Just an FYI, please don't stop telling the prices of things, it's always so interesting what other countries charge for stuff compared to our own country
I would say that you are frugal, not cheap. You spend money when you need to and don't when you don't have to, as far as I've seen. Keep up the great videos, thanks a bunch.
Every time i see one of your videos with issues with the autopilot it makes me more motivated to make a video about my custom autopilot i made with a flight controller. Much quieter, faster, cheaper, and repairable! Great video as always!
Thank you Sam for sharing the info on costs for marinas, food and entry/exit fees. Those of us who cruise very much appreciate the information. Most cruisers are budget minded. 🤗 ⛵ ☀️
Hi Sam, I’m from Croatia, if you got to Hvar, see if you could anchor in Stari Grad, it cheaper. When you leave Hvar if you get a chance stop at island of Brac and anchorage in Milne is beautiful. For food if you like ground beef look for “chavapchichi” delicious! Desert look for burick a pastry filled with cheese or meat.
Malo = small, ...More = sea. Visit Split, Zadar, Krk, start with Baska, then Crikvenica (for a good night sleep in calm waters), Opatija, and work your way around the Istrian peninsula on your way to Venice. Lots of great stuff to see, but probably quite cold and quiet in January. Enjoy!
Keep the prices coming. It’s part of the reality of making this adventure work and it helps those of us who would are planning our own adventure. Sail-on!
Sam, thanks for sharing your self with all of us. Pure inspiration, watching is instructional reference. for dreams of the future. May you be blessed and always safe through the tough ones!
I enjoy hearing about the cost of things even though I'm 75 and don't anticipate making the trip...AGAIN. We drove through that area in '86. Zadar was the only place we found a sandy beach, aside from the islands. I'm glad you discovered burek. Not sure of the spelling, but it's pronounced "BOO-deck." Yummy stuff.
Keep mentioning prices. Cheap? Of course that’s your BRAND. You have sailed farther with shadier vessels than anyone on UA-cam. My 20k passage miles give me perspective. You have taught me so much about how little one really needs to cross oceans. Not since Larry & Lin Pardy. You do frighten me at times Sam. Do you have a legit life raft? I think I know the answer. I envy the experience you have that prompts you to sum up passing on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coats and Elephiti Islands, “I have seen these kinds of places so many times, I don’t need to stop”. After 3 chartering those waters I feel I could never get enough of that coast, that clear clean water and the food from the little family restaurant that populates every pretty cove.
I would think many people probably requested this, but I feel it would be really nice if you told the date at the start of the video, or perhaps in the description below. I've been to croatia many times, and it was never that empty so I'm wondering what date were you there.
After seeing this area, I'd like to visit there sometime. The towns have a certain charm and the water is beautiful. Thanks for posting and hope you're enjoying it!
Agree, ALWAYS appreciate you sharing the cost of ANYTHING like slips, peppers, beers, all of it - so awesome you chose to go up the Adriatic, looks like such an adventure - BTW we are rocking the same hair right now lol - safe travels man
Been watching a lot of airplane crash debrief videos and this one with the autopilot biting the dust scared the hell out of me, great thing this is a ship autopilot haha glad you are ok, thanks for sharing!
Love your videos Sam! You should check out Pelagic autopilots. Super reliable since the electronics are mounted below deck.. just the actuator on deck. Great customer service too. Keep making great videos!
Great video. Your channel always has good sailing content, dealing with the reality of various conditions, giving your viewers a sense of what it is really like. We are in Cabo Verde, sailing for Brazil, hoping to see you out there.
Sam, the phrase we use in OK for OUR cheapness is, "we are frugal." Don't pay the haters any mind. You keep being you and bringing us great videos of your adventures. We will keep watching. Beautiful water there. Is it too cool to take a dip in those coves?
I also just installed Pelagic unit. I chose Monitor Windvane version having it drive the trim tab on my rudder on my Falmouth Cutter 30 footer which has a Larry Pardey style vane. So far working good.
I was about to say "oh you should stop in Korcula when you're sailing back south" and then you ended the video there. Looked like a quiet night in town. When you do head back, there's a neat little island Bavljenac that looks like a thumbprint, basically an oval covered by stone walls. Would be a cool place to fly your drone. And if you look up "Fortification of Mljet", way at the northwest tip of the island there are military tunnels, one still with a cannon inside.
Yes I thought that was Korcula (Marco Polo’s birthplace). Such a beautiful town and the best kite sailing in Croatia. Stop and stay a couple of days on your return trip. The Mjlet national park is also worth a couple of days. Rent a bike and ride the full loop. Stunning. Well worth the cost. Funky, narrow entrance (very deep) will make a good video
Sam, I am working on a Tiller Pilot idea that keeps the fragile electronics safely away in a separate box and the only thing possibly exposed would be the actuator component. Progressive automation makes a IP68 Acuator (Salt Spay Model). I would build the controller from an Arduino board. I have burned out one Tp32 so far and my second sounds clunky already.
Hell yes, keep telling us the costs, us , couch-sailors dreaming about this need to know !!! You r the best, BTW ...but be careful out there. Wish you the best
In my experience with tiller pilots. The circuit boards are fragile and poorly sealed. Plus sail trim is super important in controlling weather helm which has killed two of mine. The other three were all corroded circuit boards. Love what you do Sam!
I dig knowing the costs as well as your thoughts on the costs -- as it puts it into perspective -- what each place charges and if it was worth it. BUT if anyone is wondering how cheap Sam is...he once rowed ashore in a pre-lingonberry dinghy after anchoring in a busy Maui shipping port to cash in on a free birthday sandwich coupon. Respect.
It's great that you mention costs. We are many followers who are planning to go sailing ourselves, and therefore would like to know approximately how much different things cost. 🇸🇪💕😄😀
Aloha Sam, Spam and eggs over white rice? Yup, you’ve sailed to and spent time in Hawai’i. Still remember seeing Swedish Fish in Hana Bay but didn’t find your channel till much later, thanks for sharing all your adventures 🤙
My last season on the 26'footer, I had a Simrad tiller steer -- The TP-10. It was a great relief to finally be able to let go of the tiller to take a "P" or go below to get a cold drink or make a sandwich. I was very much in love with the thing. That said, there were 'problems' -- mostly of my own creation. First, I should have gotten the TP-22 (for boats up to 39 feet). My boat was a 26-footer, and the TP-10 was 'recommended' for that size range (up to 32 foot). It's always a good idea to go with 'heavy-duty' and 'oversized,' and I'll likely be going with a TP-22 when I downsize from my steel schooner and refit my 26-footer as my "old man" boat. One of the things I notices about the TP-10 (or probably any tiller pilot) is how they can overheat if they're working hard in direct sunlight. Adding a Bimini top will cure most of that problem and be more comfortable for me in the cockpit, too. The other thing I notices is how hard the TP-10 had to work at making non-stop, continuous, rudder adjustments and I realized that my rudder post bushings were badly worn. Once I replaced those, the little tiller pilot was much happier. I haven't found one yet, but I'd like to have one that has a remote -- wired or wireless, doesn't matter -- so I can sit up forward on the cabin roof and steer around the minefields of crab pots that line the Chesapeake Bay during "crab season." which runs from April to December. I had no problems with my Simrad and will probably go with that brand again if I can't find anything better.
403rd subscriber LIKE; 2,697th tag-along view setting sail... 5:02 - choppy sea serves as a bottle-opener as well. Indeed - "Cheers!" Sam. LOL. Guess you HAD to drink it.
I saw that ice cream cone and immediately wanted to suggest that the next time you're in Spain, check out Borgonesse ice cream. Lemon, specifically. Can't even describe it, it's so good. It might exist in other countries too (I have no idea) but I found it in Alicante, Spain.
LOL - "I'm cheap". I describe myself the same way. It's just a clear and concise expression. Of course better to say you are "financially prudent" but "I'm cheap" is so much more to the point. Agree - share the cost - and my I'll say the amount of info about prices that you share is appropriate.
I have had similar experiences with Simrad autopilots. I do not recommend them. On my Corbin 39, I added a Pelagic AP that piggybacks onto my Monitor windvane, the linear actuator substitutes for the vane. Pelagic also makes a tiller pilot version at about double the money of a Simrad. I wish I had known of this model when I was shopping for an AP for my Tanzer 22.
After 30 years of cruising and 1 simrad autopilot every 7 years i bought a Pelagic. 5 years on its much better than a simrad and appears more reliable and definately cheaper
Uh, sea water temp. Is better than ambient temps., usually. The Tropics aside its usually 50 to 60. Put it in a secure container. And sink it. Remember to bring it up before sailing.
Hey Sam, commented before on your channel although I'm not a sailor, although you and I flew in the same paragliding comp in Valle de Bravo. Question for you. What is the maximum wind strength you will feel comfortable sailing in ? Obviously the same applies to paragliders but you always seem to be sailing in winds way stronger than others would sail in a boat of your size.
Did you visit Korcula? It really is a lovely small island the other side of the national park with the unprounounceable name, sounds like Pelesac?? Love watching your videos, Sam. Remember one when you were heading for the Azores when you decided to give yourself a haircut! Think it was probably your last one😂😂
I used to sail a snowgoose elite catamaran "Gallico" with my ex husband until 1995 when we divorced. After that all my "sailing" has been on cruise ships after my second husband died 13 years ago. I have been all over the Eastern and western Mediterranean that is why I know the places you have been going to. I will continue following your lovely videos. Keep sailing!!
Mooring balls beating the hill like a drum a good way to ruin what should be a peaceful sleep in calm. Tie your bow line per usual then loop a cheap thin poly line to ball, pull ball to side of hull and tie thin line to stern cleat. If large buoy wedge fenders between hull and buoy. Enjoy the quiet. If wind starts up during night the stern line will break and wind pull you away from buoy.
Sam regarding your auto steering why not try something different, maybe a bit further along the tiller improve leverage or mount it on the opposite side, just a little experiment see if it improves reliability. ⛵
I think is fine to tell about the costs and what is paid in the different harbours. It's useful for other sailors that comes in the area. Who don't want to know, how to save $ 20 just by sail another 2 kilometers, before going to harbour or buoy?

