Dude ! I've been listening to alot of youtube, and you are truely an inspiration.. I'm taking up the sax again after a brief 22 year break... you playing is amazing, love your tone .. well done :)
Good job. Really liked it. Pitch, intonation/articulation all sounded good to me. well done. Wish I had known about our Brazilian friends last week when I was in Rio looking for jazz venues. David Evans, Sri Lanka.
Wow, Matthew! Great! Many compliments! For all those not in confidence with sax music: in all over the saxophone world, "Mr. G" is for Stan Getz ("The Sound") and no one other. (yeah,,Kenny G is a good and famous player, but...Stan is above him several miles!) ;)
John Coltrane is reported as saying "We'd all sound like Getz if we could". Of course Ben Webster sounds great and Coleman Hawkins is "OK" too, but Getz tone is polished gold.
Sir Matthew pls. come to NorCal and play. Either Yoshi's in SF or Oakland and I'll come and see you. Your sax playing is really exceptional. Like I said, I'm a Stan Getz fan but you're quite as good.
For the record, because of the likes of Matthew and jazzsaxtenor on UA-cam, Jamie Abersold books and Hal Leonard books have made sales from me. These being sales that they would not have made otherwise. The reason being that I was not aware of their products until Matthew and jazzsaxtenor alerted me to their existance. A big thumbs up to Abersold and Hal Leonard for their enlightened stance. Thumbs down for Warner Bros for their misguided one.
It helps to have similar mouthpiece and reed as Getz BUT the sound if from you. Play for a mellow tone if that is wanted, it is all in the head! Apparently : )
Very nice as usual Matthew...very nice indeed. Quite fancy doing some clips myself on my Alto, but was wondering about copyright on the backing tracks?? Are the publishers like Abersold etc. not bothered about their tracks being copied??
BTW--- hes not a UA-cam partner (I don't think at least) so he is gaining no funds from the production of this video. Anyone can say that they made the backing track themselves with other players. Granted there would probably be subtle differences in playing styles. Beyond that... he bought the book, so for his own personal use, he is allowed to use the backing track. Don't be a tattletale (not that you would) DouglasThomas"I put my whole name in my UA-cam Account" Dorset.
WHAT MIKE ARE YOU USING AND ALSO YOUR MOUTHPIECE AND TIP OPENING OR MODEL NUMBER . GREAT SOUND VERY GETZY AND LOVELY INTERNATION LETS HAVE MORE MATHEW Graham
Matthew, plagiarism is a form of flattery, and I see nothing wrong with patterning a style after a well known musician. I like Tex Beneke's style and sometimes in a standards jazz piece I'll throw in the first two bars of a bugle call. I like the sound of tenor sax from your recording set up with just the right amount of effects added in.
Hey, Love your bossa tunes the most! Just a quick question, do you test out your mouthpieces before you buy them? It seems the only way for me to get the better ones are to purchase them online. . . Regards, Kim
@crazydaisydoo hey I am buying a saxaphone (yamaha, yts-23) is this a good model to start with? Plus, what tips can you give me to improve rapidly in playing. I am a late start at 26 yeard old trying to play.
Hi! Great job with a real unique sound! Is this a Abersold or Leonhard Playalong? Which Issue? And which tenor-sax do you play? thanks for the wonderful song!
Okay...been comparing your approach/style to Stan Getz and a few others...but I think your approach to playing is approaching one of my favorite guys...Harry Allen. Take a listen to this song and see if you don't agree...search for "Harry Allen" on UA-cam and listen to "Chelsea Bridge". Keep adding your recordings...VERY enjoyable!!
@SaxInThaCity Your response flags up the whole reason I was asking about copyright in the first place, and anyone who is planning to use backing tracks on here should know this before they do it. The fact that Matt's not making any money from it doesn't matter.... buying the book gives you no rights to make ANY kind of copy...let alone put it on youtube for all to enjoy...that is a breach of copyright...I doubt they would sue...but I wouldn't fancy the legal bill if they did. Re..Warner Bros
Kumar, thank you for your observations, but please don't SHOUT at us. I don't always sound like Getz, this was a bit of an homage to him, and if you had read the description you would have seen that. I took the time to listen to your "all of me" on youtube. You gave me some, now I'm going to give you some advice; The tone is big and bold but your playing... it's just melody, no improvisation. Listen to the version I did with guitarist and compare, use the chord tones. I'm mostly self taught too.
Kumar, if you search for "all of me" and "sven klang" you will find my version. Please don't be too proud of not studying music, if you want to be a really good improviser, you HAVE to take the time to study chord tones and some scales. You might be OK on a few tunes without, but you are not going to survive playing out like I did last night doing 20 jazz standards without some knowledge.
I just cant understand why any one would want to copy some body's style and tone THE PLAYING IS QUITE GOOD BUT YOU CAN FEEL THAT HE IS LABOURING TO FOLLOW STAN GETZ ..YOU SHOULD DEVELOP YOUR OWN TONE AND STYLE I PLAY SAX BUT NEVER STUDIED MUSIC OR TOOK ANY LESSONS .every thing is by ear. I HAVE MY OWN STYLE AND TONE .go to utube and type KUMAR MOLLIGODA AND YOU CAN LISTEN TO TWO OF MY TRACKS .Then you will realise what I am talking about
I did. You obviously don't copy anyone great because you haven't learned jazz phrasing and articulation beyond high school band level. You've got nerve criticizing a musician like Matthew who is light years beyond your playing style.
Superb still viewing this is October 2020 anybody else out there love this sax player --- superb ---#saxocoustic_channel
Tonal Quality : 15 marks out of 10! Simply brilliant!!! The best I have heard.
I can not believe how long ago you did this Matthew, still timless. Wonderful.

