The Aga Saga - Part One - Doing It Ourselves
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 жов 2024
- In this episode I make a start on preparing the 75 year old Aga ranger cooker for restoration, by exhuming its rusty remains from the depths of the chateau basement. Ryan lends a clumsy hand with the heavy lifting, while I talk all things technical when it comes to how a solid fuel Aga works.
Can all the parts can be salvaged ready for its new home in the Gardeners cottage?
Keep watching to find out.

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.
Ryan is a wonderful friend. I just have to say that AGA is beautiful!!
Ryan is such a kind person. What a wonderful friend..
I agree he is so nice. Watching his videos now.
@@marymcneill7438 he's probably an axe murderer off cam
LOL! Just love the comedy element Ryan brings every time !
Lol, i was waiting for the ,,To me To you, comedy sketch as they were carrying the door. , just love it all.
You should check out Ryan's Channel as well. Quite fun like to see his character for more than a couple of seconds
I love how you automatically and politely say, “If you’ll come in, I’ll show you exactly what I’m talking about”.
It made me smile because you know that if we could, I expect that all of us would love nothing better than to walk into what’s probably going to be the most beautiful little gardeners cottage we’ll ever see.
Can you imagine how quickly it would fill up and how long the line of people waiting outside would be?
By the end of this year, your channel may very well exceed a quarter of a million people on the planet that are delighted at the prospect of you sitting snugly in your chair in the evening, sipping a glass of wine and chatting to us about your day.
That would be so precious 😻
Vera Sileikis For sure I would be lining up!! 😍
Vera Sileikis Well said!
So true, sure I’d love to come in, ta 😁
trully. cant wait to see what he does to it :)
Aww...Ryan is the greatest friend, always willing to give a hand if needed💕
Is he just a "friend" though?
catchyenxon lol that’s what I’m saying
>biting my lip
I wish I had a friend like Ryan. He's the best and so kind x
He likes the limelight haha
Ryan is Halarious, love all your play and goofy Michael..As well as inspiration to build a greenhouse, To have your life. As such a beautiful boy.
I really enjoyed listening to the talk about the aga I think I could have listened to aga info all night
This has been an amazing day, Stephanie, Dan, The Pethricks and Michael all posting vlogs one right after another, how could life get any better?
yassss 😄💛😄💛
I watch 90% UA-cam videos now, mostly all of theirs, lol...who needs cable TV?
Becky Baur exactly! Leland is wonderful too!
@@flyingeaglewoman8682 I am so sorry for all the tough happening over there. 🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏 You are right, this is our escapism.
Jill Scott thank you. I removed my icky post... stress...
literally the most polite struggle I've ever watched
Definitely a job for steel capped boots, Ryans a good friend.
This sounds amazing, what a talented carpenter, I'd love to see his house, it must be a master peice ❓👍😄👏👏👏👏👏
Can't wait till the AGA is in ❗😄💞
"The AGA SAGA" 🤣🙃😄🙃😇👍👏
OMG, the AGA is soooo heavy!!!
My dad bless him was an AGA cooker fitter for years and years , what he didn’t know wasn’t worth knowing xxxx
The tongue and groove timber will look much sharper than lime rendering 👍love the stove colour....
He said tongue in groove 😯😯😯
There is a type of dolly called a stairclimber. It is ingeniously designed to easily climb up and down stairs, carrying heavy objects.
Michael is in love with this AGA oven, but I don’t think Ryan gives a hoot about that stove lol!
Chatty Kathie LOL and Michael is walking too fast. The front person carrying something heavy is trying to hurry but the back person can’t walk properly because the item is in the way- there’s not sufficient legroom. Slow is the way to go. I don’t think that helps a Ryan love the stove! But I love it. genius design.
Make me smile.
Poor Ryan! He was just at the height to hit the ceiling, having to bend when carrying stuff, which then made him hit his back, but he just kept smiling, bless him! What a bloke!
No question about it, you guys are going to be stars. I watched every moment of both parts of the AGA Saga. I didn't even think about fast forwarding, and I don't cook. Michael, there is nobody on UA-cam who could have taken that topic and made it so interesting, nobody but you! And, kudos to Ryan too, you guys work very well together.
I have never seen so much joy and enthusiasm for an oven! Michael lights up and smiles so much when he talks about this aga.
Either he or Ryan could have a hernia by the time this is done. That is a real labor of love.
Never knew a cooker could be this interesting now i want one for myself.
What a great friend you have in Ryan. You are fortunate to have all of his help Michael. 🙏🏻🙋♂️
Your passion for the AGA is commendable. Well done!
Ryan you are a good friend to help out and to listen to all Michael’s little stories. Benjamin your lucky to have just carried the iPhone! Good job all
“We have to look after our bodies”........🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ryan is SUCH a good friend! I am so impressed by your depth of knowledge on the Aga and your ability to troubleshoot, it was so interesting to hear how the mechanics of it work...it's going to be fabulous in the cottage! The door looks absolutely gorgeous, the color is beautiful.
I am always amazed with how much knowledge Michael has about the chateau and all the old furniture, decorations, and appliances. He could be a historian!
