For hammock camping, I reccomend bringing an extra ultralight hammock. Once your primary hammock is complete, hang the extra one underneath it and on the same straps. You'll have a dry/clean place to put stuff and can reach all of it while laying in your hammock. They are incredibly small, light and cheap. Smoothing it.
David Canterbury talks. I listen and learn. This man is full of knowledge and has tons of experience. Appreciate all the knowledge himself as well as his other instructors here on UA-cam share!!
Ive used a basic thermarest, self inflatable for years on end. Never a problem out in nature. When it finally punctured after like ten years it was not in the field but in an airport where someone had left an invisible shard glass between two tiles. It was easily field repaired. Still I upgraded to the more cold weather oriented thermarest one, arctic neo air or something like that because I hike in the arctic for months at time and live off spearfishing so I get cooled down pretty significantly in the sea every day. I just use a paper-thin lightweight tyvek foorprint underneath my tarp and bug tent inner, and I sleep like a baby on that thing on coarse rock, in bushes and brambles, on stony beaches on the forest floor, etc. Never an issue.
Excellent presentation on the pack and methodology for packing in general. It's a great pack but what I enjoy most is those mega side pockets! Those are the best.
Hey Dave , I'm not calling you out or anything so please , I'm not trying to be disrespectful or a prick . Forgive me if it comes out thataway . Just before this video I was watching one of yours from 9 years ago about how you felt one did not need a First Aid Kit or a Personal Care Kit out and about . I see how you and other instructors and influencers change , evolve , and learn new things and incorporate as much Techknowlogy as pissible despite what era or century it comes from . I just feel reassured that a lot of the Pathfinder point of view is always learning and figuring out how once p9pular ideas can be relavant again . Thank you , Dave .
Rewatched. Again. These simple, real-world videos are valuable. When I am packing out, I watch this video again. It's amazing what I forget to pack, even after hitting the woods for almost 50 years.
Your packing the main compartment with the gear you'll need last on the bottom. Then when shutting down camp you reverse the packing process. Great video Dave 👌. Also, luv your camp kitchen videos.
I love the presentation! Well done! The colors look amazing! I'm looking to upgrade my old pack and I think I just have found a winner!! Thanks Dave for all you do!
This was really good Dave. The pack methodology really is spot on. I often pack haphazardly and I'm going to change that. It makes sense to put first used on top and the last used on the bottom of your pack. Som really simple things that people, including myself, overlook way too often. It just makes a way better outdoors experience my friend. Thank you for sharing this with us brother!!
Man, I love solid backpacks, and TBH, I've never owned a pack over $50 but that doen't mean I don't want to. I believe there are some great packs out there like the one in this video, but for my experience the best pack I've ever owned I've had for over 5 years and I still have it with no rips, no areas that look worn, even internal looking out. I got it because my family and I were going through about a one year period of no transportation. Laundry and groceries, 3 to 4 times per week loaded to the brim and carried through all weather conditions about a 1 mile walk round trip, and I'm a "mountain boy" as they say, 6 feet talll 215 lbs, worked in masonry 20 years. Not saying, my buddies called me Tiny or anything:) Just want to say when I say loaded to the brim I mean LOADED to the brim if you know what I mean, I've stuffed 4 2 liter sodas and a gallon of milk in the bottom filled it with everything else I could, hand carried the bread and eggs kind of thing. Anyway, spent $40 on it, through Amazon it's a 40 liter "traveling" pack patch says "Outdoor Adventure Mountaintop Since 1986 - 'Mountaineer Outdoor Equipment It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves'" Whoever and how ever that thing was made it was made right,
Extra pair of socks, toothbrush. A bar of soap. Washcloth. Multi-functionality. Along with fire kit, if toothpaste/soap etc runs out, ashes can serve. Appreciate your vid. The Orca model fits your cup gear awesome. I have the 32oz bottle, 24oz bottom cup, stove, but went with Olicamp top cup(stamped not printed).
An amazing, informative , and to the point video. One of the best I have seen from any one that I follow on this subject. Thank you. You are the master of the craft.
That is a gorgeous and very versatile pack. I love that it has those two pouches on the side and large pouches at that. There's only one thing with it that I never have liked too much in that it is a stuff pack for top-loading pack. I've always liked the ones that load from the front and sectioned-off that way, things seem to be easier to get to in the middle of the pack as opposed to digging down through the pack but with a lifetime guarantee I believe I can deal with stuffing a pack besides front load packs are pretty hard to find now unless you pay an arm and a leg and somebody else's well I won't say that part of it but you get the message. Thanks for the video I'm sure this has helped a lot of people with how to stuff their pack. I do love how you got most things individually packed before you even put them in and that's something that I need to do. I do have the most things and separate pouches but I need to condense a few more things. When I have a top pouch I always put my map and navigation implements in the top and I've got fire all over the pack top bottom side everywhere I can put a little bit and I do use the threes with just about everything in my pack because I believe the way you do, two is one, one is none and three is the best. Dave thanks for the video I know this has helped a lot of people pack their packs better and it has helped me realize that I need to consolidate a few more things.
I really appreciate how in depth you go with the information in your videos, always right on the money it seems, been watching your tips for years man, definitely packed smart
