Filipino nurses have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus in the US. That’s because they make up an outsized portion of the nursing workforce. About one-third of all foreign-born nurses in the US are Filipino.
Since 1960, 150,000 Filipino nurses have come to work in the US. And that’s because over the past century the US built a pipeline that draws nurses from the Philippines every time it faces a shortage. This system began in the early 20th century when the US invaded and colonized the Philippines and lives on through today.

As an American surgeon who trained and practiced all across the United States, I can tell you that the Filipino nurses were the best, in and out of the operating room. They are knowledgeable, skillful, efficient, and very meticulous. Whenever I saw Filipino nurses around me, I knew my patients were in good hands. This is no exaggeration. I had no knowledge of such differences before being exposed and seeing for myself, time after time, hospital after hospital, state after state.
I agree with you doc.I' m a nurse assistant every time I worked with a Philippines nurse i' m happy because we will work together.

Well from what my filipina step mother did, a lot of them also need the money. Most of the Philippines lives in poverty. The ability to be able to go to the US and get a salary higher than the Philippine's nurses salaries is better to help their families. They send money back home to help their families.
Also you can't be hating on the Filipino nurses since the united states has a shortage of doctors and nurses due to our high student debt needed to pay for both college and med school. Not to mention residency by the time you've done all that you're half a million dollars into debt.

@@mmrgratitudes no problem, an average med school education is about 278,455 dollars for 4 years. Add that onto an average of 26,290 a year for an out of state college. Plus medical school application entry fees, USMLE tests which cost 1200 dollars, the prep course materials, the books, room and board. This is only basic level doctors, surgical doctors need to take surgical residency on top of REGULAR recidency and then if they are like specialty surgeon like a brain surgeon. Extra neuro residency, with all these student loans, a bank doesn't want to give you a house loan which is a problem because by the time you are done with all that school. You can be anywhere from 28-32 years old, the time in your life when you want to buy a home. Then you need to rent which isn't investing into your future, you might want to have kids because its that age. So you have to take time off which leaves debt that still needs to be paided. It's a mess.
in other words, OFWs are slaves of the Philippine government's incompetence.

Just4Kixs Actually people going to nursing school has increased dramatically, but thousands of students are being waitlisted. I think a fraction of the shortage is coming from that. Not to mention, many hospitals are phasing out or requiring their nurses to get their BSN’s.

its not about the foreigners its about companies being to cheap to raise wages . if no immigrants came in to work for cheap these companies would be forced to raise wages . just look at the crises when mexican day laborers were deported and these companies had to raise wages you had the mexicans making 7 dollars a hour to pick fruit now its 15 or 16 a hour just because of the shortages . same thing is happening with covid with every one making more on uneployment all these fast food chains raised wages to close to 15 a hour now . big business is the cause of it but when the immigrants stop coming you see wages go up . so its either raises wages by law or limit immigration
My best friend is a registered nurse but eventually switched to a different profession because of the low salary. But when the pandemic hit, she said, “if called, we (not practicing nurses) can drop everything and serve and be in the frontlines again...if only the government treated us well.” It broke my heart to hear that.

I'm in my adulthood and I have thought of this many times before. Not just me but my friends too. Not because of money, it's mainly because of the current mindset of Filipinos that are starting to become toxic as time goes by. Maybe I am just growing up and seeing more of everything. There are certain industries that are not supported here in the Philippines that are very much supported and entertained outside the country.
The interpretation of such statement depends on the context. If you're a pessimist, you'll take this negatively of course. But for me, there's nothing wrong or sad in such statement

Ofcourse who would settle for a 350-500 peso per day pay compared to 10k peso a day in other country. Try to be a nurse in the Philippines and you will understand the exploitation. 💩

Jeff Duque The China Part is true though. Electrical grid companies have most of their shares from Chinese companies. The Chinese have also taken the Spratly Islands near the Philippines and even threatened fishermen in the area. Duterte just let them take it and didn’t even bother to try and keep them back.

When i went to a filipino hospital (bc i broke my leg) even tho the place was very busy ,the nurses were so friendly and caring.. while i was waiting for my x-ray a random nurse looked at me and ask if i want an ice pack,before i could answer he ran and got an ice pack for my leg.. and the nurse that was pushing my wheelchair was very jolly as he push my wheel chair.. and the dr.s too...basically a hospital full of filipino rocks! When my dad was hospitalized and was at his last few weeks..even tho none of his family was able to come to the hospital..his landlord whos a filipina nurse was there until he took his last breath,she cried so hard looking at my dads situation..she took her time to see my dad even tho he is not her patient and she has work...

