Concise, intelligible and straight to the point, now this is an excellent youtube video, it helped me solve the problem immediately. Thank you very much.
Just saved hella money. Got the local locksmith out to change locks last month and wasn't willing to part with a large amount again to change em twice. Thanks
Just worked for me - thanks! For anyone experiencing a problem sliding the cylinder out after undoing the holding screw - taking the handles off the door helps you see better. My cylinder had a couple of rusted ballbearings which meant it could only slide out in one direction. So if yours only half slides out, try pushing the cylinder the other way out instead. That worked for me.
Brilliant! Saved me £100 installation fee by my "local" locksmith - even though he wasn't going to charge a callout fee! Took me 2 minutes and cost £7.99
I just bought and fitted 2 high security locks from b&q. what isn't mentioned in video is that the centre piece of the lock is 10mm so if you go with the measurements from centre line of door to handle faceplate each end will be 5mm longer than this measurement which could lead to quite a large amount of lock protruding from door leaving it more prone to attack. so if your external measurement is say 40mm from centre line to face plate you may be better off buying a lock that is 35mm and likewise for internal measurement. this is what I did and fits great with very little of the cylinder sticking out. with the security lock I found that there are two tags on cylinder and would only go in from the external side of the doors meaning removal of handles still took no more than a couple of minutes each. in terms of changing the lock great video made life much easier thanks. Quick update, I have just had the need to fit 4 locks to a friends doors after a break in. I bought Yale 3 star security locks from B&Q and found that these no longer have the tabs on the sacrificial part of the lock and can be fitted without the need to remove the handle, easy. I do not work for any lock company or seller but please spend the extra and fit 3 star security locks. The one star cheap ones offer no protection at all from people who would do you harm. In truth in my opinion they are so week they should be banned.
@@devon896 I don't know what country you're living in, but this certainly is not possible everywhere. In most countries, what is bought over the counter finishes the sale. It is possible to make a deposit of the money of course, but how will you be able to open the packaging without breaking it in these times when everything is sealed? The correct way of doing this is by using a caliper or constructing a static one out of cardboard.
Great video. You're loads cheaper than Screwfix for a change too! Tip: I was struggling to measure the lock with all the angles on my door so I removed it, measured it, put it back, when to BQ 😂
I bought two new cylinders but when I tried to fit them there were two `lugs` on either side and the old ones did not have these. Have I got the wrong ones or can these lugs be filed off & what do they do? Cheers.
I think you'll find these lugs are on security locks. (lock breaks if attacked. no way to unlock) remove outer door handle to fit them. I know it's to late for you but to others I hope this is helpful
Hi there, this would depend on the make of the lock. I would suggest contacting the Customer Services of the brand for more information. Sorry we couldn't be more helpful!
@@bandq i see thank you for replying! I honestly wasnt expecting much since i noticed this video is 9 years old. I dont know the make of the lock as when i moved in it was there when i arrived so i wouldnt know who to call. Again thank you for replying the video did give me an idea on how to install the lock once i get a new one!
Hi Klaire, you would need to refer to the specifications on the product page on diy.com. You would need to look for a 20/20 cylinder split. If purchasing in store the cylinder split size will be clearly displayed on the packaging. Hope this helps 😊
I haven't removed it yet but I don't see a lock fixing screw anywhere near the cylinder. the bottom screw is like 4cm below the key hole which doesn't seem right
If you have a euro lock cylinder, there will be a lock fixing screw somewhere just below the lock face, similar to the one in the video. As we're can't see your lock, we're unable to advise further, sorry we couldn't be more helpful from here. Good luck!
Hi there, you could give it a go. However, a key may be required as you need to line up the cam tongue to remove the lock. In this case, it might be best have an expert change your locks. I hope this helps!
Hi 😄 Great question! If you don't have the key, we would recommend getting in touch with your local locksmith for further assistance! We hope this helps 🔑
With our lock a key cannot be fully inserted from the outside when a key is inserted on the inside. If someone left their key in the door then you're locked out. Can I change my cylinder for one which doesn't have this problem?
Hi, is there possible some hove to change sides. I mean I have thumb turn cilinder lock. Problem is that if I put the key side outside, it's to short a bit, but if I turn cilinder around it fits perfectly, but I don't really want leave thumb turn outside. Is it possible just take it a part and change sides? Thanks
I'm sure your door is now fixed! But for anyone else: Yes, you can buy cylinder locks which are not equal sizes on either side, for example 30mm on one side and 35mm on the other.. measuring both sides in advance is necessary, just to be sure.
This hasn’t worked for me, I removed lock screw and no matter how I turn key I can’t remove lock. Do some doors have another screw that holds cylinder in place?
Caution - if you have multipoint locking (a big long strip of metal the length of the door, with several catches), the retaining bolt could be an obscure allen-headed bolt sunk in a recessed hole, almost impossible to see!
Hi there, a key will be required as you need to line up the cam tongue to remove the lock. In this case, it might be best have an expert change your locks. I hope this helps!
