Under shadowing you said "Helped Dr _", "Conducted clinical research" and "Assisted in _". Don't you think adcoms would view this as neutral/unfavorable? They know that shadowing is a passive act, and you definitely shouldn't be helping in medical care/procedures as a shadow. If you actually are helping a physician or conducting research, then it should be listed under a different category rather than shadowing.
Thank you for your comment! I recently watched one of Dr. Gray's application renovation videos after posting this one, and he made the same suggestion. I have a 'how to find shadowing' videos in the works and will definitely make this distinction since I made this mistake on my app last year. But yes! To anyone applying now reading, you can consolidate your shadowing experiences together, but any additional work done with the physician should be listed as experience elsewhere. By separating these experiences, your hours should reflect as so!
you are an amazing writer! wow! Im applying this year and I keep getting stuck on the experience descriptions. While Dr. Gray's videos are really helpful, i think I've been focusing so much on telling a story that I only leave 1-2 sentences at the end to reflect, which when looking back, doesn't really say much about the impact i had. I actually have about 60% of the descriptions written, but i definitely am going to go back and edit.
Aw, thank you :-) Yeah, I feel like there's so much attention focused the personal statement that I didn't realize how much luv the work + activities needed too until I applied! Yessss, you have the hard work started - great foundation to revisit and strengthen! Best of luck this cycle 🥳
Nooo, not at all! My entries were definitely not looking so cute at the beginning haha. I'm sure you have amazing activities that showcase your story :-)
Thank you! essentially I can include my paid job that’s non medical for example being an appointment coordinator as long as I can target the core competencies the AAMC and my medical school is looking for from my experience there?
yes, exactly! not all entries have to be medical related. as long as you can talk about skills learned, meaningful interactions, etc. you're golden to include!
This is all super helpful, im so glad I came across your channel :) When entering your contact title and name, how did you separate the two? Should I put the department that the physician I shadowed worked in for the title?
Yay! I'm glad it's helpful, and thank you for stopping by :-) I believe their were 2 different slots to enter in name and title for 1 contact. At 7:42 of the vid, I included a screenshot of how I listed contact names/titles/departments for multiple shadowing experiences. I hope that helps! Also! I do want to note that if you did any clinical/research work with that doctor, it would not be considered shadowing. I made that mistake in my entry last year.
Hi! I put three clinically unrelated activities for my most meaningful activities. (Research, study abroad/internship, and teaching). How will adcoms view this? Should I remove one and put a clinical activity instead?
Hmm I don't know how adcom would view that since I don't have adcom insight, but if those 3 activities are truly your most meaningful, then it'd be best to write about those! I included a clinical experience since I'm more community service-based, but as long as your experiences are diverse (yours sound like they are), related to medicine (themes/qualities), and showcase your passions - they are good!
In my opinion, the medical school application is supposed to ultimately show who you are why you want to be a doctor. Those would be reflected by the experiences that you’ve gained to solidify that decision. So if you don’t have at least one clinical experience that would be considered most meaningful in your decision to become a doctor (which is the point of the application) I would ask myself why and reflect on that further
Heyo! I noticed that for honors and awards you didn't have any hours listed and only had a start date. Do you think we need to specify the duration of time over which we received specific awards and try to estimate an hour count for it (idek how we'd do the hour estimation..)? Also do you need to put a contact email for these? Thank you!!!
Hi Divya! This part stumped me too since I crammed so much in this section haha. I think I listed the most broad description/bare minimum to be allowed to input the entry. I listed '0' hours as a placeholder, but I'd call/email AMCAS to double check what's acceptable for your specific award! I heard the AMCAS team is pretty responsive. For my application, I wasn't stopped/asked about why I listed my work and activities as such. For contact (I had to write someone to be able to input my entry), I listed my Dean's name and a general UCLA # since it was moreso a placeholder than a legitimate contact. If your awards actually had an org/person grant it to you, that'd be the better contact to use!
Hi Fatimah! I listed all 15 activities I wanted to include and designated my most meaningful as the ones I could write about most. Central themes these activities shared were they either reaffirmed why I wanted to pursue medicine or taught me something about the type of doctor I want to be for future patients. I diversified my experience types, so I personally chose 1 clinical experience, 1 community service involvement that meant a lot to me, and 1 learning moment. A good rule of thumb is that you should be passionate enough about an involvement to easily use those additional 1325 characters!
Hi @Fatimah, Most students nowadays are struggling to balance their school and personal lives. This often causes students to get all burnt out and constantly stressed which leads to a more serious mental illness over time. Hi. So all the shadowing i have done under different doctors count as only one unit out of 15 in the work and activities section?

Aw thanks so much, Tevan! I'm wishing you the absolute best this cycle - you got this dude!!
Did you attend medical school exactly after 4 years in university?
