Kantele Song No.3 - Custom Koa Xun in E4

A song I originally composed years ago for the 5-stringed Finnish kantele, this is one of several melodies I have adapted from the kantele, which are very simple but fun songs to play on the xun, and perfect for beginners to start learning on, particularly since this melody uses only the first 5 notes of the xun. I also use this and other simple kantele-derived melodies during the tuning and voicing process of building these xun for checking intonation and response of the lower notes.
This piece is performed on a newly completed custom ordered 8-hole xun in figured koa for one of my best friends, who requested this xun to match his ukulele. Koa is extremely light yet exceptionally resonant, lending itself to a beautifully rich and warm tone with great projection. This particular piece of koa was hand selected for this project, with an incredible iridescence to the grain that moves like fire in the light.