Filipino nurses are universally regarded as some of the best nurses around, and although we're not supposed to be stereotyping cultural groups, I've found very few exceptions to this rule in 12 years of being a doctor. Talking to my 🇵🇭 colleagues this week they are really scared about what is going on back home. I've not known them to be this worried. Just like in the US, the UK owes Filipino nurses an enormous debt, the NHS would've collapsed without them.

The problematic thing, though, in my opinion that is indicative of a greater problem from my perspective, is that the Filipino nurse training is like 1 year or 18 months, or at least it was ~a decade or so when I trained. In NZ, it's 3 years, plus another 1 or 2 with the equiv of doctoring registrar integration. Filipino nurses are lured in with promised jobs here, and then come and either only qualify as nurising assistants, or have to re-train, which doesn't seem fair to me. I should add that all the best phlebotomists I've know have always been Filipinos! Our nursing system is under strain like almost all nations, and we need to do better to support our immigrant workers, especially our Fillipino nurses.

I work in a nursing home in NYC and our filipino nurses stand out for their work ethics, Thank you for all your hard work and sacrifice.
My patient told me , " Filipinos are the best nurses in the world!" I was humbled ... and proud!!! Patients can feel the genuine compassion and dedication of a Filipino Nurse!!..

@@joshvente6898 I grew up in both countries, lucky may not be the right word, but I'm talking about education, not the country's problems. But still it is a blessing that it's cheaper. My brother is suffering with the loans he has (took up nursing in the US, extremely expensive). Meanwhile my other brother who took up a medical degree in the Philippines, is living a great life in the US since he has no debts to pay.
@@beanzor Good Education in the Philippines is really cheap compared to the US. You can finish college in less than $5k with no debt. There's no compromise in learning also, except for the fact that everything is in a different language. I doubt it would be even that hard because English is an official national language in that country.
I have worked with Filipino doctors and nurses. They are great, warm, kind, and very efficient. Love the filipinos, I am Mexican-American and have much in common with their culture.
I’m American and I never knew about this. Thank you Vox for sharing their stories! I’m sure it’s possible that my hometown just isn’t home to big a Filipino nursing community, but I’ve never seen it in media or news either. Hopefully that changes soon!

@@roonilwazlib4433 The money is going to executive pay, insurance companies, and shareholders instead of the hospitals and the workers. That's the problem.
That's definitely not how salaries actually work. I hate to tell you that 7th grade lied to you, but it did. Employers often decrease salaries if there is a surplus, but they don't often increase in a similar way if there is a scarcity. Especially in medicine. The medical specialities for doctors that are the most scarce are also the least paying.
There is no shortage, it's a lie to keep wages down, just like many other professional areas
@@friedrice4015 Wrong, supply and demand is not wrong. Wages are determined by a combination of factors, reimbursement from insurance companies and government programs is the most important.
After 20 years of working with wonderfully skilled and talented Filipino nurses, I did not know their touching and difficult back story until now. Thank you Vox.
Let me tell you! I am so thankful to Filipino nurses! They are such hard workers and have such good etiquettes. They always try not to show discomfort and negative emotions on their faces. I grew up in KSA and one of the things I loved about the hospitals there, was how helpful Filipino nurses are. My sister has a medical condition so we would often visit the hospital, and the nurses who had become familiar with us treated us extra specially it felt so nice!
This made me cry. My mom being a foreign born nurse, but Mexican always tells me abt the Filipino nurses that work so hard and are quiet and just stick to doing their job. She admires their work ethic and how they put their heart and soul into nursing. Very amazing documentary ❤️

In the Philippines, nurses have to pay the hospitals to get training. Midwifery offers more opportunities than Nursing in the Philippines. Many Nurses end up as call center representatives.

Here in the Philippines, people look up to you if you're a nurse working in the US, UK or anywhere abroad. But they laugh and look down at nurses who have stayed here in the Philippines, thinking that they're missing their chance of getting a better life. It's sad. There's a lot that the Philippine government needs to fix.

In the early 1990s, I had the good fortune to work with very skilled, kind and hard-working Filipina Nurses. I was told that they had been recruited in the 1980s, to fill the nursing shortage in the U.S. I'm glad they remained here, I learned so much from them.
When i had covid last year 2 amazing chief filipina nurses took charge of my care in the ICU alongside wonderful Indian nurses too. Could never have made it without them. At present im in contact with them and even invited them at our family restaurant as a sign of gratitude. I plan to be in touch with them as long as possible. I call them Aunties. Bless their hearts and health.

