I'm studying industrial design here in Mexico! Definitely didn't have to build a portfolio to get into my school (here in Mexico universities usually don't ask for one) but still I find it necessary to have one just to evaluate myself as I progress. Loved this video.
Here in Sweden it's pretty different in requirements. The schools often give you assignments mandatory to do. Some of them longer like design a "safe bus stop for the 2020s or/and an onboard care package not containing more than 100 ml of shampoo, soap and toothpaste for the brand Norwegian. Some more shorter like draw a bowl of fruit and some requirements can be like minimum of 5 drawings and 3 paintings This together witch a portfolio off earlier works and even so the portfolios ar often limited by number of pages and it can be as little as 6 compared with what you showed which was quite long
Hi Jacob. So it has been a year that I'm studying Industrial Design here in Iran. I'm not happy about how they teach here. Would you guide me on how I could be accepted in your college? I'm half Filipino.
OMG You're near a 1000 subs & well deserved! I'm going into my second year of PD in Liverpool and your videos keep me motivated, please keep it up! p.s. love your moves.
that was great! i have a question, i wanna apply for character designing, my work are characters that i have designed and life drawings that i have drawn( i can draw figure imaginary, live figure and by their images) and i know body anatomy , i dont know how can i manage my portfolio, how should i start? with my characters or my figures? how should i explain about them i my portfolio i mean my characters are not items to be used,so how should i explain about them?
Hey Jacob, did you go to AUT straight from highschool? You're the only product design student that I see vlogging. Your videos and the stuff you guys do at school are cool!
Thanks, Cyrus. No, I didn't go straight from high school to university. I had two "gap years" one work on the Myrin startup and the other working full time at NZ Post as a Postie.
Hey, I wanna ask you something. How did you made that Myrin and that metal badge? If I want to put child cup design in my portofolio, should I really print a child cup then shoot a photo of it or just photoshop it? I'm just start to make portofolio fron scratch :(
Nice! 👍 You mentioned pdf. Did you mean a word document? Could my young students 12.. use a PowerPoint format for producing their portfolio? Other suggestions maybe?
Hey Jacob, let me ask you something. Is it very much necessary to go to a Design school to pursue career in Design world. How to get into some kind of project where I get to broadcast my work
I was actually homeschooled, but if you want to get into Industrial Design, then takes classes where you get to make things. If you get practice using tools like 3D printers, laser cutter, and CNC machines you will have a huge advantage when you go to uni.
Myrin Thank you so much for replying. At the moment I am taking DVC and ART. There is TEC as an option but apparently the careers lady says AUT only require s art/creativity skills.
Hey, I have Engineering background and next year I'm going for master's in graphic designing. So can you tell how to make a portfolio cause I don't have any project's for me or any client's work. So how to showcase my portfolio? Thank you💜
@@moonlight-bg7gy No, Engineering and Graphic Designing these both fields are very much different from each other. Though if you want to pursue your career in designing you can start with some online courses offered by Udemy, Coursera, Skillshare and many other or can have guidance through youtube too. There are so many channels for designing that can help you with that. Or you can pursue master's in Graphic Designing. I hope I have helped you some way!!! Thank You.
Amazing again to see this when I'm preparing my portfolio! Actually if I have no design background before, do u still think showing skills are important as well? Another thing is, how do you choose what school you want to go? have u heard about Design Academy Eindhoven? :))
Show skills that you think are relevant. What they want to see is that you are hardworking and that you are naturally creative. I chose my school because it was rated the best in the country and it had a focus on 'human-centered design' which I think is important. It wasn't just about aesthetics and making products look nice, but rather about how they function and how humans would use them. No, I haven't heard about Design Academy Eindhoven. Sorry.
Hey Myrin I’m a 12th grade high school student from India.I was having some doubts regarding to portfolio for Industrial design:1.Are you an undergraduate student or postgraduate student in design school? 2.How should I work up with my portfolio if I’m applying for design schools abroad? 3.How I should apply for design schools out of India? 4.Is it cheaper to apply for postgraduate program or undergraduate program? 5.It should include my work related to Industrial design only or I can try works from other fields as well? 6.My work needs to be of professional grade if as Iwant to apply for undergraduate programs in design? If possible, can you please make video for that,it would turn up to be very helpful for me and other Indians. If not please reply in comments.🙂🙂
It seems that you love art so much.. as for me, i don't know how much i love it but.. if i'm looking for a job that my income would be high, graphic design should not be choosed.. is that right?
Would you recommend this university to others? I'm thinking about this uni but I live in Australia so I would probably have to move, so what do you think makes it a better choice than others?
Yes, I would totally recommend AUT. It is a great place to study for the following reason. First, AUT (Auckland University of Technology) is kind of for New Zealand what MIT is for America. It is very focused on technology, engineering, science, design, and entrepreneurship which I love. We have our own Drone room, our own a marine research ship, and even our own radio telescopes which we sometimes rent out to Space X for their missions. Second, we are a relatively young university (17 years) which means we are way more agile than your traditional university (100+ years). The future is changing fast and we are a university that can keep up with it. I mean, for example, AUT is paying me to vlog because they saw my content as a great, new authentic way to show what the uni is like. I doubt any other university would let me do that. Finally, the entrepreneurial spirit is really encouraged here. They have a department dedicated to helping and funding students who want to start their own ventures. So, if you want a university that is very hands-on and practical as well as academic then it would totally be worth the move. I am loving it here. It is a really exciting place to study. Hope this helps (and I am not getting paid extra to say this). This is my honest view. :) All the best, Jacob
I'm sorry but if someone already knows how to do all those things than what's the point of getting into school? I'm sorry, I'm Greek and in my country design studies are not very development or it might be that we're not so much educated on it. It's just that... I was hoping to learn all these amazing and cool things you show in your video but it just seems too overwhelming to know how to do all those things before getting into school. Where did you learn all these skills?
All the stuff that is in this portfolio was self-taught over a period of years. Don't be overwhelmed. I had the luxury of having a lot of good design content to draw upon from my failed startup. You probably won't need as much for your portfolio. They mainly want to see that you are creative and hard-working. You don't have to be super skilled before university. Include things like projects you made, your artwork, 3D models and stuff like that. I hope this helps

Schools be like : you wanna learn design ?
Show us you are already good at it so we can maintain good figures
😂
Literallly, like I’m going to learn design, if I already knew I wouldn’t go lmao
Exactly, I'm planning to do B.Des in 2022, and I apparently need a portfolio of my work. What work😭😂

Incredible videos man. Really motivational, even though i'm studying engineering at aut and not product design :P
ghj thanks man. Engineering, that's awesome! If is was more mathematically inclined I would have totally gone into engineering. What do you major in?
We just had a University Fair here in Dubai AND AUT HAD A BOOTH! WOOT WOOT!
No way! That's awesome!
im in dubai also, are you sure there is a AUT branch over here?
No sorry. AUT is just in New Zealand, but I think they had a booth at a university fair of there.
I'm glad you changed your hair. It looks much better on you.
How old are you? How did you have time to create these products?
Great job! Thank you for sharing.

Heya, Did you create your portfolio on a website and submitted it as a website link or did you use a word processing software and submit in a pdf?
I summited it as a PDF. It is up on the website now so you can look at it and get ideas for your own portfolio. :)

Why did you choose this major? Im considering it, and what are your advice and insights about this major?
I like it because it is the perfect balance between art and engineering. It is wonderfully creative while also being satisfyingly technical.
