Agreed regarding Cold War vs. WWII AFVs; the rapid innovation in the period makes them, to me, more interesting, with the Cold War beginning with fundamentally WWII-era kit (T-54, Centurion, M46) and finishing with the M1, Chally and T-80. Sometimes, as in the T-64 series or the M1, that innovation gets enacapsulated in a single family of AFVs. (And by the way, although I realise it's likely impossible, the T-64B is at the top of my Inside the Hatch wishlist!)
The Dutch showing up might have been a sneaky deal to attract some UK representatives when they have their tankshow during Summer offensive at the Dutch national military museum in Soesterberg. Looks like they will be running a Challenger 1, so the trick might have worked.
The reason the Panther didn't do a victory round or as many laps around the arena was due to carb problems. They only ran on 3 of the 4 carburators as they couldn't get the 4th one fixed in time. Same reason as why they kept the ammount of run time to a minimum during Militracks.

So, why didn't 17 pounder end up on M4's with T20's descended turret? 76mm was fixing a lot of trouble, but Firefly was still superior AT tool, wasn't it?
For British purposes, apparently it didn't fit. Given that the 75mm didn't fit in it either, I can only assume that by happenstance the balance point on 17pr was such that it would work on the 75mm trunnion and not the 76mm. For American purposes, the gun came with way too many liabilities compared to what the 76mm was offering.

Don't they have blanks for tank cannons? Don't they have smoke launchers? The Memorial Day Civil War cannon display I went to in Michigan had six cannons from the civil war era and they fired off at least three rounds for each cannon. Theres needs to be a lot more going on rather than just tanks driving around
If they did that, surely something would break down in an awkward position. Enough stuff already breaks down. It's done that way it is to get enough stuff round as possible
Buy a used Sherman that has thousands of miles on it and drive it around shows and your back yard reliably. Buy a used panther with 100 miles and a bad transmission and prepare your wallet for the transmission exploding every 100 miles.
So, French fight against the Soviets, hand their asses to them, and then the Western Allies show up to save the day. A some point, Germans do stuff. Sounds very historical.
Having seen that I now understand what my friends meant about the re-enactment. It was really dreadful, no turret movement or shots from anyone much. People are still talking about not going back...
Why does the United States not have a "Functional" Tank Museum. At one time we had a small version at Fort Knox KY. Currently the vehicles are on Fort Benning, and not available for public viewing. Countless other vehicles and equipment are in storage at Anniston AL, left to slowly rot and decay. The proposed Armor museum to be built at Ft. A new museum is to be built on Fort Hood TX, and perhaps with sufficient public influence a true working US tank museum could be created. Its just a shame that a nation with such a rich military history and assets would lag so far behind in presenting, promoting and preserving Armored history.
Correct, there are some that have a small livery of working vehicles, but none are to the scale of a Bovington, Musée des Blindés, or the Dutch Militracks event. I should have been more clear in my definition of "Functional" , I meant working/driving vehicles. Imagine if the some of the armored vehicles in the Army's Center for Military History vast collection were restored back to working condition. Yep, and the French Panther had its flag logos clearly marked on the front, so that the Germans would know not to fire on a surrendering tank.
