Oh Michele, you're such a great teacher, not just straightforward information but humour. I love ur channel. I'm 52 and was just diagnosed with MS My right hand goes numb a lot and it really affected my drawing ability . But I am getting better. Ty .
Getting a proper perspective on objects is a continual struggle for me, your advice on depth etc is extremely helpful. Like the last commenter, I am 64 too, and I began trying my hand at watercolour during the first lockdown when my granddaughter said: “Come and do some art with me, Nanny.” The moment I held that paintbrush in my hand I was hooked. I’m not good, but I love it. My old office is now my craft room (though one of my daughters calls it my ‘crap’ room because she thinks that’s what I make 😂). I don’t care. I discovered your channel only a couple of weeks ago but I’ve already subscribed and watched several of your videos. You’re easy to listen to, very instructive and honest about your own shortcomings. I like that. Makes me, and I’m sure everyone else, feel they don’t have to get things perfect right away. Thank you so much 😊
My “aha” moment was #2…actually realized I was smiling as I listened…never thought about this & your completely right that this is the reason my landscapes, with a building, look “off”…for this reason I don’t often do these type of paintings! Thank you Michele!

Thanks Michelle. I started to draw just 1 week ago and have been doing 1 a day. First a calculator - then a cup - a house - a small village bridge - lamp sitting on a chair. Hi Michelle, just found you! I want to thank you for having so many basic, basic videos for those of us at beginner level or just needing revision for confidence. Too many videos are wonderful to watch but leave us feeling so grossly incompetent in comparison, we give up. You are a born teacher...wonderful! Blessings, and many thanks!❤❤❤
That's great Karen, I have a ton of free drawing videos on this channel, plus a full online course which is half the price of the one you were looking at :-)
Your sketching lessons are the best. I have learned so much from you. You are a great teacher who always knows what tips will be the most useful for beginners 💕🇨🇦
Thank you for this 🙏 Years ago I learnt to paint with Chinese brush strokes. The best tip I learnt is something you said, which is not to draw strokes with just the hand but to move the whole arm. It was shown to me as almost a dance, it was beautiful & extremely helpful when drawing
Extraordinary! I learned so much in this 30 minute video. You answered about a million questions I’ve had forever about drawing. I had a drawing instructor decades ago that made us all erase and start over, over and over, but she never explained what we were doing wrong and why we had to start over. I gave up on drawing for many years because that’s the impression I was left with about it, erase and start over ‘til you get it right, never having the HOW answered. Big heavy sigh. Thank you for sharing, Michelle! I’m close to tears of relief right now. I’ll be watching this many times. My biggest issue at the moment is drawing or painting from the shoulder. I don’t think I’ve quite got that yet because I have aches and pains I probably shouldn’t have, but I’m old too, lol. I’ll keep working on it. Blessings to you from Indian Rocks Beach in sunny Florida!

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber So true! In hindsight, I’d have been better off dropping the class and finding a REAL drawing instructor. I watched all of your short videos too, and also learned a lot. Would you consider doing a short that demonstrates the mechanics of drawing from the shoulder. For some reason my head doesn’t get it. Either my elbow is moving too much, or my hand is moving too much. Maybe I need to clamp my arm to my side until I get a hold of this, lol. You know, I had the same trouble back in the ‘70s when learning to cut hair, I always had my arms up too high until one of my instructors pointed to the lift at the bottom of the chair and said in a commanding voice “LOWER YOUR CHAIR,” lol. I finally got it after that. Thanks for all you do and especially for your straight up approach. So many out here on YT teach a concept, and then blast the thing away with wishy washy commentary that only confuses me (and likely everyone else). Your a star Michele! THANK YOU! I have a toddler level of drawing skill at age 50, and honestly almost nothing i’ve watched has helped me. This finally gave me some pointers to start making shapes that aren’t a total car crash. The thing about paths and rivers going to the horizon has been a life long mystery to me, i was doing watercolour simple landscapes and could see that they always looked off but couldn’t figure out why 😅
It's funny how I've been an artist since my first 'wall installation' at age 2, much to my mom's chagrin... and I still learned or re-learned an easier way how to do a couple basics! Thank you Michele. :) I'm lucky because Mom did right by me and she encouraged my art and writing . At 15 she let me take over the basement, and it became my first studio. THAT was sheer luck and her generosity. So moms and dads out there - teach your kid how to clean up when their art ends up on the wrong canvas, and give them a better canvas - be it a simple pad of paper , or a spare room with table and chair and a way for them to earn money to fill it with the gear for the form of art that grabs them. The lovely madness began there in that studio and the 48 years since my first art gallery show have been made better by creating many types / forms of art. It never hurts to try something new! The best part of my art journey was the years I volunteered as an art assistant at my local VA (vet's hospital).