Hey Dave, this was a great video thanks for sharing all the info. Honestly, I was initially sceptical of the scout pack due to its resemblance to the savotta Jaakari M but I do enjoy the parts that differentiate it: larger more practically sized side pockets, molle where it's not really needed, the front pouch, the inbuilt cover, the zip available from the outside of the brain and the roll top closure. Keep up the fantastic work, I've learned so much from your videos over the years.
First of all the pack is awesome I pack mine the same based on the time of year I live at the beach and pack it differently at certain times of the year based on what weather we might have I am planning on ordering another pack specially to keep packed for hurricane season awesome video on pack management!!!
Thank you so much for your videos. Its helping me learn to pack for survival. I looked at many bugout bags and they go to the extreme, I don't believe they can carry it all lol. God bless you sir.
Love the video. My load out is very similar but I don’t have the solar charger, that’s on my list now. One thing I also have on the outside on a clip is a pair of mechanics gloves. I find my self wearing them a lot in the bush even though I’m not much of a glove guy when I’m at home or work.
Me and my friends learned long ago that sometimes you don't need an ax...we just burnt our logs in half, but the fire needs to be large and there needs to be ample coal/ embers in the fire bed to maintain burning the logs.
One mistake people keep making on UA-cam is calling Dave's system the 10 C's of Survival. As he just said, it's Survivability. The distinction is important for people to understand. Having supplies doesn't mean you will Survive. But it makes your ABILITY to survive much greater. Awesome video, as usual!
Have had mine since they first came out. Been using it every day in all types of weather. By far the best pack I’ve ever had! Only have had to wash it as the salt stains make the straps very tough. lol!
I’m definitely going to be looking into buying one of these bags in the very near future. I’ve literally gotta survive a brain surgery first. Once I’m recovered this pack will be my gift to myself.🤙
You can never go wrong with an ILBE. Probably the toughest, most comfortable pack I've ever used. Only downside is the base weight of it. I cut off all the Molle webbing I didn't need and took off the top cover to lighten it up a bit. If it's raining or snowing I just put a pack cover or my poncho over it.
Right on Dave I pack this similar with a few of your SRO gear items , Silky Bigboy & sleep system ....what I love about the pack design is the attached First Aid Module ....that's genuis because my first aid does sit at the top of my pack so I'd have to open the pack ( hopefully not injured ) to access it because I'm not big on hanging molle pouches everywhere on the outside....I like it and will probably grab one ....cheers my friend I appreciate you and yours and the knowledge 🙏
I had to settle for a cheaper version of the scout pack, Mabey one day I will have one but finding one and shipping to the UK would cost a fortune. Totally worth it 👍
Dave I purchased the scott pack in the green and I love it. I just wish it had away to attach a extra pouch on the front. I highly recommend this pack supper strong.
Great discussion Dave! I'm loving my Pathfinder Scout. I went on a day hike with one of your instructor candidates (Andrew Hollister) a few months ago and was so impressed with the Scout that I abandoned my Amazon cheapy pack. The Scout really meets my wants & needs. The side pockets are great and allows me to carry the gear I want & don't have to settle for lesser products. I like that the pack is small enough to work on day hikes but it is roomy enough to carry overnight gear. I was extremely grateful to have this pack for a cold night hike because I could easily carry a sleep system as a back up plan. You didn't mention it in your video, but you did a great job of designing a pack that wears very light. The shoulder straps and kidney belt fits extremely well. My hips are able to carry the bulk of the load so my shoulders don't get worn out or stretch out into uncomfortable positions. Thanks for making it easier and easier to get out for more adventures. The knowledge that you pass on and the products that you introduce are priceless.
Good stuff Dave. I see a lot of considerations I used when backpacking. Do you keep your personal hygiene close to your first aid pouch? I was out sometimes 4+ days and that is an important item. A digging stick in place of a trowel for those important moments.
Hi David. I am french and I don't understand what is the "sheet of back tie" you talk about. Is it a trash/garbage bag?I can't find any translation. thanks for everything you do!
The saw is probably the best thing that came along for outdoor activity in a long time lot safer for people to use. Takes a long time to master a ax. An ax can and will remove toes.
Wow. Mr Dave is coming around, finally. 10 years ago I unsubscribed because he pushed his 7lbs wax cotton tarp , axe, 12lbs wax cotton pack. He still has a way to go, but he is evolving
Great information about how to pack a rucksack among other things. But he forgot something, someone may have already mentioned it before me, where is the bankline?😁
Hi David love what you do but have a question. What would be different for say a long distance trail hike of say 2,000 miles like Appalachian Trail or a long term big out situation?
First and foremost… Dave teaches from experience and knowledge gained. You just can’t go wrong understanding his philosophy. He won’t steer you wrong… ever..him, his school and all of his staff are the most down to earth, good people out there. I highly recommend taking any of his classes!
Could you please provide a link on where we can purchase the Tyvek that you speak of? I have tried Amazon but I really don't know what I'm looking for. Thank you
Dave, Jim and I are praying for you, your family, the Pathfinder School, Instructors, and everyone within the area of the derailment. May the Lord keep you all safe from the hazardous air and water
I'm trying to find it, but I can't seem to find the Tieback (Tiebeck? sp) ground cloth on your website. Any chance I could get a direct link to that, Sir?
For hammock camping, I reccomend bringing an extra ultralight hammock. Once your primary hammock is complete, hang the extra one underneath it and on the same straps. You'll have a dry/clean place to put stuff and can reach all of it while laying in your hammock. They are incredibly small, light and cheap. Smoothing it.

