Let's say they use those 2nd Rd picks at the deadline this year, 2024(Sas), 2028(Bos), along with someone who's not fitting to bring in a more needed rotation piece. Then eventually trade Ayton next offseason and hopefully get good value in return, (like a cheaper center and a 1st rounder or abunch of 2nd's..) especially if Booker comes back with a new contract. Which leaves them with.. 2024 late 1st Rd swap 2024 2nd Rd pick (Den) 2025 1st Rd pick??? Really doesn't look bad how you look at it and honestly the Sun's have a pretty good window to win a championship, if they're able to resign Booker of course and get rid of Ayton's 30 mil. F Toumani Camara and PG Jordan Goodwin look good in the summer league and could be part of the future or become assets. Drew Eubanks could make a nice career for himself in Phoenix and consistently signing smart minimum free agents every year could work out. Can't wait to see it pan out lol
This is a loophole that will probably be addressed in the next CBA. What's to stop a team from doing this over and over again? They brought in a third team. Why not bring in a 4th, etc? I'm surprised no one's done this before.
What stops them is the other team saying no. Yes, they are creating this “new asset out of thin air” but with each additional team added to them swap, it’s getting less and less valuable.
Hypothetically, they can go and do it 29 times. That's insane... I'm astonished that the regulation covering pick swaps didn't forsee this and limit it in some way (such as 3 teams involved max)...
@@blablablaa14 I agree it's a gamble. I'm just saying it's crazy that the bylaws hadn't forseen that sort of thing, and (just for the practicality of keeping track of things) limited the number of teams involved in swapping a single pick.
@blablablaa14 they created 2nd rounds picks out of nothing, id hardly call that stupid.. whats the difference for PHX if they get pick # 25 instead of #18? Practically nothing
@@MavenFade They didn't. They pretended to. They offered a second round pick swap but they only get it back if San Antonio falls exactly between 50-55 which is unlikely. They just added more leverage to an overly over leveraged team
This isn’t the first time that teams have further traded their swaps. Just off the top of my head the clippers, thunder and rockets as well as the nets, Sixers and Jazz had done it in of the drafts over the last couple of years.
They didnt do anything yet. Suns made a mistake in the durant and cp3 trade imo. This team was young outside of those 2 i think they could of build something better with bridges and cam johnson.
I'm not sure if it's outsmarting anyone. They're just creating the most volatile/boom or bust situation possible. It is creative though, I'll definitely give them that. But it's nothing more than betting even more on 1-2 years than they already had. I am curious as to whether the league is gonna outlaw this kind of thing. Imagine how complicated this could get when some idiot GM goes 7 teams deep into a swap with 4 or 5 different picks lol.
Creating assets out of thin air doesn't seem like a sustainable thing for the league itself. If both the wizards and magic finish below PHX and get a higher draft position then the trade becomes a moot point and no value was provided right? Or am I missing something
Pick swaps are not a thing in any sport except for the NBA, even the sports with larger 7 round drafts like the NFL and NHL. Why the NBA still allows it is pretty wild and I could see it being banned in the next CBA, but even then that'll be years down the line.
Not necessarily how you described the pick swap scenario. The first team traded with, doesn't get the second team traded with pick if it is higher, just the higher pick between them & phoenix. So Phoenix will always have the lowest of the three, but the other two depend on when the trade was made.
Great breakdown, Tucker. I personally think Phoenix FO is overplaying their hand. I believe Durant is due for a major cliff dive just about any time now. I doubt he plays more than 50 games this regular season, but if he’s healthy when the playoffs start, maybe they take Denver to six games again. I don’t see this roster winning a ring though. Beal doesn’t play defense and Ayton doesn’t play well with others. That leaves getting the Suns over the hump squarely on Durant’s shoulders. I seriously doubt his body will hold up much longer. When he can no longer jump, he’ll no longer have an advantage.
@@thegoldenhero Respectfully disagree. He doesn’t have a compact body like Chris Paul. He missed significant time in all but one of his Brooklyn seasons, and had at least one season in OKC where he missed 30 games because of a foot injury. Only person with his body type to play effectively at 38: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was heavy into yoga, and had few injuries his entire career. Durant’s window is almost closed right now. Too much wear and tear, not enough PM along the way.
@timskaggs3762 Chris Paul has missed time through his career and during the worse times like the postseason....we'll see but I'd put money on KD still being elite 3 years from now due to his scoring ability and size though i expect his defense to fall off.
@timskaggs3762 The player who I would expect to fall off a cliff is someone like Kawhi, who body seems to be breaking down even with load managing due to his degenerative knees.
What nobody is talking about is that every Phoenix pick is going to be 30th for the next 7+ years due to their excessive salary. If we stay heavily into the cap, the new CBA says that you go to last in the draft. So these pick swaps are worth nothing.
People forget about his and still hating . Plus even if all else fails by the end of the 20s booker can be traded for huge amount of assets back so rebuild won’t be that hard. But either way I don’t want Booker to leave he’s a sun4life

I really think you should make a whole video about the raptors, I think that massive moves are inevitable because they owe their pick top 6 protected to the spurs and Pascal and OG can be unrestricted fa
Issue is Pascal has told other teams he will not guarantee re-signing with them if they were to trade for him. He allegedly loves it in Toronto and doesn't want to leave, which puts the Raptors in a total bind since they really need to blow it up and rebuild top to bottom but they're being handcuffed by Pascal and their own incompetency re: the OG situation. Both Memphis and NY are offering large packages for him and the Raptors are refusing for seemingly no good reason.