John Coltrane was one of the humblest men on our planet he would even tell his pupils your greater than I am play.

This is how a tenor sax should be played! Lovely tone and expression. Super playing I can listen to your music all day.

Dude ! I've been listening to alot of youtube, and you are truely an inspiration.. I'm taking up the sax again after a brief 22 year break... you playing is amazing, love your tone .. well done :)

Wish I had known about our Brazilian friends last week when I was in Rio looking for jazz venues. David Evans, Sri Lanka.

Wow, Matthew! Great! Many compliments!

Well said Mathew!! And who would'nt want to sound like Getz if they could??
Sounds really nice Matthew, have the same backing track, working on it.
Great Job on the song there! :)
I remember the Tijuana Brass, great musicians
John Coltrane is reported as saying "We'd all sound like Getz if we could". Of course Ben Webster sounds great and Coleman Hawkins is "OK" too, but Getz tone is polished gold.

Nice
you're wild !
How do you play with so much "Getz-like" tone? You must have a special MPC/reed setup, yes? ...... Tell me, tell me, tell me, please.
Ole Flogger that's called "your sound". Work on it, make your's... or believe it's all gear and fail.
It helps to have similar mouthpiece and reed as Getz BUT the sound if from you. Play for a mellow tone if that is wanted, it is all in the head! Apparently : )

Hi Matthew!
This is a very unique/"modern" version of Desafinado. It is neither an imitation of Kenny nor of Stan "G" ;-)
Hey,

Have you done 'Triste' Matt? If not could you do a cover?
I'd pay money to see you in person.
@crazydaisydoo hey I am buying a saxaphone (yamaha, yts-23) is this a good model to start with? Plus, what tips can you give me to improve rapidly in playing. I am a late start at 26 yeard old trying to play.
Great playing! Do you happen to have a sheet for this?
stan lives....
I loved your version & Kumar shouldn't be throwing stones in his glasshouse. His "All of Me" sounded a bit Karaoke to me.
Hi! Great job with a real unique sound! Is this a Abersold or Leonhard Playalong? Which Issue? And which tenor-sax do you play? thanks for the wonderful song!
can you provide the Musical letters for it ?!
Great tune! What sax are you playing? very consistent tone... congrats!
low tones are hard to steady. great pacing and mid-tone for this tune
Okay...been comparing your approach/style to Stan Getz and a few others...but I think your approach to playing is approaching one of my favorite guys...Harry Allen. yes thats good i want d tone quality,i use martin tenor sax and berg larsen 110-1 mouthpiece, not just so similar
@crazydaisydoo
Obvious for me, who it is.

Enfin un commentaire de bon sens!....
what mouthpiece you use man??? hey would you provide me with a copy of the notes???
thanks
Nice Matt, a bit heavy on the reverb 😱 doesn't go with the playback.

Can you tell us the SETTING of your mouth piece, leed, and sax?
I hear a lot of Stan Getz in your sound.
Now I get influenced by you instead :D
I thought the 'g' word was kenny g lol
Way better than Kenny G... way better.
