    Yeah. I've been sold on Moras for 40 years. Love them, especially considering the "knife per dollar" metric. Also love the look of the new ash handle knives. But, as you and everybody else aresaying, for that price, premium steel is a must.

  • @muhsinbustillo
    @muhsinbustillo Рік тому +49

    Mora really needs to remember why people love them.
    If they want to charge premium, they need to deliver premium.
    Use premium stainless and carbon steels--Banging on an Ashwood handle and changing aesthetic does not, under any circumstances, make that price make any sense.
    I don't know why they assume having an expose tang or bolt on scales would bump the price up any more than a little.

    • @2adamast

    • @muhsinbustillo

      @@2adamast overpriced trendy gear isn’t why people love Mora. They’ve toyed with more expensive items sure.
      The Garberg for instance, while overpriced, atleast delivered amazing quality, atleast for the Carbon-not that the stainless wasn’t great, and the steel choice was an upgrade from prior stainless options.
      I’m just saying this happened to Gerber too, albeit in a different way, thinking that making something simply look cool or trendy merited ridiculous prices.
      Mora already ALREADY has a loyal, die-hard fan base, and they have nothing stopping from producing premium prices WITH premium products (other than maximising profits) This line-up would feel like a slap in the face to loyal fans who were waiting on the next great thing to spend their money on from Mora.

  • @ryancoke9

    That’s pretty wild!! I’ve owned many mora knives over the years. And the big draw was they cost and the reliability you get. I love spending $12 CAD for a companion that gets used hard and if it breaks or I lose it, it’s simple enough to replace. I opted for the mora black a few years ago at $100 CAD and I thought it was pricey for what it was but I still enjoyed it very much. This however is ridiculous.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  Рік тому +10

      Ya, ash wood is the cheapest hard wood, and they are using a steel they have already perfected on $15 knives. $15 x3 and that would be understandable and give a health profit margin you would think.

    • @J.sh_CDN
      @J.sh_CDN Рік тому +2

      @gideonstactical I thought the Garberg was quite an expensive knife for Mora to sell, but now I realize that you could buy two Garbergs for the price of these Ash knives, and epoxy a wood handle on both of them....
      The Kansbol I did pick up, as it was roughly twice the price of a Companion where I live. Figured the wider blade, better handle, more complex grind, and thicker tang made it worth the Prince increase. Skipped the Garberg though and I'll skip these ash knives too.

This lineup of Ash Wood Mora's for me will stay on their shelves at their current prices. Like you said, the 511 and 546 at $9.00 and the Garberg being now well under the $100.00 mark, it's a no brainier, these and only these will be my first choice in a Mora knife and not the Ash Wood collection.

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 Рік тому +4

    Quite right. Way too high a price for 12c27 steel. BPS and Beavercraft can put a wooden handle on a full tang knife without charging more than $40. Mora would have to bring more to the table, such as D2, Magnacut or at least some kind of 154CM steel. And maybe a wood that is more fine grained than ash. They could spend $5 more for some deep dark hardwood, charge $10 and still be under $100. I guess they are front loading the tooling up costs, which sucks. And now this! Back to the Aaron in the studio.

      The point of a line of knives like this, from a company like Mora, is that some people will buy them. They realize that though nice knives, there is approximately zero difference in usefulness of these expensive knives, compared to their less expensive ones. They realize it is a bit of a luxury good, and that more price conscious shoppers concerned with cost of living increases, can supply not buy them. They older models still are available, and they still work just fine. This line of knives are for people in higher income brackets, or for those in lower income brackets who are a bit foolish. They want the money from people for whom not just the prettier handle is a plus, but from those who feel the higher price also a plus. J

      They seem to be really aiming for the hippy/hipster/ environmentalist crowd, putting emphasis on the recycled steel and renewable nature of the handle.

There are a videos out there abusing these cheap knives and still have a hard time destroying them. The Garberg is already stretching it price point wise because the Bushcraft series does the same with more or less the same durability. That said i use 546 for household task like cutting cardboard and their fishing line knives for fishing. The Garberg with 14C28 i put in my bugout bag. For carbon steel knives i got Terava knives bought from Varusteleka which are imho better than the carbon steel Garberg. They cost 45€ for the 11cm knive plus around 40€ for a leather or kydex sheath.