Viewers, this is the best sailing channel on youtube, do not doubt it.
Praise the channel!
The Sailing Brothers is also great, ditto The old sea dog.
Every time i see one of your videos with issues with the autopilot it makes me more motivated to make a video about my custom autopilot i made with a flight controller. Much quieter, faster, cheaper, and repairable!
Great video as always!
Can you get a patent? Might be a good money maker.
Would love to know more!
make a video about it! interested
Go for it! I’ve not seen a sailing channel that doesn’t complain about the autopilots breaking down.
Do it! :)
My wife and i love sailing and watching your vids so much we are selling all our stuff and going to live full time on our Catalina 30!
May your dreams come true😊
Best of luck 👍
Where u sailing out from? I’m on the USA Canada west coast.
Vancouver Island. Lots to explore here. And might even take a trip to Mexico
Thank you Sam for sharing the info on costs for marinas, food and entry/exit fees. Those of us who cruise very much appreciate the information. Most cruisers are budget minded. 🤗 ⛵ ☀️
You mean cheap
Thanks for mentioning the price Sam. It's good to get an idea of where things are at in different places.
I agree. We're not all millionaires with $500K boats. The price of things really helps to know how you can do this on a budget.
Hi Sam, I’m from Croatia, if you got to Hvar, see if you could anchor in Stari Grad, it cheaper.

