I have the theme of not judging people for what they are. You should judge them for WHO they are and what they’re like as a person. It’s in a fantasy setting in which mages were once integrated into society, but because a few of them abused their power, the people decided to hunt them down and kill them.
One of my main characters’ parents have been killed by mages.
Another main character is a mage herself and she’s trying to stay hidden.
They both believe the all of the mages/humans are evil, generalising them.

Your main character's mother was a mage hunter that found him out (after they were in a relationship obviously) and turned him in/killed him herself. Now the mother has a complex about it because she finds out she's pregnant and the kid ends up being born a mage. She can't bring herself to give up the child and parents them in hiding/exile. In order to save face, she made up a story about the father being hunted down and leaves out the part where she turned him in.

I’m 14, I wrote my first book at the age of eleven. It sucked, naturally, the world was a jumbled mess and boring, the characters were one dimensional and there was no internal conflict at all; it sucked. But, that was to be expected, I was eleven. Now thanks to your videos I understand writing so much better and my characters actually feel like real people. Thank you so much Abbie, I’m finally happy about writing again and I’m really excited about this new story!

Yo, pog. I had a similar experience but my sister was into writing and since I was a younger sibling and was eight, I wanted to be like her so I wrote my first story then. I’m now eleven and I understand writing much better than I did at eight. I will never get good at writing short stories. Like, someone explain to me how to make a story so short have as much effect as a long story with everything you can’t do?

I found it funny when I got to the "what is your character's misconception about the world?" because I'm writing from a petty criminal's PoV and funny enough, in my story he is actually proven right at every turn:
People are stupid, check. People are low, check. People are gonna let you down, check.

Thank you for everything you do, where I study Creative Writing degrees arent really well structured and not enough funding goes into them to better the curriculum so you end up taking little workshops offered on campus that are amazing but you dont have enough time for everything there is to learn and the class size is 20 or more people so one on one feedback from the teachers is a very rare opportunity that is necessary. I'm so happy I was able to find your channel because here the face 2 face feedback is not necessary because of how well you explain the science behind writing stories that mean something.
Your videos took me out of my writers "block", I hadn't written anything i was happy with for a long time and your advice made my own courses at college make soooo much more sense, and i was able to create stories that matter to me and that im proud of. Thank you so much for that. I know 5 buck will never cover how much you're helping aspiring writers, but it's what I can help with right now. The way you explain each part of the story structure so in depth and so different from other videos I’ve seen. It's not necessarily something you're conscious of? Like what did you want to be before the world told you it wasn't possible? You're probably still longing to be that person, and find a way to make it work. Like if you wanted to be a superhero when you were a kid for example, you might still be trying to be a hero in ways that don't use superpowers, but not be so aware of doing this.

The theme of A Series of Unfortunate Events is really interesting because it turns the 'truth' part upside down. The truth in that story is that most of the time everything won't work out, the lie that the characters believe is that everything will work out for them. And their journey is that through all the experiences they have they discover that people are willing to help but fail most of the time.

There was a story I really enjoyed that used the "belief is a lie". The first chapter started with the protagonist in his own little world and it was beautiful and perfect, only to be destroyed by a race of aliens. He got rescued by the military and enlisted into their ranks to get vengeance against these aliens. Later in the story, he learned this was a lie the military used to motivate him to obey, and the "aliens" in his memory were actually the military itself, and the real memory had been overwritten by them through their enlistment process. He eventually came to terms with this and used his position to make a last stand against the aliens to protect a town of civilians the military had abandoned. It was thoughtful and moving, and it made me fall in love with the sacrificial hero trope.

“A story is not about what happens; it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. You remember a story, not because of the stuff that happens-you remember a story because of the the journey that the characters went on internally and the truth that they learned about the world… It was actually invented to mean something, to impart truth to us, to help us avoid pain and danger, to enlighten us to better understand ourselves and others.”
If you came up with that on your own, you need to coin that. I agree completely, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone say it like that.

My story that I currently have has 107 pages (I know, it's sad that I have to delete that), but I think because you just explained to me how to form my characters, I now understand that mine were a total mess. Thank you Abby, because my story just got an upgrade! :D
P.S. I think I'm gonna buy your story when it's out! Sounds amazing! (Really)

For such a simple and sensible solution, I really needed to hear you spell out the truth of the story and the lie of the character. I've struggled for a few years in how to fit character growth, plot, and theme together. Never thought to really use the latter inverted to build the former, and I feel so dumb for not coming to that solution on my own. Thank you so much for these videos! They're great food for thought and you have a nice video personality that's easy to watch and listen to :)

I'm starting my first ever serious book writing and you're videos are so helpful! I finally found my theme, and its "There is a difference between what is deemed right by the government and what is truly right" which is perfect since my main character is the daughter of two very important government officials

Keep in mind internalised unquestioned beliefs don't need to be based on a single past event - they may have been drilled into a child's head like a constant drop on a stone, just like the "again and again" reinforcement you describe. The problem with the latter is: People no longer even realise at what moment in time they adopted this belief, because there is no single moment in time. This is how semantic memory works. When have you learned that London is the capital of the UK? 😉

I have taken an interest in MBTI and Enneagram recently and, I agree, they are very useful tools for creating varied and multi-dimensional characters!
Especially if the POV characters are different from us, or different from one another.
And I feel like several questions of the therapy session are more or less directly related to the character's enneagram type.
I also think that MBTI and Enneagram are complementary, one is about how our brain naturally works, our functional strength and weaknesses, and the other is more about personality per see, our values, fears, and desires.

Interesting, I never tink about the theme (or truth) of my story before I start writing it. I've tried, but it's not for me, I get bored, because I don't think of my stories that way. Considering theme makes me feel like I'm preaching, and there's nothing hat annoys me more than a preachy book 😅

Then don't preach - DISCOVER. Ask questions to FIND the truth. Confront different points of view in your story (represented by different characters), and let the reader decide whom to side with ;>

Wonderful video! I'm loving the plotting along with you and getting so excited for November! As if you don't have enough to think about for your own novel, I'm having a hangup thinking about my character's lie/misbelief. Very vague synopsis: a woman goes through a life threatening illness and injury, and the story is about her struggle and journey. Her lie is about how she'll never be well enough to live the life she has always known and loved. How do I incorporate her lie in her backstory when its something that's recently happened to her that is driving the plot? I'd greatly appreciate your feedback or direction to a forum/space to converse about this more! Thanks and happy Preptober!!

I know that judging a person based on the way of looks is a step to assuming a bias to their personality without understanding them……but that goes on in the character’s journey where they encounter oppositions.