Thank you for sharing this very useful information that beginners can actually use rather than quick sketches that really explain nothing about what to look for in the subject. I knew about 8 of the mistakes, but I taught some drawing in High School. I saw students making these mistakes constantly. Personally, I would like to learn about how to draw forest scenes that capture the essence of particular trees ( how the limbs are shaped in different types of trees) and how to suggest the light and shadow without drawing every leaf. Complicated I know but I thought I would put this out there. Drawings can be so much more magical than photos and this is what I would like to capture.....
All good stuff. Especially the eyes not being on a straight line. I've been drawing for years but it only dawned on me recently that it is wrong to draw eyes on a straight line.
No she's wrong about this. Human eyes and eye sockets are forward facing and in line with each other, they don't curve around with the skull face out at different angles.
Michele has to be one of the funniest of the UA-cam artists. “That tree looks like it’s from a horror movie. OK, I’m going to stop drawing a tree now“. In another video, can’t remember which one, she said that playing Céline Dion music loudly should be outlawed. 😆 Also, she’s quite intelligent/knowledgeable outside of art. Considering drawing a flat fish as an example of a rule breaker was pretty cool.
I’ve been drawing for about two years and have, and continue, to make most of these mistakes. But #1 was the very best tip! Recently, I was thinking about how to draw buildings or an urban scene and thought, why don’t I place little marks to guide where I’ll put the building. It just made sense to me to do so, but I’d never seen anyone teach that. However, it never occurred to me to use them for something a lot less linear. Thanks for all these tips and I know I’ll be revisiting this video.
I showed a watercolour painting of an owl on FaceBook a while back, asking why it looked wrong, and Michelle pointed out that it wasn't the painting, but the drawing...is this tutorial for me Michelle?! 😂
This was great! I draw a barn that i went to as a kid and always draw the roof. It never occurred to me not to. Also very refreshing to hear that everyone makes mistakes. I had thought that i ‘had to’ get it right/accurate right away. Just recognizing recently that that i have put a lot of pressure on myself. I have had so many misconceptions about drawing. As a kid/12 years old (mid 1970’s)someone who taught art at a private school that i didn’t attend saw me drawing and commented this kid can’t draw, how can she paint’. I had been painting in oil for about a year at that time. I stopped painting right away and have struggled with drawing and painting. My inner voice repeatedly said you can’t draw. I allowed that negative thought to define me. It is time to change that. I can draw and i will draw.
I believe learning art fundamentals for me is key to improving my abstract (acrylic pouring paintings) -- drawing, perspective, design, color theory -- skills. Just because it may look pleasing to my eyes, doesn't mean the poured piece follows artistic reasoning as you are showing in this video. Thank you for the instruction!
Just yesterday I as attempting to draw a bowl after watching a video about...how to draw a bowl. It was well done, but omitted the tips you include here. All through, this beginner had multiple ah-ha moments. Bravo! So glad I've subscribed and just downloaded your watercolor tips from your web site and will go now and devour those. Thank you so much!