@pacman7658 "everyone needs to speak like me and spell like me because im ignorant, or maybe im just too stupid to understand there are multiple languages so there could be more than one way to spell a word" -- pacman7658
So you can technically trade away one draft pick 31 times, thus securing, that you will draft last... and then really fuck up your salary cap and draft last, due to the new salary cap punishments...
Phoenix are taking major risks since Matt Ishbia took over the team back in February. They are too heavy on offense with their starters. Granted they managed to squeeze in a bench. Essentially, I don’t think the moves will be enough when the playoffs come back around in 24. The lack of quality defense will be their downfall
Lol the suns were a top 7 defense last year and now they added a defensive maestro in vogel and younger longer bigger pieces why do you feel that their defense is gonna be so subpar?
Josh Okogie, Bates-Diop, Eubanks, Camara, Lee, and Goodwin are all solid defenders. The Suns have enough to win a Championship. The Suns were #7th in Defense last season even though most of that was before the KD trade.
People are missing the point. Either you are going all out or go full rebuild. There is no in between. Why? Because if you spend a decade being just a mid team, you have to ask yourselves: Are you going all out or scrap it and go rebuild? You don’t want to spend 10 years and still be mid. You want to spend those 10 years either rebuilding or contending. There is no in between. You can’t be mid. While a team is so mid, you have teams rebuilding and there’s a chance in the next 5 years they will start to compete. It’s a pendulum swing. Those are rebuilding will be contending and those are contending will be forced to rebuild. You can’t be in the middle. You are wasting your time.
I don't really understand but would like to know more. I don't get how an asset was created out of "thin air" or why other teams would try to replicate this. I don't understand how this a swap on a same swap. Between Washington, Magic, and Suns there are three picks in 2026 according to the narrator. The three teams just agreed albeit independently that among these three picks pheonix will end up with lowest one for win-now assets right? Isn't it as simple as that? Its not a swap on a swap that'd be crazy no? Why do I feel like I am not understanding this
I still dont get the Wizards, Magic and Suns analogy. Suns get the worst outcome of the picks and Orlando gets 2nd outcome and Washington 1st. But what is Suns already have worst pick and Orlando gets better pick than Wizards? Does this mean Wizards get Orlandos better pick?
I wouldn’t call it outsmarting anyone. What I would say is gaining those second rounders could really help them get a win now piece at the deadline but I still don’t see this roster winning a title at any point so
To me this is not a smart move at all unless they actually win the chip. They're building an extremely high risk 2-year outlook around a team with an aging KD, injury prone Brad Beal and Devin Booker. Book hasnt proven himself as "the best player on a title team" yet. He could very easily request a trade within the next two seasons and your best security for him is Kevin Durant who is 1) aging 2) injury prone and 3) has not made it to the conference finals since he was at Golden State. And since the Suns are getting the worst out of these pick swaps their rebuild is going to last an easy 6 years unless some random trade miracle happens.
Disagree Devin Booker led the Suns to the Finals in 2021 & was just 2 wins away from a championship & he put up multiple 40 point performances in the Finals, Booker has proven he can be the best player on a championship team. Granted the Suns haven't won yet but Booker is capable of being the best player on a Title team.
I agree that it is a high stakes game. Time will tell if Phoenix has outsmarted anyone or if they look dumb as hell for doing this. The more pressing decision this season is does Beal or Booker start at PG and which one is the SG. Both are good passers and ball handlers. But neither of them are a true PG. At least to this point in their careers. Chris Paul was that. A true floor general. He may not have the physical gifts he had a few years ago, but he still is a smart, highly skilled pg with great decision making skills and the ability to pass to people in really tough situations. The Warriors have a really smart addition to their locker room. But with the Suns....they have some decisions to be made how they want that starting lineup to work. I do think with how much they were restricted by being top heavy, that they did make some good minimum contract signings. But they don't have a lot of balance to take care of the team if anyone gets injured. That trade exception, will probably be very valuable to them this season.
un guessing ur not a suns fan. the suns have ALWAYS had a very solid true PG. kevin johnson, nash, kidd, even cp3 in there...... we are still waiting on a championship. we can try less of a positional team,
I know he was before your time, but I remind everyone about Ted Stepien, the awful owner of my Cavs 40+ years ago, and the reason for the "Stepien rule." The NBA might have to institute a new rule to again save teams from themselves. We'll see how this fleshes out...
you always have these super successfull businessmen buying franchises and basically make their franchise horrible for at least 5-8 years after 2 seasons. youd think a businessman would have something like....a longterm vision? i mean this isnt as bad as the nets, but it will be up there i think edit: i mean the retirementclub nets
They still have Booker no matter what. Trade him if need be in the future. End of the day living in Arizona and playing with Book should keep players wanting to go there and keep them solid regardless of draft picks.
I am a fan of what they did the suns have played it safe for the last 55 years we've got zero titles to show for it the minute they traded for kd that was it its time to go all in. As for the so called suns gonna suck a long time not really they have picks besides how many young developing players do you want on a team like this? Second if in 3 years time it doesn't work and there really that horrible they can easily trade booker or ayton or both and completely replenish their talent and first rounds picks this is not like when the nets traded for Paul pierce garnett lol suns still have 2 young very good pieces who will be in there prime when that time comes