Since when the term frontliner is ONLY used in military? In the Philippines we call them frontliners since they are ones in the forefront who are battling the spread of viruses here. We consider them heroes 'cause they put their health in compromise, taking the risk just to help other Filipinos who are infected.

At work, I being expose to the philippine culture, I loved their food, I am learning their language on top of my Spanish and English. I learned a lot from them and when I was a new nurse they give me lots of support. America owns a lot to the phillipine nurses. We have lots of things in common with mexicans.

Nursing is a solution to escape from poverty here in the Philippines and migrate to USA.
Filipino nurses are all over the world. Have to pass nursing board tests which are different in each country. Best thing is to marry a nurse with a purse.

What an informative video. My husband was an R.N. and worked with countless nurses from the Philippines. He actually picked up quite a bit of Tagalog. The irony is that in the late 70s, American hospitals were looking for R.N.s abroad and he left Ontario to come and work in California.

As a Filipino, it just breaks me to see how nurses and health workers here have low salaries, which is why I understand why many of them leave and work in other countries. They are so underappreciated here

Let them go overseas. The only time I want them back is when the government starts to take notice of their problems and give them better wages. Only then will we welcome them home.

I have worked with Filipino nurses for over 25 years. They are excellent, helpful committed professionals and I have loved my years of working a long side so many courageous warm and friendly nurses. They have made us all better workers.

I have worked with many Filipino nurses and all I have to say is that they are the nicest and most prepared nurses I have worked with, I am so very thankful for them and all nurses and healthcare workers that I work with 😊❤️
If any of them invite you to eat with them at a home party or something (When times get safer, of course! Not now, but later) you should take it! I have heard nothing but praise from friends and coworkers who give Filipino cuisine a try! It's always easy to win people over with lechon, it's basically BBQ pork but with really crispy skin, it's amazing!

I think the US is already paying the Filipino nurses fair salary. So is the Philippines. Unfortunately for the Philippines, nurses are paid more outside of the Philippines. That is the reason why nurses work abroad. The salary is always higher abroad. Why won't the Philippines increase the salary of the nurses then? It is just a matter of law of supply and demand. There are so many nurses in the Philippines so the nurse's salary is not increasing much. Unfortunate for the nurses.

When I was planning my career path months ago, I told my mom that I wanted to be a nurse but she told me no since nurses get paid really bad here in the Philippines and she doesn't want me to go overseas to work. I suggested to be a doctor since I really want to work in the medical field but she was still doubtful as medical professionals here are underpaid and overworked. I hope the working conditions for this field can be improved soon, it's sad to see an important profession being exploited.
Maybe you can convince her, Move to America and take her with you if that's possible
The mid-life crisis in the philippines for jobs are nursing, especially when you cant decide what to take for college. It is a bit funny.
That’s the case a few years ago. I’d say for people my age, it’s become accountancy. I know because i myself am taking it up lol. It’s just not felt that much because the demand for accountants is high. Let’s see when oversupply happens.

I can relate, my mom used to study business, but then regret it and just went to study again in nursing, even now she's working as a nurse at the age of 44, and now im kinda following her footsteps here coz i cant make up my mind on what college course to take other than medicine.

This is a very bad generalization. I have friends from the Philippines in Munich and they are the most lovely people and in germany, i can confirm they are treated better as workers’ right here in EU and particularly in Germany are better protected than the one in USA

@@Fun-rf9vs culture also plays a big part on that, sir. If you were raised in a tight-knitted large family like most Filipinos are, you'd be more caring and tolerating. Also, unlike most Americans, we don't send our old to retirement homes. We care for them until their last breath. Which is kind of expected since most retirement homes aren't in good condition and aren't paid much attention to by the government.

my lola was nurse for many years. mind you she was born in 1946. in the philippines she attended nursing school, and then became a nurse in the states after moving when my mom was born. my lola stopped working as a nurse maybe around the time i was born, 2006. she turns 76 years old in january, but it's amazing to realize she's dedicated so many years to nursing. she's created many opportunities for herself, moving to the US after 1971. it's amazing to hear her stories, since my mom was pretty much raised in the states and hasn't been back since she was born. i've never gone as well; i don't know any tagalog and i'm mixed (black-filipina) so i don't have much of a connection with other family members. but i'd love to go to her hometown tuguegarao, and learn everything i can.
