An excellent player here: King's Silver Flair from around '71. This is a very well balanced horn; easy to fill, fun to play. It features a great 1st slide trigger, a .462" bore, and a bell that matches the bore - and makes this horn very easy to play. Played first with a GR64MS mouthpiece, then a Reeves C2J (trumpet/flugel piece), a Reeves 42B (a nice legit style piece), and lastly with a GR63 - definitely more of a lead piece. Enjoy! :)

In 1965 H.n White sold King and it became King Musical Instruments and moved to Eastlake from Cleveland. It wasn't till 1985 that UMI bought King from KMI.
I find my 1055t brighter than my super 20 silversonic symphony, but both are brighter than my new Bach 19072G custom I got the other day as my artist select.

Just played my King "Silver Flair" in church. Have had it 56 years, it is a Cleveland, not Eastlake (Ohio) and is my main horn when not playing my 2015 PUJE.

It's got to be great having a Puje AND a Silver Flair! Thanks for commenting! :)

Wasn’t the Silver Flair built with softer metals that would dent more easily than standard brass? Possibly lighter too? I remember my band director in high school mentioning this. He owned one at the time.

Very interesting question. I didn't notice when I had mine, it seemed normal. My opinion - they are really nice horns. I thought the tone that mine generated was very impressive. I sold mine to a friend that had played a Silver Flair in High School and always regretted selling his, so selling to him was a pleasure.I've googled your question and didn't see anything specifically addressing it, but I'll bear it in mind and keep looking. Thanks for commenting! :)

What was the best model trumpet King ever made? Super 20? Liberty? What are the differences?

Many of the vintage Kings were medium (or smaller) bore. That's fine with me; I rarely meet a Medium or Small bore vintage horn I don't like. Really, it's the leadpipe that determines whether a horn is stuffy or not. Anyway, Zig Kanstul thought the King Liberty was the best horn made in the 1900's; and he made many horns himself (but not the Liberty). I've had several/many King SilverTones; they were basically the Liberty body with a Sterling Silver bell; and they were all good, some were great. I've had several of the SilverSonic's as well, a newer model than the Silvertones. Strange, but the only Super 20's I had were the large, dual bore. I think that's what Harry James played; they play large and, frankly, I've struggle with them. Give me a nice King SilverTone in the Medium (not the Large 'Artist' bore), and I'm a happy camper. But the King Silver Flair is a fantastic horn; made just as King was transtioning into other companies as they were bought out. Many, many good models. I DO hope this ramble helps. :)

@JonathanMilam1 thank you for the wonderful information! I do remember Harry James playing a Super 20. Did he also play an Olds Recording? Or was that Louis Armstrong? I digress! LOL
I love the videos, and the wonderful stories of the history of the horns you share with us! This is a terrific channel! 🎺

Thank you. When you get into the old guys and who played what - it gets very fun. :) Here's one of my favorite (actually about my ONLY) forum; TrumpetHerald.com and a great clip of Harry James playing. Some great comment there too. Very fun! www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=163420