I , unwittingly, make the error of NOT drawing a repeating motif in perspective. I am so very appreciative of your time and knowledge. You just saved me a an unquantifiable amount of frustration. I. can't thank you enough for sharing your experience with us. Personally, I am forever in your debt. Between you and Alphonso Dunn, I WILL learn to draw well and in the proper manner.
You were completely correct that all of us would think “How did you know I do that?” I messed up a painting only last night (number 1 rule) and had to start cleaning the canvas. New subscriber right here, thank you!
I am very new to watercolor and artistic endeavors in general....a true newbie. I find your style of teaching extremely good to follow and I am able to repeat the steps you lay out. And I watch your videos over and over!
Bless you! As a senior citizen I decided to learn to drawing, so now all my essential tools are here, read a ‘how to book’ and yup, I made all the mistakes you stated, 1 thru 10! Thank you for showing the how-too, as I’m a visual learner I’m saving this video with my plan to watch all your other ones too. I will then restart from video 1 and draw with you! Thank you again for a great video!
Thank you. I have watched several of your videos and they are so helpful. I really like how you give an example of what not to do and then what to do; it makes a lot more sense and easier to remember. BTW I did a sketch of my favourite mug tonight which has some cartoon cats on it and some fish skeletons. I was disappointed with it when I finished but I have now looked at it several times and it is better than I thought it was. I can see things that are not right and which could be improved. I think it will be worthwhile redoing it again in the future to see how much better I can draw it.
Oh my gosh! You are AMAZING!! I learned so much from all these tricks and can see an immediate improvement in my drawing already. Thank you SO much for sharing your gift of drawing with us newbies!!
I'm guilty of every single mistake you explained and probably more. Thank you for your detailed explanations. Retraining my brain is going to be so helpful! You've broken down the brick wall I've been struggling to get over.
The technique tips are so simple to understand and I find your method of explaining very calm and clear. That's always an indecation that you have a deep knowledge of your subject. Thank you.
Wow! I have just started drawing and painting at 60 years old and I've learnt more from this video than from hours and hours of others I've watched (even some Skillshare ones!). I have to giggle because I've made so many of these mistakes and I feel so much more confident to try different things now and understand why something looks "off" and how to correct it. The lessons on perspective and the angle I'm looking at my subject from are particularly helpful. Very happy new subscriber!
Hi Glenda, this is my first time watching your channel and I have subscribed. I'm 75 years old and on a whim I bought a sketch pad. Now that I've discovered your channel, I'm going to try to learn how to draw.
In the hundreds of watercolor videos I've watched, I've never heard anyone talk about how to get your water to lie flat instead of running uphill. I couldn't figure it out by myself since I've never taken any classes, (and don't have any natural talent) but at least you touched on it in this video. I would like a more in depth explanation since I'm a little slow. lol I'm 69 and have been fiddling with watercolor off and on for many years, but I'm still not good. Your videos have really helped me a lot of times with questions I had.
Thanks Ruby! Basically if anything looks like it's tipping up towards you make it less deep, ie flatten the shape so it's wider than tall. Have a look at my other drawing videos, I think I did a landscape one that features it.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Hi Michelle, I did see another one of your drawing videos where you explained it more in depth and it helped a lot! I really enjoy your videos, but I have to pace myself...if I watch one where you're talking about watercolor pencils, I have to get mine out. Then before I've done anything with them I see another one of your videos on watercolor....out come the paints. lol I can never decide what to do because I want to do it all! I have a terminal illness, so I need to hurry. lol
Some of these I've intuitively found as I've made (bad) sketches, like making motifs shrink with distance, but others I completely missed (like the flat vase bottom). You've made a few basic rules concrete. And I followed your face-drawing tutorial to make my first portrait: my Dad for his father's day card. It actually looks like him! Thank you! I'm going to try your tip for flower facing next.
Loved this! You have such a great way of explaining things. The difference is in the details. I know my sketching is going to improve greatly as a result of applying these new techniques and retraining the brain to draw only what it really sees.