First thing I noticed after not watching his videos for a short while. They look beautiful. Love the yellow trim.
Man that last town was beautiful!!! All these little towns tucked away in these coves are just so cool

You can get waterproof covers for tiller-pilots for about £40 (GBP). Theyare not sealed at the bottom to let condensation out.
…or a plastic bag and duct tape
Completely agree, mooring buoys make the WORST noise at night...
Love the prices! Please keep it up.
You got it!
It's always 5 o'clock SOMEWHERE! LOL
Sweet video, love as many tips you give, great channel dude :)
After 30 years of cruising and 1 simrad autopilot every 7 years i bought a Pelagic. 5 years on its much better than a simrad and appears more reliable and definately cheaper
Hey Sam, great video man just wondering what do you cook your rice in does it come like that or you put it in a bag before you put it in the pot?
Love this video Sam. But I am gutted on your behalf about having to drink that warm beer
Uh, sea water temp. Is better than ambient temps., usually.
The Tropics aside its usually 50 to 60.

What was the name of the town with the purplish sky and gelato at the end?
Adriatic Sea. Go to Koper, Slovenia. It's a 1980s techno town.
Could you supply some more info on your "little chart plotter thingy"?

I'm on my third Simrad as well. Pretty sure they are designed to fail. Great when they work though.
I agree
What model autopilot? I blew out a tp10 with baba 30 tiller, got a tp32 to replace it, much more robust recirculating screw drive instead of worm gear
