In this video come with me as I evaluate and fish 3 different beaches. I have produced this video in response to comments and requests from my first video on reading a beach. This video was filmed in July 2019 (Winter) on the South Coast of NSW.
I show you and explain why each fishing spot is chosen. You can the see the results when I fish.
We visit each beach at low tide so that I can clearly show you the beach structure, we then return at high tide to fish.
Each beach is only fished for 1 hour but there is plenty of action. If more time was spent at each location the catch would have been even bigger.
Learning how to read a beach effectively will boost your confidence and your catch will increase!
Beach fishing is such an enjoyable and safe thing to do. I know that this video will help you to achieve your beach fishing goals.
If you know any keen fishos, share this video with them!
Please leave any feedback or comments, this will help me to improve my instruction in future videos
Happy fishing! - Спорт

Appreciate ya work mate
Love the content mate! Thank you!
Ive never gone beach fishing but I am keen to start!
Could you please do a segment on What the easiest rig to cast is (for newbies)? And any tips going from the standard 7-9’ rod to a big 12’ beach setup.
Cheers
Hi Joe, I'm planning on doing some videos for newbies soon. Roger
Awesome video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
It's interesting to see that fishing isn't that different even though you are on the other side of the Earth from me.
Great info, honestly you are probably the best fisherman I've seen all those who claim they are experts on TV are really not informative. Keep up the great work. Also if your in vic any beaches or rock formations you recommend. Thanks
Hi Mahmood, thanks for your encouraging words, cheers Roger.
Good teaching video, especially emphasising low tide recons. I'm a dedicated yellowfin whiting enthusiast, but find gutters to have a low return. Granted if your looking for a varied catch or are targeting Jewies/sharks, gutters are the go. But what I have found that whiting seem to congregate along slowly rising flats with good fishing on the incoming tides. Perhaps they're after the same worms you gather at the lower tides. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy your explicit explanations as if you and I were on the beach together - teacher and student. "Wax on wax off"
Hi Alex,
Great to hear from you. I also don't like the deep water for Whiting, I like to fish the edges of gutters where food churned up by the waves can potentially be washed in. Often, as you would know, they are sniffing along the edge right at your feet. Interestingly though, my father had a mate named Sonny who would pick the deepest gutter in the middle of a beach and using a heavy sinker would cast his line out as far as he could. He only used beach worms and caught a lot of fish including all the normal species.
Roger
G'day Roger,
Any chance you could do a walk through on how you read the ocean to find the gutters, drains and holes? I'm colour blind and so the advice of, "Look for the darker patches of water" tends not to be that helpful. I've watched a few other videos which describe how deeper sections have less swell, but I find it difficult to distinguish between less swell due to a smaller sets of waves at a particular time in a particular place vs less swell due to it being a deeper section of water. Another vid like this but talking through what you're seeing and thinking when you look at the water would be wonderful.
Thanks for all the vids and awesome advice; best beach fishing channel out there.
You’re a legend mate keep the videos coming
Hi Uhh Bam, thanks for your encouragement. Roger
Awesome video as usual ,more of these please and maybe what size n type of rig ,hooks etc... your using would be great .yes you can see the setup but youngens wouldn't know what there called.good on ya mate for sharing ,nice touch with the sky view to. much love from s.a ox
Hi Michael, Thanks for your comments. I have a couple of videos coming up on rigs, baits etc which will have plenty of detail, regards Roger.
excellent!!!
love all your shows, atm in a long process of moving house ,can't wait to go fishing again.take care n much love
Awesome tips thank you
You are so welcome!
Love your videos. Even when you have experience, there is always something to pick up from top-notch fishermen like yourself. Just curious about 2 things: 1. What brand and type of knife do you use for general beach fishing (your green handled knife)? Good knives are now hard to come by and I use a Morakniv which is Swedish and holds a good edge. 2. What brand of wet weather jacket do you wear (I have been plagued by zipper issues even with yachting jackets which I wear when drummer fishing from the rocks)? Your responses to my questions will be greatly appreciated! Frank.
Thanks Roger, I'm still learning to piece together my own knowledge from your wisdom. I got a 65-cm Mulloway down Shoalhaven way with your Mulloway rig and a fresh squid head. Couldn't get a second on a salmon head though!
Hi Scott, That's great. More to come I hope .
Cool vid mate 👍
awesome video. thanks for sharing..!! greetings all the way from Sri lanka :)
Hi Angling Addicts, thanks for saying hello. Roger.
Cheers Mate!
I used to have a van in the park there , never did any good on jewies but bream , whiting , and massive salmon were common .
I don’t recommend swimming there as there have been a couple of drownings and i have seen some big sharks cruising through there .
I have fished most of the beaches from there right down to Narooma .
Thanks for the video Roger !