I’m sure everyone would love to see a solo two night camp with that set up.
27:42 *Only Dave can put the fear in you concerning "Hateful Roses"!* 😁
*Great video, Dave. Loved it!*
Excellent presentation on the pack and methodology for packing in general. It's a great pack but what I enjoy most is those mega side pockets! Those are the best.

Great video! We need Americans like this to share the essentials of basic survival. Protect this man at all costs!
It's a good backpack. I used mine on a 3 day, 30 mile camping trip on the eagle rock loop in Arkansas.
Your packing the main compartment with the gear you'll need last on the bottom. Then when shutting down camp you reverse the packing process. Great video Dave 👌. Also, luv your camp kitchen videos.

Can’t wait for these packs to come back in stock!! Thanks for all the great info! You’ve been pivotal in my outdoor journey!
I love Dave's wisdom and all the knowledge shared throughout the years.

This is the video I wanted as soon as I saw Corporal’s backpack! Thank you, Dave!
30 minutes of video and no commercials awesome 😎
Even though I moved to Florida from Ohio I still love to watch your channel
Bushcraft mixed with ultralight thru hiker I love it!!
Great video. Would use garbage bag inside to keep sleep system dry. The brain of the pack could be separated and used as a haversack. Nice system
you never ceases to amazeme good toppick

Such amazing information! It's an incredible service that you put this kind of information out for free!
Would love to see a 60L+ hiking pack with some of these ideas implemented

Been a while, still giving sound advice. Thank you sir
Great video Dave! Well thought out, but did not expect anything less from you! Thanks for sharing!!!

