More Brunei facts: Although only a small country, Brunei has managed to conserve 70% of its rainforests despite the pressures of development. The first time Brunei participated at the Olympic Games was in Seoul 1988. Weirdly the delegation was composed of a single official and no athletes. The first time the nation sent the athletes to compete was in 1996. From the 14th to the 16th centuries Brunei Darussalam was the seat of a powerful sultanate extending over Sabah, Sarawak and the lower Philippines. Thus, the current Sultan represents one of the oldest continuously ruling dynasties in the world. By the 19th century, the Brunei Darussalam Empire had been whittled away by wars, piracy and the colonial expansion of European powers. Kudos to them to having portraits of their leader everywhere! We do the same thing here with portraits of my grandpa and father, and it's all part of national pride. Bruneians clearly genuinely love their leader for not giving in to opposing powers and doing whatever they want, and it's something that we can also relate to. We are a nation proud of who we are, managing to rebuild our country after a devastating war, modernizing our military, and improving our facilities to better serve the people even with sanctions! Anything is possible as long as you believe.
That is called Kaya toast and other countries close to Brunei such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore also sometimes Kaya toast; the jam is often called Srikaya and it is usually made of egg and coconut milk. It is quite sweet and very delicious.

The creativity was there but without consumers it remains unknown =)

It also helps the government to plan and manage its resources. Now, since the people of Brunei do not have to pay taxes, it means that all the people's needs are covered by the government from the country's oil revenue and the people only have to comply and put their hope in the Sultan's infallibility. I don't know if that can be said towards advancing or developing the country, i’ll leave it to others to judge for themselves.

Pretty incredible how it was the economic center of the Bruneian Empire for centuries. It wasn't until a program in the 20th century that encouraged people there to relocate to land by establishing administration on land during the British protectorate period that led to a big reduction in people living in the village. And the fact it survived WWII too, it's truly a place that has lived to tell the tale! No wonder they're so proud of flying that unique Bruneian flag So there are 30 Durio species, but only nine of them have edible fruit. The only Durio species on the international market and thus the most famous is Durio zibethinus, which indeed is originally from Borneo, but also Sumatra! Its scientific name comes from Viverra zibetha or the large Indian civet because, the large Indian civet is known for its foul odor and durian's infamous aroma reminded scientists of the civet!
Bruneians are mostly typical, not open to dialogue especially with outsiders. They are not progressive and do not want to accept criticism but avoid self-examination. The most obvious is that they are only confident in their own perfection. Appreciate the criticism. And never assume every critic is a hater. If the people do not open to criticism, then they are not open to truly growing as a country.
As always, there is nothing more exciting in Brunei other than it’s food. No wonder Brunei has the second highest obese population in Southeast Asia with 18.2% of adult women and 15.2% of adult men. The prevalence of obesity is higher than the regional average. This is based on the 2023 world population review.
It is relatively boring if you are a fan of big cities filled with modern amenities but it is definitely a great country to unwind and be at peace. Bonus if you love nature because a lot of the things they have to offer to tourists is related to nature.
Why does the tour guide who introduced Brunei to this guy have to be the one who does not have full rights in that country? The Chinese in Brunei do not have the same rights as the Malays in that country. It may sound racist but that's how it is.
Bruneian Chinese has full rights which includes free healthcare, education, freehold land ownership etc. Maybe you are confused with the rights of stateless residents whom mostly are of Chinese ethnicity.

I'm sure the Chinese guy who was the tour guide on that channel was one of them. But a few years ago there was a rumor that all Chinese citizens with yellow i.c were not allowed to have permanent land (tanah kekal) anymore and all would be leased only. Is this true? If so why?
@@excelsior31107 Unfortunately, the rumour cannot be debunked but from what I've heard, that's the way it is because the population is increasing and thus, the country would rather give more chances to the native people rather than immigrants, even if they hold a yellow identity card. I wouldn't say it is racism at play but rather the government, prioritizing the native people of Brunei, also known as bumi putera, as around 70% of Brunei's forests are being protected so there's only as big of a land left. It's more or less the same as how, for instance, Chinese people can no longer be buried and need to opt for cremation because of the limited spaces in the cemeteries across the country. Before asking why can't the native people be cremated too, well, it's because cremation is apparently looked down upon in Islam. Edit: I would also like to add that most of the 2nd and so on generation of immigrants who have yellow identity cards and are able to buy plots of land as of now are most probably because they have connections with other natives or because they are working closely with the government Edit 2: Okay, update. So apparently, with regards to the limited land, that is true but not because of race. In fact, the same thing applies to the native people. Back then, to buy a plot of land, you either apply for it and wait for the government to agree or buy the land from a native who is selling them. But as of now, the government isn't opening any applications because most lands are reserved for industrial purposes. Meanwhile, the government has already provided terraces(usually grouped together and have the same structure) which you can apply for if you want your own house but any plot of lands can only be bought from a native.

I don't mean to lower anyone's creditability, but that is the fact. What i have seen of the city of Brunei so far has not changed that much and it still feels like it was in the 80s, except for the new bridge that is only admired by the residents of that area, where most of them have never left the country. If Bruneians want to survive as a high income society, they need to release their entrepreneurial spirits that are currently chained by shackles made out of the social welfare benefits. Putting their hope only in the Sultan's infallibility and neglect could prove subversive to their quality of life in the long run. Not to mention that Bruneians are also too sensitive to criticism which also means that they’re not open to truly growing as a country.