Hi Ian, there are some amazing beaches on the South Coast, such a beautiful area with plenty of fishing options. Did you have a van at Burrill? Roger.
Roger Osborne
Hi Roger,
Mine was at gateway just out of Ulladulla.
I learned a lot from your videos ..thanks ..from turks and Caicos islands
Happy to hear that! Thanks Sundar
Here in NZ we call those Salmon Kahawai which means strong swimmer.
Hi Kaikoura72, Yes they are strong swimmers, and really, they are pretty good to eat. I didn't know that Kahawai meant strong swimmer. Good name. Regards Roger
My Hubbie and I are learning so much from you, looking forward to your next upload
Question do you ever fish down Wollongong way? if so do you have a favourite beach.
Hi Janice, I live south of the Wollongong area near Ulladulla. I am not familiar with the Wollongong beaches although undoubtedly there would be some excellent beach fishing terrain. Regards Roger
Thanks for the video, I'm trying my luck the next three days...
Thanks Costa, all the best! Roger
Love it
Great video once again very informative mate , live whiting or freshly butterflied whiting also works great through summer months for mulloway , but they can be a hard sacrifice for bait also haha .
Hi, thanks Ryan. Whiting are delicious although there is something captivating about chasing the mighty Jewie.
What area do you fish? Roger
I’m from Yamba northern Nsw , we are very lucky we have excellent beach fishing at times , but like most places time & persistence is a big factor to learning to fish our beautiful beaches , Yamba has a great fishing culture commercially & recreationally .
Great videos man
Thanks for watching
Good on you Roger :-)
I am really enjoying learning from you, and am keen to put your experience into my practice !!
Cheers Ted … Avid Angler yet the Crap Catcher LOL
Cheers Ted, all the best with your practice! Roger
Thanks mate :-) I've got all the best of intentions and really try ha hah … yet it doesn't always seem to come together Roger.
It'll all work out OK though - Ted
I was at Greenwell point teaching kids fishing, saw a guy sit for 1 hr and he still wasn’t getting anywhere trying to bring I’m sure a shark
Great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Roger
hi, greetings from Portugal, is it possible make a video with severeal diferent beach, from the point of view from the fisherman, where to identify the gutter, holes, etc?, best regards, Carlos
Hey roger, love your work! What beaches on the Northern Beaches have you had most success?
Hi Matt, In recent years I have focused on fishing the beaches that are less popular mainly to avoid crowds.
All of the beaches produce fish.
Bungan is a great fishing beach, people don't like walking down and up the hill, I have caught plenty of fish there although once again it depends on the conditions/structure at the beach. If it looks crap there are plenty of other spots to choose from. Warriewood to Mona Vale is also a great spot. Many people tend to gravitate to Narrabeen which is a great beach but usually lots of people, Roger.
Tanks....
Have you ever traveled to asia and brought ur fishing rods? Any advice on how to transport ur rods on a plane?
Hi from South Africa. Next time when putting on a fish head go through both lips, stops the bait from spinning in the water and messing up your traces. Look at the few baits presentation and stuff that we do in SA (zoo look fishing and franna fishing on UA-cam), we have a few different techniques that I think should work in Australia
Hi South Africa,
Thank you for saying hello. I am sure that we can learn from each other. I have quite a few friends from South Africa, one guy who used to fish for Cob off the beach near Port Elisabeth. I will have a look at the channels that you have suggested.
Kind Regards
Roger Osborne
Enter, - south africa shore fishing and a variety of 🎣 yt channels shud come on,! 🎣
There are lots of south africans in Australia, many go fishing too! 🎣
Pls can you up your gear on salmon head bait casting to see what you keep losing fish species type..many THANKS
Absolutely love this session!!! Would jew bite head or slab bait of tailor?! Thanks
Hi Sergey, Jew would take both, although Tailor heads are a known big Jew bait, Roger.
Thank u leant something new
I would appreciate if you mentioned some location specially for beach worms 🙂
I'd like your opinion, or even a video on how moon phases affect beach fishing. My theory being, the best time is the 3-4 days leading up to a full moon.
Thanks Mal, Great suggestion!
@@RogerOsborneFishing so, would you do it?
Do u bait both hooks on your 2 hook leader. The sliding hook also?
Hi Roger just stumbled on your videos, fantastic help, i just used your killer rig for the first time, caught 2 flathead and both were on the second smaller hook, just have a question on reading the beaches, i really struggle, i'm fishing on the gold coast beaches, is it possible to find beaches with no gutters as i just cant seem to spot the gutters or differences
Hi Paul, try looking at low tide, it is easier to see the differences in water depth
Hi Roger Do you happen to have anything on pumping Squirt Worms?
You're a Legend mate. How do you get the plastic white pipe in the sand, that support the rod?
You have to push it in hard and wiggle it from side to side so that it goes down deep. It is fairly quick and easy.
