  • I've Used SST Rods Off The PNW to Hawaii (Where It's Regarded As "Whipping" Rods)!
    Okuma has always produced some very notable rod lines over the years. Rockaways. SST's. Guide Select Pro's. PCH! They're one of the reasons Okuma has climbed the fishing equipment market to be recognized as the World's 3rd Largest Distributor of fishing rods & reels. Well, owning your own milling companies does help along with bringing in some of the best innovative minds out there.
    I'm gearing-up for a hopefully good summer of fishing in Hawaii. These rods i've received are dual purpose rods to my style of fishing. I can jig off the shorelines to casting Hammerbombs with grubs to chucking out a bait for Bonefish & Jacks when needed. They're lightweight rods but resilient & tough all between 9-10ft in roughly Med power. All rods will have 4K spinners with line that's either 15 or 20lb test.
    I love to hike into far places. Having a light weight 1 rod w/1-reel really helps. I need to cast weighted grubs to lures & jigs from the shoreline. When my arm is tired I like to catch a crab & toss it out while taking a break. I need equipment that handles my requirements. Okuma has provided me with equipment that does what i require & the MSRP isn't on the high side. Thanks Okuma.

      These are solid rods! I own so many in different lengths & strengths so i do know. In the GSP i love the 9'9". Just added another SST at 9'9" but rated 1/2-3oz more for MH to H jigging to plugging. But amazingly still sensitive enough for 30g jigs. Been using a 5K spinner on it for the lighter weight. A 6K would be a better fit due to the line capacity. So i just purchased a Revros5K that the line capacity is more of a 6K. Waiting for that to come in. Steelheads are not the easiest, you're right. Fast moving water with a lot of bends is perfect.

    You turned me on to those fishing butlers( many years ago now, I think). I love them. I have over a dozen pairs. The best thing I like about 'em, is that I can tighten an loosen then with one hand. They are also great to tie rods together in a tube for travel. Okuma does have good rods. My most recent purchase was a rockaway sp for light shoreline action. Great little whipping/light jerk bait rod. Probably gonna pick up one of those travel sst pretty soon too.

    I should try those fishing butlers. I’ve been using the electrician nonadhesive Velcro strips used for electrical wire organizing. It’s soft felt material so it hasn’t damaged any of my rods so far. But takes a bit of wrapping work to pack up my rods.

      They work! Charley's Fishing Supply on Oahu is where i purchased my first pair. Been using them ever since:)

    I’ve thought about sizing down from my surf rods to this style. I mainly use artificials and occasionally will spike my 10 foot rod into the sand. But even trying to haul a 10 foot rod around and casting it? Gets tiring. I don’t need a ton of weight on it. I’m in the east coast, targeting mainly drum, Striper, etc.. But I imagine this style rod can hold up to those species

      Always adapt your gear to your targeted species. Sounds like you need a good day pack?

    Hey Chris,… how’s it going bruh …?
    I’ve been using the neoprene rod wraps w/ a slot for guides and the neoprene cushions the rod so it doesn’t rub against itself when you’re carrying your rod(s)… and I slip a rod protector over the rod… Seen others put rubber bands to keep their rods together… I think over time … it gets warped … I like to keep my gear as pristine as possible 👍😎🤙

      You would love the Fishing Butlers! You apply the pressure & since it uses bungee it's not overly binding. I fish 3-5x a week like forever. None of my rods rub together or has signs of friction marks from using these for over 6yrs. I have over 100 rods & everyone is stored using these. From finesse to surf rods. Thanks for your responce:)

      These are my "go to" shore jigging & whipping rod line. When the director told me how many units they do yearly i almost fell over. The GSP & SST are the World's leaders in Salmon/Steelhead/Trout rods in the World. It's not because of advertising or staffers like me. These rods have earned that distinction in a competitive industry where everyone competes on the same level. Over the years these rods have earned their distinction by those braving the fast moving cold waters (and hungry bears). I picked-up my first 2 GSP in WA when i fished the Columbia. I brought them back here where i was whipping day & night with them. Brought in several large stingrays with them as well. Went night casting for Akule. Then i got 2 more when POP started carrying them. The cheaper alternative for a SST rod is the new SST "a" series. Much thinner high density blanks. I use both now. Basically what we use as high quality whipping rods can double as SST type rods. The closest being the Rockaways. I'll tell you honestly, once you use your first GSP there's no going back. I have several new units now. Going to get another. You can dunk for O'io & Papi'o with them as well. I even jig off the shore using them. They're THAT GOOD! And a recent improvement was made in the new 2023 models that i figured out on my own without the company telling me because to me it was that noticeable.I use these several times a week, every month to every year for 6yr. I know "the feel" of the blanks of this line even blindfolded.

      I just got the last of the originals when i did this. Solid rods! Mine are rated up to 3oz? Just used one of them today. The company gave me a buttload of these when i first started. They've been superseded by the Carbon models though i'm sure some dealers may still have them. Did you try a Google search?

    What size was the fishing butlers ?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  Рік тому +1

      I think 3-1/2in? It's the smallest size. My first ones were from Charley's Fishing Supply. Since then the company sponsors me and by then i had over 100 rods & badly needed a system to keep everything together. I still have my originals from Charley's & they're still going strong. When i do fish with others & they try these, they end up purchasing a bunch. So worth it. I use the longer sizes to tie them to my backpack or to keep 2 or 3 rigs together as 1pc(for that i use the 8/9in lengths).