And yes this is on a whole different level however Mora used to have high priced collectors pieces, now discounted, and some rather pricey steak knife sets. I am betting with taglines like “Made with genuine recycled Swedish Steel” that is what this is … their approach to a “true collector piece that is the heart of Swedish heritage but with modern and ecological flare!” I doubt if the expect these to be “users!” With that said am I going to run out and collect then all! I still think they’re charging too much for what they’re giving you on those Ashwood handled knives, but that’s my opinion. I agree at your price point that you’re talking about. They would be probably more accepted. They’re about $100 too much.

    Discovered a little more data. Apparently, Mora is labeling all their stainless steels as (recycled Swedish stainless steel). Both the basic 511 with 12c27 and the Garberg with 14c28n. So not sure which steel is being used on these Ash Wood knives, which is not good for mora not being clear on which steel is being used. I am sticking to my original comments, that at twice the price of a Garberg for the same size knife, even if it is 14c28n is too high. What do you think?

      Those benchmade Puukkos and Leukkos are really cool, and not so terribly prices in Canada even, seeing them for 200/230$ respectfully, not even taking into account sales and such. I believe I've seen the puuko as low as $150 Canadian.
      For a super steel and nice leather sheath, it's still less expensive than these moras.
      The Leuko looks like an awesome knife, I'm glad you are happy with yours

    I own quite a few moras (most are sub-$50, barring the Bushcraft Black I bought at launch), I use em, abuse em, and go on with my day. I love the look of the new moras, but there is no way I would want to use them to their full potential. I mostly use ESEEs now (4, 3, RB3, Izula II, and CR2.5), and though they are expensive (relatively speaking), I have no problem using them to their full potential (plus some) due to ESEE's warranty being bullet proof. Though, to be fair I pass on a lot of knives now-a-days because of the warranty. I'd love a TOPS Bull Trout, but you ever read the warranty page for a TOPS knife? no thanks.
    Either way, kind of disappointing price for these new knives. No way in hell they'd beat my ESEEs even at the same price, let alone at +$ 50-100

      you'll just hate them anyway. I own a garberg but it's slippery handled, heavy, and I just don't use it. I own 3 companions and I just use one of those. Lightweight yet amazing performance and they don't break even under torturous methods, they also have way more comfortable handles

    They look sooo good, and I reckon the idea is for people to purchase the whole collection, but agree that the price point is mental. Having said that, I might get me the smaller knife, feels like a nice heirloom sort of thing to get the kids to transition to adult knives.

    These knives are nice but the price is absurd indeed. You can get Swedish Casström knife e.g. Lars Fält for 182€ (sleipner steel) or even basic Fällkniven for about 200€. I value both of those higher quality than these or any Moras. Finnish Marttiini (Rapala) took even worse route and decided to move whole knife manufacturing to Estonia (for cheaper mf costs) but same time raised their retail prices. Completely insane.

    I would love to see some of the Caftier youtubers take the price of these new Moras and try to build as many similar knives as you could.
    Try some full tang models from other companies, and make some basic scales, and either patina or paint the blade, take some non full tang Moras and stick them into some wood and do the same patina/paint with the blade.
    I think you could get quite a few very nice blades for that price

    Mora's big problem is that they struggle to make non-budget knives at a good price point.
    I am a huge fan of Mora, I own five, and I have studied their manufacturing process. Their issue is that they specialise in making HUGE runs, of budget knives, using automation, and with absolute maximum efficiency. Whats more, they are made in Sweden, paying grown up wages, and not outsourced to somewhere like Asia or El Salvador.
    What this means on the ground is that if you buy one of their mainstay, budget knives, you get maximum bang for your buck, but once you head up to their more niche runs, and higher end knives, you start to get diminishing returns, until you quickly reach a point where your money is better spent elsewhere.
    This really hit home when I treated myself to a Mora Pathfinder (Mora Black Tactical). Its a great knife, and everything awesome about Mora, with a longer, thicker blade. However, it came with a crap nylon sheath, and clocked in at about 90% of the price of a Condor Moonshiner. High end Moras are not value for money, they are luxury items you are buying for the brand.
    I am glad they are listening to their critics, but nobody wanted this. They wanted a full tang mora, not some luxury top tier limited edition Mora with ash handles and corby bolts.

    Great video format. Truly enjoyed. There is some marketing miscalculation on Mora's side, really. I mean, add 60 euro and you can buy a wonderful Roselli knife. Which is a totally different and I'd say premium level. Or it's a marketing "clickbait"? Like everyone is now talking about Mora going f...ng bananas and then Mora "hears" its fans and drops the price. A little weird, though.

    But at $250 we're firmly in high-end production or even semi-custom territory here. Why would anyone spend this kind of money for mystery steel when you could get any flavor of super steel for less?
