Aloha Chris. Can you review the Okuma GLS custom Salmon rod? I find it to suit best for me for whipping compared to SST and GSP. It seems lighter and casts well compared to those two rods.

The design was to lighten a long Float Style rod for Salmon/Trout "Drift" fishing. This was the result. I've tried it. I also broke it. It broke on the cast. It broke because the design to taper it wasn't used but rather the sacrifice of a uniform rod strength from strong to weak to allow an even flow of rod bearing stress (in my opinion). I decided not to return it & junked it. Just didn't want another one. I didn't want my results of my review to go into showing what happen (in detail). I know i'm not the only one that had an issue. Okuma knows which is probably why not much is being done to promote the choices. Now i've broken quite a few rods here & there because overly fishing them is part of what i do. Recently a popular rod was having this issue as i kept cracking them yearly. But i also theorized why (won't say which one). I knew i was right because this prompted a trip to the factory by the head of the designing team to correct what i noticed the the issue. Upon his return it seemed i wasn't the only one who's noticed this and was sent a few to try. They passed with flying colors. I immediately could tell what was done by the reaction of the known stress points. When you cast a rod over a 1,000x a week to test it in the field you do notice things as i watch where it flexes & i observe how the guides are affected. When something does occur i show it on video as i'm constantly videoing every throw with extra batteries & sd cards as back-ups. I'm good at doing this as the manager of Don Coffee first hired me because i knew what to look for. Let me just say the newer GSP are much better rods now then they were years before. The older copper colored SST's were retired for a reason. The new carbon grey SST's are truly amazing since day1! Same blank as the GSP but different components. Even the travel rods were indestructable. Not a single guide issue. Not 1 insert ever popped out. Even on the longer models. For those on a budget i truly recommend the SST's. On one outing i tested 2 SST's at 10'6". Both the same ratings. The difference? One was a carbon handled 2 piecer while the other was a travel 4pc corker. I had pre-notions that the 4pc rod at that length would be noodly. Damn, i was wrong. Gladly wrong! They were both identical casting the same weighted jig in power, feel & distance. I even caught fish on both that felt the same. The SST's are much cheaper averaging under a hundred while the GSP averages twice as much. Same blanks used but different components. I tried them side by side. Both felt identical. Even did a quick vid on that.

I have the 10’6” travel SST. In terms of casting and handling fish I did not notice any difference from the 2 piece.
I must have the new GLS because I’ve used it for 2 years now whipping for Akule and using it also for Sabiki/Damashi for Akule. The 10’6” medium GLS has no problem bringing in 5-6 average sized akule up the jetty or pier. Thanks for your info Chris.

Hi Chris, it's the 10'6..... I saw 2 rods, one of them is medium light and medium action, but both specs show the lure rating up to 1/2 ounce....I want to know if the 10'6 MEDIUM action rod is 1/2 OR 1-1/2 ounce on the lure rating?

I use the SST-S-1062M-CGA which is up to 3/4oz but handles 1oz perfectly as well. There are "C" models at 1-1/2oz, 8oz & 16oz max which are insane but i don't use those. I can only comment on the current "S" models i'm currently using. @@ReyShibata

Hey Chris, about the GSP 10'6 medium light AND medium spinning rod, are lure rating same? Specs show up to 1/2 ounce for both .. let me know if the Medium 8-17 lb rod is only up to 1/2 ounce... I'm confused

My 9'9" GSP Med is rated up to 1oz. That's the one i use the most. Is that the one you're referring to? I do have 2 SST at 10'6", a regular 2pc & a travel rod.

@@ScubaChrisI have an Okuma Celilo 9’6” ML rated to 1/2oz that I can easily throw 1.5oz sinkers. I have an SST 8’6” MH rated to 1.5oz that I can throw at least 2oz. Do you think the 10’6” SST M can throw 2oz?

@@G3Steve I have a 10'6" also. Throwing 3/4 to 1oz is my max on it. I wouldn't do what you're suggesting. If you check my vids i've recently got a 9'9" SST that is H rated. Casts 1-3oz. That's the one you need. It's actually on a GREAT sale now on Amazon. Normally around $130. On sale now! ‎SST-S-992H-CGa. $87.28-