The funny thing is people think Phoenix future is ruined and won’t get any draft players but many frogot Ayton and booker are still on the team Barley into there primes. If all else fails booker is still a top 3 SG and many teams will definitely trade for him and phx can receive 1st rounders or young players in exchange. As a sun fan I hope booker dosent leave but if we win a championship it will all be worth it.
2024 late 1st Rd swap
2024 2nd Rd pick (Den)
2025 1st Rd pick??? (Ayton trade)
2026 late 1dt Rd swap
2026 2nd Rd pick (Det, Mil or Orl)
2028 late first Rd swap
2028 2nd Rd pick (Mem)
2029 2nd Rd pick (Mem)
And possibly having Booker, Beal and Durant together for at least 3 years..Beal and Duran could retire there, or trade them in the last year of their contracts.
Teams have done this before
What stops them is the other team saying no. Yes, they are creating this “new asset out of thin air” but with each additional team added to them swap, it’s getting less and less valuable.
Thank you for putting the visual off the pick swaps for a millisecond 😂
Kevin Durant + Devin Booker + Bradley Beal < Prime Jokic
Hypothetically, they can go and do it 29 times. That's insane... I'm astonished that the regulation covering pick swaps didn't forsee this and limit it in some way (such as 3 teams involved max)...
Its not that smart of a move. A swap is a gamble. Most NBA GMs don't like to bet on their team future
@@blablablaa14 I agree it's a gamble. I'm just saying it's crazy that the bylaws hadn't forseen that sort of thing, and (just for the practicality of keeping track of things) limited the number of teams involved in swapping a single pick.
@@NunoVippan The bylaws aren't designed to prevent teams from doing something stupid youre right
@blablablaa14 they created 2nd rounds picks out of nothing, id hardly call that stupid.. whats the difference for PHX if they get pick # 25 instead of #18? Practically nothing
@@MavenFade They didn't. They pretended to. They offered a second round pick swap but they only get it back if San Antonio falls exactly between 50-55 which is unlikely. They just added more leverage to an overly over leveraged team
This isn’t the first time that teams have further traded their swaps.
Just off the top of my head the clippers, thunder and rockets as well as the nets, Sixers and Jazz had done it in of the drafts over the last couple of years.

Thank you for breaking that down!
Creating assets out of thin air doesn't seem like a sustainable thing for the league itself. If both the wizards and magic finish below PHX and get a higher draft position then the trade becomes a moot point and no value was provided right? Or am I missing something
It would be hilarious if they get swepped in the 1st round 😂

If this blows up in their face I could see a new rule against it
Pick swaps are not a thing in any sport except for the NBA, even the sports with larger 7 round drafts like the NFL and NHL. Why the NBA still allows it is pretty wild and I could see it being banned in the next CBA, but even then that'll be years down the line.
Why does that sound like someone in finance or banking came up with the strategy? Very creative tinkering.
luv the vid
He is still an elite player after a rupture achilles it is more likely KD will be an elite player until he KD 38.

Teams wouldn't trade so many picks if they could just trade consecutive picks IMO. It's time to get rid of the Stepien rule
So you can technically trade away one draft pick 31 times, thus securing, that you will draft last... and then really fuck up your salary cap and draft last, due to the new salary cap punishments...
That team will crumble at the 1st sign of adversity
The Suns defense doesn't need to be Great, as long as it's at least middle of the pack I don't see anyone beating them.
Over the 🔝 indeeed
Only 1 team wins an NBA championship. The idea is to be entertaining and competitive. So imagine A combo of Miami and klKings

Calculated risk. Hope the get the biscuit
I don’t think this is a good idea by the Suns, but a hell of a play. Didn’t even know you could do this
I don't really understand but would like to know more.
This was Orlando outsmarting the league. They don’t need second round picks so why not try to move up a few spots?
3:25 I don’t think that’s how it works. Why would magic do this? How tf is Washington entitled to get Orlando’s pick if orlando’s pick is better?

Disagree
Devin Booker led the Suns to the Finals in 2021 & was just 2 wins away from a championship & he put up multiple 40 point performances in the Finals, Booker has proven he can be the best player on a championship team.
Granted the Suns haven't won yet but Booker is capable of being the best player on a Title team.

They didnt trade all their 1 rounders for KD. They traded half of them.

Most teams that have made the same gamble as the Phoenix Suns have ended up losing. They traded away their peripheral defenders. God help them.
They still have Booker no matter what. Trade him if need be in the future. End of the day living in Arizona and playing with Book should keep players wanting to go there and keep them solid regardless of draft picks.
