From 76 until 2016, every Metal band I saw scowled and growled and made gnarly faces during solos. Then I discovered the female and female-led bands of Japan - Nemophila, Lovvebites, Asterism, Babymetal, Hanabie, etc, etc and suddenly the music was world class but there was smiles and joy all round. Haven't looked West since...apart from The Warning.
This is just my personal opinion. Nemophila is so amazing live and their solos tend to be extended a little so I simply love their live performances. Perhaps they are not extended, but I’m too entranced to notice. Their music videos are always top shelf and worth checking out. Choose either one and I will be here to watch it. I completely understand your comment about angry appearance versus ALL of these smiling musicians. I grew up listening to the genre, but couldn’t be happier watching these young women just have fun. I love the genre, but they take it to a new level. Thanks for your help. ❤️🌸
Stay with the live versions. The live drops the past 6 months take every song to a whole other level. if you want to hear her scream Zen live is going to hit you just like it me.
Hey Man....I am so jealous after seeing your travel vlog !!!!!!! What great experience .....I discovered this band about 6 months ago while being a huge Band Maid fan was being discussed in the comments. I was not a metal fan and could not get passed the vocalist vibrato in Lovebites.....but after hearing Nemophila they just blew me away. Mayu's vocals are out of this world.....Tamu's drumming are an incredible blend of speed and power and her smile is infectious !!!!!! And after see DragonForce's guitarist Herman LI's interview with Saki....I can honest say Im in love !!!!!! LoL. Band maid still has my heart.....but NEMOPHILA is by far the COOLIST band out there !!!!!!!!
I actually love how the camera cuts right to Haraguchi-san's broad smile as she chants "HATE". And I do get that a lot of bands have that angry stage persona, for some songs/types of metal it works really well, but seriously, you don't have to look like you'd rather be somewhere else all the time XD
That's what I find with most of these Japanese band like Nemophila, Band Maid, Lovebites, Aldious, their MVs are good but their live performances are just so awesome. All of them have great stage presence and all are having a great time playing and smiling and engaging with the audience. Seen Nemophila and Band Maid when they came to the US. Hoping Lovebites announces more dates and cities when they come here next year for that festival in Atlanta.
Her vibrato is so interesting. If I had to guess, I'd say she probably grew up listening and signing traditional Enka. Seems to be a lot of vibrato in that style or at least what I've heard.

Good call. Mayu has a couple of different vibratos and that song is a great showcase especially on one of the high-note moments.
