- Mary McAleese grew up the eldest of nine children in a tumultuous time in Northern Ireland. Her family was forced to leave the area by Loyalists when The Troubles broke out. She was the first Irish President to come from Northern Ireland and the first woman to succeed another woman as the eighth President of Ireland from 1997 - 2011. An outspoken advocate on many issues concerned with justice, equality, social inclusion, anti-sectarianism and reconciliation it was no surprise the theme of her Presidency was 'Building Bridges'. Mary graduated in Law from the Queen's University of Belfast in 1973 and was called to the Northern Ireland Bar in 1974. In 1975 she was appointed Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin and in 1987 she returned to her Alma Mater, Queen's, to become Director of the Institute of Professional Legal Studies. In 1994, she became the first female Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Queen's University of Belfast. In 2013 she received a master's degree and licentiate in canon law of the Roman Gregorian University.

I am beyond proud to have had such an incredible woman as my president for 14 years and as an Irish woman raised as a Catholic who in her adult life has felt so unbelievably let down by a church that I gave so much to in my younger years I am so so glad to hear such a smart and eloquent woman speaking out on so many of the issues that have troubled and angered me for so long. President McAleese, you have started something remarkable and there are so many of my peers who will gladly stand with you on this issue!! Thank you!

Some RCC teachings do not have a biblical basis. For example the Bible does not require priestly celibacy or reject women priests.

Celibacy is taught in Scripture but it is a practice and not a teaching. And Jesus never ordained a woman and so we can't.

Jesus ordained each of the apostles. He told them to "do this in memory of me". They could not offer sacrifice unless Jesus had ordained them priests. And the apostles go out as we see in Acts to ordain bishops and priests (elders) passing on what they had received from Jesus. Jesus' priesthood far exceeds that of the entire Levite clan because all they could do was to sacrifice animals in a way which did nothing regarding sin. The Christian priesthood shares with that of Jesus in a way that is effective and redemptive.
So become an Anglican then. Why are you hanging around trying to change the Roman Church? Go be a liberal Protestant.

Speaking As An Irish person, I've heard this ex President of my country making a very emotional speech on a recent Late Late Show .a show watched be a great proportion oh the Irish population. She was accompanied by another ex President Mary Robinson. For a so called Law Professor McAlssee showed her complete ignorance in her condemnation of Putin without putting context around what lead up to the invasion of Ukraine .She gave the viewers a very distorted view of the Ukrainian tragedy , and Robinson stood idly by without giving the other side of the story. There are other clips of this debacle by RTE., on youtube , but the contents are blocked for any comments, so I has to make my views known here.

AMAZING speech by Mary. How different the world would be if more women such as her were holding the reins - even just the occasional ear - of Church hierarchy?! It is sad that others such as Sally Carroll cannot see this . Think - who was one of Christ's closest friends? Mary Magdelan, of course. If He were to come back today, His disciples would probably be predominantly women!

Mary speaks so uncharitably about His Holiness Pope Francis, she appears to be lacking all humility. She is in need of our prayers.
I would feel much more in favor of women in the priesthood if I saw women who felt the call of the Holy Spirit to serve in this way. Rather, I have seen, and still see, women who want to fight for women in the priesthood, because, by God it's their right, and no man is going to tell them what they can and cannot do! Had Mother Teresa expressed such a calling, one would have felt that it truly were led by the Spirit. I have yet to see this, but I am open to it.
We are not of the world. To say the Church must look at the secular world and learn what is right, is not a part of Jesus' teaching, and indeed, is a large part of the problems in the Church.
For example, the secular world sees abortion and gay marriage as a right for any and everyone. If the Church accepts this as the norm, then Jesus' death on the cross was for naught. There is no sin, except that which the secular world says is sin. This is usually the opposite of what the church teaches.
In any case, let's pray, that the Holy Spirit leads the Church and the leaders, and all of us!
Maybe the Holy Spirit IS leading the church. It has ordained no women in 2000 years. Jesus could have but didn't. Thus, we can't.

Great Teachings in Christianity when practiced properly (History shows us that this really never happened EVER) but we had all the positive teachings from Christianity before Christianity ever reached our shores, through their first Bishop (not Maewyn Succat as we were lead to believe… ) Would be Nice to see a Pagan Ireland again, with all its wonderful teachings as an Atheist i would think it’d be a nice change, definitely less harmful to the Irish population than the Catholic Church…
