Litter Pick 16: Fly Tipping, Bins & Fire Extinguishers!

- Just to put this video into context:
Initially we had intended on doing a local pick but Darren was going to film some shorts. It became apparent however that after discovering some fly tipping no further than a few hundred yards from our home that this was to be a full video and one that nearly broke us.
Our spirit to keep the community clean was tested to the max, the fly tipping, dumped wheelie bins, litter floating (or stuck) in an icy canal and the same areas we walk time after time all begged the question: Why? Why do we bother? We were pretty deflated with it all this particular Sunday.
The one thing that keeps us doing this the most is the positive comments we receive whilst out and about during the picks and the feedback we get from fellow pickers and followers here and on other platforms.
Our community, nature and wildlife are another pretty good reason to continue our quest for a cleaner space to thrive.
Our small channel on UA-cam in our small part of the world are pretty irrelevant in the scheme of what's going on right now but somehow it means a lot more to us.

By the way, the fly tipping was collected a couple of days later by the local council and the scarf we found was actually a large shawl which has been washed and will be donated to a charity.

It would be fascinating to have a hidden time-lapse camera set up over a period of a week to see just where all the litter comes from. (Not saying you guys should do this lol) but it would be very interesting to see the source(s) of all this littering 😢

The sad thing is people that litter like this have no respect for themselves and that translates into everything they do. society has gone wrong somewhere along the line, but its good to know that there are people like you guys out there making a difference. keep up the good work. because there are way more good people than bad people out there.
I am glad they found that trashcan though. It really did help and Willie will help in the future litter picks.

It is very disheartening, it's sad that some people have such disregard for where they live and the planet in general.
They should be caught and locked up.
It does make you feel like giving up but without all your efforts imagine how bad it would be.

You inspire others. After watching your videos, I go outside and clean up the street. I even purchased a litter picker.
So just know that you are inspiring people to clean up their neighborhoods. Can’t change the people who litter. That’s a different mentality all by itself.

Great job chaps, lots of people out there do really appreciate what you both do and that's including me. Ive been out twice this week and filled another 6 bags and lots of people say thank you which makes it all worth while.

Don’t give up. I’ve been litter picking pretty much all of my life (I’m 57). I do notice a difference in areas where I litter pick after a while. Less litter, more people enjoying themselves in public areas that are clean. One area in particular, a busy highway behind a housing estate of mostly pensioners, that I started cleaning up in the past couple years made a big difference. I didn’t know it at first but most of the pensioners had stopped looking out their windows because of all the litter. It took many trips by car but I finally got it cleaned up. One of the pensioners came outside and thanked me, and said that they can enjoy looking out their windows again. The traffic from the highway was too heavy and the pensioners could not safely cross to clean up the litter on the opposite side from the housing estate.

It's very frustrating having to wait on weather conditions and momentum to shift it all! Think factories should have to clear their grounds by law.

Weekly has been the norm for many years here in the UK. Some councils collect fortnightly now too.
Surely their identification is possible. Content of the bags should reveal it.

Do people at homes in the UK need to pay to someone come and get their regular garbage? In my country is included in the water bill (except the recycling that is free for paper, metals, plastic, glass, some times oils, small electric devices, small batteries. And big items can be near the garbage boxes in some days of the week and the county picks up (each county decides if they pick up big items and if yes how and when and some may charge), but I guess in some other countries people need to pay to someone... if it is the case it does make sense that people simply throw it away into the streets.
No, the rubbish is collected weekly for free in our area. The only thing we pay for is garden waste to be collected.
Nice to know. Just weekly? In my area the normal waste is being collected every day. But everyone puts the waste in the big (1100 litre) bins. Again in some other areas the times of collection may be different.
So I guess that is just people being lazy or bad when they don't put the garbage in the proper place.

Follow through in life is so important. I’m sure all humans forget things and litter unintentionally but to deliberately leave your waste for another human to pick up is vile.
The council should fine them and deliver it outside their front door for doing this .
