  • Medical Device Design and Innovation, is a partnership between the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Yale School of Medicine, and Yale's Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. Steven Tommasini, PhD, and Daniel Wiznia, MD are teaching this senior level class through the lens of innovation within Orthopaedic Surgery.
The class is incorporating biomechanics and device design projects proposed and led by fellow Yale Orthopedics faculty. They are covering topics such as medical device product design, corporate research and development, the management of intellectual property, FDA/regulatory requirements, clinical trials, orthopedic device technologies, imaging technologies, implantable devices, materials science etc. They are having industry leaders and medical device inventors teach and challenge the students. The engineering students benefit from first hand experiences at Yale New Haven Hospital and the Orthopedics clinics.