Great Idea !!! Really great Outdoor Man.

Love the idea of the tyvek sheet. I managed to find a gum blanket on ebay that i use!
Awesome! Great video and info!
Nice informative video. I love my scout pack and I’m always changing up how I pack it from season to season as well
How does pack fit you. How tall are you, will it work with six footer?
I’m definitely going to be looking into buying one of these bags in the very near future. I’ve literally gotta survive a brain surgery first. Once I’m recovered this pack will be my gift to myself.🤙
Great vid Dave ! I'm still hooked on the Marine ILBE pack , but I'm looking for a new one !

I cut off all the Molle webbing I didn't need and took off the top cover to lighten it up a bit. If it's raining or snowing I just put a pack cover or my poncho over it.
Loving those colors!!!! Great informational video and I'm sold on that pack!!!!!
Been following this Man for years! I live outdoors in a tent permanently all year round this is the only knowledge i need
Great video. Always learn something new every video.
Thank you Dave.
Love to see your kit set up along with advertising the new pack. Really puts things in perspective. Great as usual Dave. Thanks
that was actually great information.
Great video great explinations. The only thing. It's induction. Conduction sure but induction is more accurate
Great colors! I'll have to pick one up.
Thanks Dave
A very nice pack! Couldn't find a better guy to design ii for sure. The only thing I MIGHT change is to put some ILBE straps on it. Thanks again Dave!
Great video, thanks for this great information.
Awesome video!
Awesome video.
Nice designed backpack from Pathfinder, everything they make is top quality,u can't find better made bush equipment. I like this pack.👍☘️😎
Dave, adoro seus videos, grande abraço aqui do Brasil. 👍👍👍👍👍

can someone tell me what the sheet he mentions at 25:00 is? Is it tie back? Tibec? Can't find anything on google.
Need help. Trying to figure out the name of this black sheet ( 25:00), for preventing punctures in air mattress. Thanks!
Good stuff Dave. I see a lot of considerations I used when backpacking. Do you keep your personal hygiene close to your first aid pouch? I was out sometimes 4+ days and that is an important item. A digging stick in place of a trowel for those important moments.
When I first saw "RV" on the board, I got excited. Recreational Vehicle, sounds easy enough!LOL....Wrong!
Great video as always
get the portawipe tubes. They are fantastic.
Hi David. I am french and I don't understand what is the "sheet of back tie" you talk about. Is it a trash/garbage bag?I can't find any translation. thanks for everything you do!
TYVEK
Great video!!!!!
The saw is probably the best thing that came along for outdoor activity in a long time lot safer for people to use. Takes a long time to master a ax. An ax can and will remove toes.
Where are you sourcing that dark tyvex? I've always only seen it in white.
bushes, brambles, and thorns ... Where the rabbits wouldn't go!

Well thought out pack!
@david canterbury could you make the pick in one color like olive green in the future?
Hi David love what you do but have a question. What would be different for say a long distance trail hike of say 2,000 miles like Appalachian Trail or a long term big out situation?

Excellent video Dave!

Dave, Jim and I are praying for you, your family, the Pathfinder School, Instructors, and everyone within the area of the derailment. May the Lord keep you all safe from the hazardous air and water
Outstanding video! Waiting on this backpack to come in to order it. Thank you for all you do with SRO.
Can anybody tell me how this pack will fit a six- footer? Backs don't always work well as 1 size fits all and dave is about average height. Thanks!
One of those rollup cheap cutting boards could lay flat against that stiffener pad and not add much more weight or bulk. Great video!
Where do you get black tyvek like that?
Great to hear someone as knowledgeable as Dave downplay the stupid "rule of 3's". I've always thought it was dumb and vague.
I'm trying to find it, but I can't seem to find the Tieback (Tiebeck? sp) ground cloth on your website. Any chance I could get a direct link to that, Sir?
..... dang .... I just bought a Condor 3 day assault pack. Wish you would have posted this 1 week ago
Great Video, thank you!
I wonder if there's a water bottle that will nestle with that 32 oz. Bail pot ? And will it fit in the bottle carrier ?
Thank you for all your hard work. I have enjoyed your videos.
