Only heard this for the first time today, 12/10/24, I was in a restaurant, it was playing in the background....I was saying "What's he singing....come down from the mountain Katie Daly lol"....I've played it a few times now this evening, tis catchy & funny tbf innit ........,✌️👍😉😁
Love the spirit and mood of this tune; perserving the old tunes is what we need to do more of! Look how happy everyone is! Need to learn to appreciate what everyone has to offer!! Great Job, Dessie!!
Perfection personified by whole crew, I've never seen musicans have such fun and not be afraid to show it. Congrats 1 and all. P.S. when I was a child n west of Ireland my father used 2 sing this n our pub all the time. Dessie brings back gr8 memories of a long bygone age of sweet innocence. Thnx Sharon and Dessie
dessie is a treasure. I've always loved that wobble. his fiddling is delightful. It must be a mark of performing with him- I have never seen nor heard recorded music of his in which the musicians were not having a blast!
Love this. My name is Katie Daly from the USA. My birth name is Kathleen Bergin Daly. Katie for short. Thank you Billy Murphy for turning me on to this wonderful song. 💚🍀
Just had an old fella come into work (in a music shop) looking for this music ... luckily I was able to learn the music from this and put it wit the words for him. From one bass player to the the bass player on this - thanks for making it clear what the chord changes were :)
I recently heard this song sung at an old time jam in Appalachia, and that was the first time I understood all the words. The words describe a moonshiner named Kay Daly who came to America, and that puzzled me -- I was surprised a rousing performance in Ireland would include an American song. Then I discovered some info saying the 1962 version of this tune was based on an old Irish drinking song (see pasted info below). Does anyone know which version Dessie O'Halloran is singing? Paul “Moon” Mullins (a one-time fiddler for the Stanley Brothers) wrote this song in 1962. It is credited to him at BMI under the name William J. Mullins for the title “Katie Daley”. The song was based on the old Irish drinking song “Come Down the Mountain Katie Daley” that his wife found in a songbook. (Tombstone, Arizona public records show a Katie Daley married Frank Heban 30 August 1882.) Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys released this version of the song on a 45 rpm single for Rebel Recording Company in 1971 and for their 1971 Rebel Recording Company album Something Old Something New and Some of Katy’s Mountain Dew (Rebel Records reissued it for the 1991 Ralph Stanley album Bound To Ride and for the 1995 box set Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys: 1971-1973; and Audium Entertainment also reissued the song for the 2002 album The Very Best of Ralph Stanley).
Interesting. Thanks for the info. American Appalachian Country Music is originally Irish & Scotch-Irish. PS The Highland Scots migrated from Ireland into Scotland starting in the 7th & 8th Centuries. Back then the Irish were called "Scotti".
I thought I'd heard the best version of this song done in the American bluegrass style, but this version beats it six ways to Sundays. Love the minor chord changes.
The best version I heard of this song was by Eamon O' Shea decades ago on RTE Irish national radio's "The Walton Programme", a catchphrase from it was "If you feel like singing do sing an Irish song". Foster and Allen also do a good version of it.
What? Dessie seemed drunk? An Irishman singing about mountain dew, and sober? Probably the whole crew had partaken of a few drops before, during, and after the concert. Who cares? They all played and sang fine. Give the guy a break, he's a senior citizen. I doubt if I could sing half that good when I'm his age. At least they weren't wiped out on drugs like a lot of the acts here in the states. I'll take White Mule over cocaine anyday. RIP Popcorn Sutton.
You speak like you've never heard dessie b4. This is his inimitable style that made him what he is. Just like christie hennessy, there'll never be another. and they dont come any bogger than dessie O
Absolutely brilliant is the right comment..... exept for one thing, Dessie O'Halloran may have been brilliant in days gone by, but he sounded drunk in this performance. He can certainly play the fiddle tho', but should leave the singing to the rest of the team, they were great. Mike Denver's version is terrific.
If you think Dessie has a good voice, fine, that's your opinion and it seems that many folk agree with you but I still think he just sounds like a drunk!! As I say, all others in the performance sound great!
This would have been the best version of Katy Daley that I've heard, if it hadn't been for the drunk singing and spoiling it. He should have kept to the fiddle, he was good on that!!
this is another terrible song from Dessie o' Halloran. if he is supposed to be a good singer' then it is the end of the road for talent. the backing band probably know that he can't sing' but they are encouraging him.
Rip dessie he help me out in London one time.

They're all havin' a good time. He's not an artist I'd be willin' to pay for the performance - just so....:D
To Bob Coltrane Kenneddy up Dixie and God save Ireland
Pink blouse, white shorts = Super hot!!
Nice choon, but ah dinnae hae a scooby wit the auld gadgie's sayin.

Some of these singers are like boxers, they don't know when to retire!!! If you don't think this sounds bad, you are tone deaf.
Its the character behind the voice that makes it. I'm sure its within's beyonce's vocal range but sure she'd sound cat singing it
Thank heavens for tone deafness. Bet you're tone deaf.
