CK, was just there at Bukit Bintang! Every visit to KL over the last 20 years includes a couple trips to W.A.W. Must haves...fried rice, so good. Butter prawns, not the one with the floss eggs, other one. A steamed grouper. And of course the bbq chicken wings! They should sell them by the bucket load. Thanks for your vids, using them on our way through Kuching, Ipoh, Melaka, and JB. I have to go home and diet! 🐷
Let me give you a proper history introduction.. The name Jalan Bukit Bintang was taken in conjunction with a hill about 50m high that was located near Kampung Dollah which was a Malay village once upon a time.. Kampung Dollah is no longer there and replaced by Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah and Jalan Barat. Jalan Bukit Bintang is 3.4km long starting from the intersection of Jalan Raja Chulan and ending at Jalan Pudu. (Walking down the Pavillion). In the past, Bukit Bintang was a residential area. At night, the residents relax outside the house, releasing the tiredness of working during the day while witnessing the beauty of nature and the stars scattered in the sky. At that time, there was no entertainment and night activities like the atmosphere in Bukit Bintang today. Such was their life then. Hill to see the stars. Over time the residents referred to their settlement as Bukit Bintang and it remains until today. In 1945, Jalan Bukit Bintang was the only street that had entertainment, shops and hawker food. Back then, the street featured a famous cabaret, cultural shows, Malay joget, Chinese opera shows, wayang, ballroom dances like rhumba, foxtrot and tango, and amusement fun fair elements like a merry-go-round and ferris wheel, to name but a few. Low Yow Chuan built the Capitol Hotel in 1948, which was later sold and is now called the Malaysia Hotel. In 1947, Hong Kong media mogul Shaw built the famous and popular Bukit Bintang Amusement Park, or simply known as BB Park. This entertainment centre was where Sungai Wang Plaza is located today and should not be confused with the new BB Park next to the Federal Hotel. Around the 80s and 90s, Bukit Bintang experienced problems with prostitution and illegal human trafficking. So the government took the initiative to enforce the areas of Bukit Bintang, Changkat Bukit Bintang, Changkat Thambi Dollah, Imbi and Jalan Alor to be raiding areas for prostitutes and now prostitution activities are reduced. In the late 1980s, Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay (the one that mentioned in your video) proposed a rejuvenated retail cluster in Kuala Lumpur. He started retail developments through a conglomerate YTL Corporation and branded the area as Bintang Walk.