How do read an estuary river for best fishing spots?
hi, great video, i live in melbourne and wonder if there is no good beaches for fishing, also is there beach worms in melbourne?
Hi Chufan, not sure if there are beach worms on the beaches around Melbourne. I know that the beach fishing around Torquay and Barwon Heads is OK.
Also Try the back beach at Gunnamatta, or travel down to kilkunda or beaches at cowes. All good for salmon.
❤helpful Thanks 😊❤.
You're welcome 😊
awesome video .. question 1 : I don't have a drone and I cant read the beach from a high place , what should I do? question 2 : if I don't have beach worms what do you recommend as a standard bait to start with ? and what about sardines? I cant wait for your next video
Hi Sergei,
I never use a drone when I go beach fishing and I didn't use it to choose the spots in my video. The drone was just to help people get a closer look at beach structure. Even when there is no high vantage point near a beach you can still easily read the beach structure and choose a spot to fish. In the most basic terms, where the waves break the water is shallow and where the waves do not break the water is deep. It is definitely easier to see the features at low tide.
Pilchards (Sardines) are a great bait for Bream, Tailor, Flathead, Salmon, Mulloway and Trevally.
Regards Roger
@@RogerOsborneFishing actually I am from the Mediterranean we may have different types of fish but anyway , thank you so much , you are the best.
Sergei, In Melbourne they catch small Snapper (I think they call them Pinkies), Flathead, Salmon and Gummy Sharks off the beach. Around Barwon Heads they catch Mulloway.
Hi Roger. What area you from mate? I live in the Illawarra, NSW . LOVE beach fishing but can't seem to read them properly.
Hi Chris, I live at Ulladulla, Roger.
Hi Roger...at high tide how could you see the gutter again ? Do you actually make a mark where it is during low tide ?
Hi Ben, yes I usually make a reference point at low tide for when I come back at high tide.
What about a feature-less beach where holes and gutters are not obvious that day, any tips or any spot is as good as any on those days?
Hi Matt,
On a featureless beach you don't need to cast very far. The fish will be patrolling the edge where the waves break looking for food. Roger
Hello, in what situation it needs to Cast far away to get good fish?
Many thanks
If the water is too shallow in front of you often you need to make a long cast to reach the edge of deeper water :)
Sir... please share the location ! It’s easy for us to go and fish 😊🎣 best of luck
Ulladulla South Coast.
Ho Roger.. Would like to know .. How do you clean and maintain the gear and what products you recommend .
Rozario, I will look at doing that in the near future.
Hi Roger, when casting a larger bait for Mullaway let’s say, do you use a sinker? Or no and let the tide take the bait out?
Hi John, I still use a sinker to aid casting and help hold bottom.
@@RogerOsborneFishing thanks Roger😊
Put a steel leader on and then throw those big chunks out . That way we can meet the monster
Hi Daniel, yes, if we do that we will need strong arms, Roger.
How to c big fish
How long is the rod you are using for casting? And how big the reel would you recommend for surfcasting? TIA
Hi Yob, the rods in this video are 12ft. The spinning reel is a Penn 950 SSm with 15k mono line. For small fish like Bream and Whiting I use a lighter outfit.
Thanks Rodge for the reply, sorry just new to fishing actually just got introduce by a friend now im hook. Coz im based here in Wellington if you catching bigger fish like a kahawai or snapper on the rocks what is the line size you recon? And also if you can recommend a rig set up for this type of fish would be appreciated. Thanks and more power on your channel! We planning to transfer there soon in Aus hope to meet you one day on the beach casting..😅😅
How to fishing with muddy water
Pls mate I like yr fishing tips but also will appreciate if u can at least break it down for us the locations for each spots pls
Tnks
Abi
Where are your circle hooks? Where I come from no one uses j hooks. Many places in the US j hooks are not allowed.
Hi Mark, I haven't really ventured in to circle hooks yet. I am sure that I will at some stage although I don't think that they are suitable for all applications. Roger
@@RogerOsborneFishing I was sceptical of circle hooks. I have been fishing for 60 years, including 16 years of beach, boat and bridge fishing in Grand Isle Louisiana. Once I started using circles and got used to them, I now use them exclusively. I have a extremely high hook up rate and seldom release a fish with a hook in there gut.
Hi I’m new to the channel.
Your content is awesome and I’ve learnt some new tips.
I’ve given you a triple whammy!
1. Subscribed
2. Gave you a 👍
3. Recommended you to a friend.
Can you do some vids on rock fishing, thx.
Awesome thank you! Dalbs. Rock fishing has been a life passion, I do a lot of it and have a massive amount of experience that I could teach on a variety of species, so definitely plan to do that, Roger
@@RogerOsborneFishing I deffinately will be looking forward to it.
