster not due to my own fault, I use to help the homeless and homekess pups ❣🐕all the time , now I barely make it, it's amazing how invisible you become, I'm lucky to live in a van though, and I see the ones who rough it in tents, it breaks my heart especially when the temps have been in the teens💔, I always had a soft spot for the homeless but way more now, when I get back to life I will do so much more. make me so mad seeing how people just treat the homeless with disdain, I stay to myself to avoid feeling that way but some have no choice💔 I befriended an older lady last spring it was wonderful having her as a friend we parked together and everything we were always together daily looking out for eachother ❣ she ended up being one of the best people I'd ever known ❤❣ one day she didn't show up to our morning spot for coffee (December 11th) long short I went to find her and she had a massive stroke I had to call 911 to get her and her little dog out of the car,😢😢😢 if we didn't know eachother no one would have found her till it was too late,😢😢😢 she is in an assisted nursing facility now and can t talk💔💔💔 she is the sweetest lady ever and I miss her, I kept her little dog so she wouldn't go the pound. anyway I digress, this video was wonderful and you are right , no one ever knows what's around the corner, so treat everyone with respect no matter what❤❣❤

Jainy Murrphy Perhaps a truer, and more biblical prayer would be to ask God to touch our own hearts so that we actively and routinely become one of those people who feeds the hungry and helps the helpless, rather than praying for others who are already doing it!
" If one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. " - James 2:16-17
Maybe we should spend less time praying for those currently involved in mercy ministries and start praying for our own apathy.
