For your rum trade route, the way to solve the situation is that while one ship loads rum in New World, the other ship should start from Swords. That way your route will be optimised and you won't have any shortages
you still get delay's or shortages as one ship moves slowly and loading time and eventually they're in the same port. One way I found to somewhat offset this is add sails/people to ships so that they have different speeds and cargo slowdown. When you do that, they still meet once in a while but its more optimized.
My thought was send the rum on a trade route to Rush, then have another ship distribute, the short distance, from there. That way the two ships carrying the rum from the New World are less likely to get in each other's way.

Thank you for the shot out Darren! We all know how difficult it is to make Lady Margaret Hunt happy, and keep her happy. By the way, don't forget to increase your grain farms' production, I noticed your pig farms can't get enough grain to boost their production rates. Your videos have become my weekly routine. Love your videos!
Man this series has really been helping my with the grind at work lately, I look forward to watching it in the evenings every day a new episode comes out
The Path takes at least 20 minutes. One thing I did was using steam ships for intersession voyages, having islands at the extremes of each session as depots. From these depot islands sail ships ferried the goods to and from the islands where they are needed within one session.
It's funny how he sits there and laments not having items to go into town halls/trade unions, yet he never really does a proper inventory of what he has, both on islands and in ships. It obviously gets a bit lost in the sauce, but it is entertaining as the bystander. Awesome work on your videos!
I know this is way too late, but the issue with loading up rum is that Puerto Banus has a storage capacity limit below the 200t that each ship on the trade route wants to pick-up. Thus it has to wait until the difference is produced, if you’ve set it to wait until full that is. The solution is to only take 150t per trip, or to upgrade the storage capacity to above 200t. Assuming the production speed is above 200t per trip of 2 ships, of course.
14:45 I'm a network developer and was very frustrated when I could not limit the number of goods I load and unload, Similar to how TCP uses a sliding window to control the flow. After sleeping on it, I came up with a solution. What I do is set a minimum number of goods at the destination such that the destination will not run out of the good before the source does a round trip. I will then set up the route so that at the destination it will unload everything it brought over. Then it will just try to load it up again (i.e. unload and load). It will load all goods that exceeded the minimum set. It works nice. I don't think a ship returning with almost everything it left with is a problem. In fact it's a good thing -- it will only consume what the destination needs and no more. Again, I'm a 25-year veteran of computer networking and have a completely different view on this. The result is that the destination only gets what it actually needs and does not waste goods it does not need -- especially if the destination has a large storage size. The downside is that the ship takes longer to unload/load so I try to enhance the ship and/or dock with items to speed up loading. When the destination grows and needs more of the good, first you increase the minimum and, if need be, add an additional cargo ship and adjust the minimum accordingly. This design has its flaws, or should I say, things to be aware of. If, for example, you have an island near the other regions and you use it for storage so ships don't need to go all over the place to gather goods -- they just go to the nearest island once they enter the region. I do not use the flow control technique across regions because the minimum can/will conflict with local trade routes for the same good. I use the storage island's maximum storage to control the flow. I do use storage islands that are near other regions and storage islands, well they store goods and a lot of them. That's their purpose. The benefit of this flow control technique is quite stark when one considers supplying many local islands with the same good. Without the flow control, you would find that you are either running out of the good from time to time (i.e. conservative) or you are giving an island too much (i.e. liberal). With this technique the flow is controlled, and each island can have it's own minimum and it keeps only what it needs. It won't drain the source which is vital because the source is the source for many islands. Basically this is just networking 101. I realize this is over thinking it a bit but I can't help it. It's in my blood and I have fun with this game. BTW, I was having concerns over influence, or the lack of it. until I stumbled upon a video, maybe yours, that football is the key, or at least that's how I interpreted it. Five influence per household is nice but not sustainable. So far, every time I kick off a game, that's 150 influence. That's sustainable! The game is much more enjoyable now.
two years late but this series is fantastic - also when all those lights went up in the engineer area all I could think of was Seinfeld with the Kenny Rodgers Roasters and Kramer! thanks for this content!

Thank you for these videos! I’ve been following along doing the same map seed. I think like you I’ll take some breaks to just put ornaments up. I might cheat a bit with an active pause (well, spice it up extremely slow slow game speed) just for the ornaments. you can skip the rum production in the new world by getting a character that produces rum in the schnapps distillery. That saves the expense of the rum production, the travel times and ships for the trade routes. It also saves a ton of building space in the new world
I didn’t forget the silos, all 5 of them only take 1 wheat farm. It’s mostly just the electricity putting double demand on Malt and an increased production rate on bread.
Greatly enjoying he series! I never really found world builders very interesting, then I stumbled into your channel.. ;) You're doing a great job! Keep at it!