I am not a professional artist, but have had college level art training. And you are definitely right, they do not teach these techniques. They tell you about one and two point perspective which is generally linear in content, but do not, hands on, teach how to accomplish it. Nor do they describe how you can correct your mistakes (or learning opportunities). Lol. Mostly, I draw for my own enjoyment now. Due to life's complications, there has been a large span of time since I drew last. When I began again, I could see some improvement but it was still missing something. I tried reviewing fundamentals again, but they lacked basic common sense approaches. Your video finally enabled me to see where the errors were. Most definitely, I was not taking the extra step to set up my composition grid. I was short-cutting. And your refresher for perspective was easily understood. Even though I feel I will still need more practice drawing at different perspectives/angles, it has reminded me of the importance of taking the extra step of awareness of my position to the item I am perceiving. Thank you.
This helped me so much! Your visual examples along with your explanations were so very clear! I have frequently looked at things that I have drawn and said to myself, “there’s something wrong here“. Thanks to your video, I now understand what has been wrong with some of my drawings! What’s more, right now I have a way to avoid those errors. Thank you so much!
Many thanks for your excellent tutorial, I am retired and would like to develop a skill I learnt in school, a very long time ago! I am confident that following your instructions these skills may resurface..... eventually!
This tutorial is sooo helpful. I am learning watercolour technique two years now) but find myself constantly frustrated because I’ve never learned to draw - so I copy drawings made by others. Then I feel like I’ve cheated and am unhappy. Your tips and the explanations behind the mistakes are invaluable. Thank you. I’m a dedicated subscriber of your channel.
Wow! I am a watercolorist who doesn't often sketch first but I do want to know how to do it and have always been quite bad at it. One lesson with you here (I followed along with my sketch pad) and I saw my drawing abilities improve almost instantly! I still have to do much more practice, but for the first time I know that I can do this, I can sketch! Up until now I told myself I had to accept that I will never be able to sketch adequately. Thank you SO much for this great tutorial. I am over the moon with my results already. I can't wait to keep practicing and see how far I can go with this skill.

You make more sense than most youtubers.
Why thank you!
I'm so glad I found u. If I don't. I'll never know how great u can teach.
You are very welcome!
It's funny how I've been an artist since my first 'wall installation' at age 2, much to my mom's chagrin... and I still learned or re-learned an easier way how to do a couple basics! Thank you Michele. :)
I'm lucky because Mom did right by me and she encouraged my art and writing . At 15 she let me take over the basement, and it became my first studio. THAT was sheer luck and her generosity.
So moms and dads out there - teach your kid how to clean up when their art ends up on the wrong canvas,
and give them a better canvas - be it a simple pad of paper , or a spare room with table and chair and a way for them to earn money to fill it with the gear for the form of art that grabs them.
The lovely madness began there in that studio and the 48 years since my first art gallery show have been made better by creating many types / forms of art. It never hurts to try something new! The best part of my art journey was the years I volunteered as an art assistant at my local VA (vet's hospital).
Fantastic story!
Number one is great!
I love the points that u make! 32:35
Must remember to repeat, repeat, repeat these tutorials
You make the best instructional videos I have ever seen. EXCELLENT!!! Thank you ❤
Wow, thank you!
I remember my old art teacher used to say "draw what you SEE, not what you know..."
Good advice!
Glad you found it useful Jane :-)
I have committed all the mistakes when attempting to draw anything. Thanks so much for explaining so brilliantly
I showed a watercolour painting of an owl on FaceBook a while back, asking why it looked wrong, and Michelle pointed out that it wasn't the painting, but the drawing...is this tutorial for me Michelle?! 😂
Now don't be complaining because you got your very own video :-) :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber lol.. Shucks!!! ❤️ ❤️
Good luck Lisa!
Thanks!!
In some cases, this is why someone invented abstract, nothing matters then! haha
Great tips, I'm on my beginners art journey and to have explanations I can understand is gold. Thank you Michele
😂
Great tips I will be sure to use in my next art project. Thank you Michele
Brilliant Frank, thanks for subscribing!
Duuuude.. genius, woman! 🧐 I love-love. Cheers from Sacramento 🥂 to art!!
Like your new setup! Hope you’re finally enjoying some lovely spring weather! Excellent tips as always!
Yes! Thank you!
Thank you for actually explaining perspective in a way that I can understand better.
You can do it! Happy to help!
I've never taken lessons and I've made every one of these...and more! You are a brilliant teacher. Hi from Melbourne, Australia.
Hi, and thank you!
You were completely correct that all of us would think “How did you know I do that?” I messed up a painting only last night (number 1 rule) and had to start cleaning the canvas. New subscriber right here, thank you!
Thanks for subscribing, glad you found it helpful!
I have made pretty much all of those mistakes. I'll be practising my drawings using your methods.
I love that this video so wholly encompasses my theory that learning to draw is like 90% learning to SEE
I am very new to watercolor and artistic endeavors in general....a true newbie. I find your style of teaching extremely good to follow and I am able to repeat the steps you lay out. And I watch your videos over and over!
Thank you so much!
Thank you Michele! I learned more from this tutorial than I have learned from months of face to face drawing classes. Gwen
Glad it was helpful!
These were super helpful. You caught me while drawing and I litarally made the one with the flat bottom of objects on a flat surface.
Glad it helped!
Well done, learning to critique your own work is one of the best ways to learn!
Oh my gosh! You are AMAZING!! I learned so much from all these tricks and can see an immediate improvement in my drawing already. Thank you SO much for sharing your gift of drawing with us newbies!!
You are so welcome!
I'm guilty of every single mistake you explained and probably more. Thank you for your detailed explanations. Retraining my brain is going to be so helpful! You've broken down the brick wall I've been struggling to get over.
Glad it was helpful!
These are incredibly helpful! I've only barely started out drawing as an adult, and now I know things to watch out for as I go.
So glad I helped Eliza, good luck with your art :-)
This by far the best video I have ever watched about drawing! Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. I learned more in this video than in any of my art classes from school. It gave me more confidence to pick up a pencil and try again.
Oh, good luck Amy :-)
The technique tips are so simple to understand and I find your method of explaining very calm and clear. That's always an indecation that you have a deep knowledge of your subject. Thank you.
Thank you 😊
Thanks
Thanks so much for subscribing Wendy!
I have a terminal illness, so I need to hurry. lol
@@rubyfisch5077 bless you, I hope you stay healthy for as long as possible and get to make lots of art 🙏❤️
Great practical advice--worth watching more than once--engaging and easy to understand--thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved this! You have such a great way of explaining things. The difference is in the details. I know my sketching is going to improve greatly as a result of applying these new techniques and retraining the brain to draw only what it really sees.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for this video!! ^__^ I’ve been a self taught artist and now a atercolorist for 31 years…^_^ Please keep sharing your teaching techniques…
Thank you! Will do!
Thank you.
Glad it helped you Cynthia, thanks for watching!
You're so welcome!
Thank you! I’ve struggled with all of the mistakes but you have made it very clear how to avoid them all.
You're very welcome!
Thanks so much for your support, glad I could help!
Very good information and presented in a way that people will remember, thanks.
My pleasure!
Thank you I just found your videos. I'm recently retired and beginning watercolour painting. Looking forward to seeing more.
Welcome, thanks for watching!
I havent drawn anything since school. I'm too scared to start but these tutorials are helping so much to get me in the right mindset
You're welcome, Bethany. Glad to have you back on-board with us! :D
Brilliant. Anyone can learn to draw and that includes you. It just requires belief and practice!
Thank you so much! You have greatly improve my skills with one short video.
I'm about to learn how to draw, and these tips are extremely helpful to a beginner like me! Truly appreciate it! 💖