Michael, your choice for the walls sounds perfect and lm enjoying learning about the workings of agas too. Always loved the look of them but it’s so interesting hearing about the finishes and operations. Have a great week - always a treat to see Ryan as well 🕊❤️
This is better than huge TV productions. It all seems so honest and genuine. Everyone is so charming and friendly. Thank you for keeping this up.
I love watching you working on your cottage, it’s so relaxing to see and hear your cheerful chatting. And what a great friend Ryan is helping to move everything!
I enjoy, when you are Ryan are together, always have a laugh..getting more and more excited to see the finished cottage..take care
Its so good to be back at the cottage and see the progress, I missed the cottage.. Michael you are a wealth of knowledge love listening to all you share.. so excited to see progress. Totally understand the paneling and it will look beautiful. Love to your mum she is so supportive on facebook...
Do u live in a Tiny House?
@@barbibutton9619 Not yet was about to start before covid. I am waiting finances now. I am going to do a youtube channel if I can. I love vintage and old things and love Michaels taste.. I will be having antique or vintage elements. LIke a mini chateau haha My dream has always been to restore an old building and I might one day I could live in my tiny while I restore .. Who knows what life has instore but we can all dream right? Do you?
Your Aga is going to look stunning inside of your cottage! x
I love how you are so passionate about the AGA cooker - so good to see
Hi Michael and Ryan what a find to make one good one out of two not bad it will look so good when it’s all done and you also have done your research about it which will come very handy and it will look great in the cottage
Loved this, really enjoyable. Love seeing you and Ryan together. So entertaining.
I recall in the 60's both sets of my grandparents having an Aga for cooking and then later on my parents had one. In the winter, I used to sit on top of one of the top covers with my feet on the towel rail to warm myself up...bliss. This brought back very fond memories 😊 thank you
That kitchen wall was so beautiful & cottage like that you showed us. It is going to look fantastic.
Love that you have the old cooker. It will be beautiful when all restored!
I am Dominican 🇩🇴 and I absolutely love what you're doing with the place, it's inspiring! And the place is stunning 😍
Can’t wait to see the AGA cooker and transformation of the cottage.
I think Ryan is the new breakout chateau star. Yes that Ryan.
I think Ryan is very funny
@@carinamatthysen2976 I agree he also has a natural on-camera personality which is very rare, Micheal has the same type of presence.
Someone with a personality
I recall my mum sending me out to get the coke to top her rayburn up, it was wonderful. Warmed the huge room, warmed our water and cooked our food. Cooked cakes like no other cooker and on cold mornings I would get my toasting fork and do my toast at the open door to the rayburn fire.
I think the cottage is going to be so beautiful. Can’t wait to see the wall, the kitchen and the AGA in place 😊 Looking forward to the next chapter in the saga 👍
A very good product to use on Aga enamel, is the original (for wood) spray Pledge, I used it for years on a 4 oven Aga on the doors, body and black enamel top. It contains silicone, so when you drip bits on the top, it is easy to wipe straight off. (Beware of hot milk spills, one of the worst for the enamel.) In fact I use spray Pledge like WD40 on window sashes, locks, sliding door runners, just about everything! My go-to best all round product. Men think I am bonkers!!!
Welllll.... they MAY think it's not a good idea ( me too I'm afraid ) bec. when the heat makes the Pledge evaporate that vapor gets on to the FOOD! And honestly there's nothing in Pledge you actually want in yr food . 😳
@@NotChefCook I was recommended to use this by an Aga engineer; not aware of any vapour. Also, you obviously buff it with a separate clean cloth.
Wow...who would have known. TY

@@Tony-InLosAngeles Been using it for the last 70 years on antique (dark) furniture (wax on softwoods) and the furniture and I are in robust good health!
I’m getting a heart rush regarding your cottage news❣️❣️
Too bad I’m not getting too excited about the kitchen window blinds I’m supposed to be putting up today❣️❣️🥴
So happy for you.
Seeing your cottage again is exciting, Michael. Your explanations are easy to understand.
Ryan = "no pressure then" and " lets take this one step at a time" - he's a real card! 😍😆
Ryan is such a good friend. I can not wait to see the aga restored.
This is going to be a labour of love Michael getting the Aga back in one piece!!!😲
Your chateau and land is absolutely beautiful. I love your cottage. Can't wait to see it all done. I always get excited when I see that you've posted a video. Thank you for sharing from Washington State
I used to be a private chef working for large country houses in the UK (Mrs Patmore, Downton Abbey) they are wonderful to work with, and often have there own little quirks, but make the best toast ever! Loved listening to your knowledge Micheal. Always stopped for a chat with the Aga man when he came to do the service, he had some great stories.
The door looks great! Excited to see the cottage transform with the Chateau!
I never knew I needed an AGA, and now I feel like I do. It is beautiful.
I really enjoyed this episode, I'm an aga owner myself, I fell in love with it during a holiday in Edinburgh. Till then I tried to purchase one, but it has been a long journey...because I live in Norden Italy... in the end, I finally achieved my dream, and now I can say it was all worth it! The only concern is that I would retire in the UK at some point and it would be an issue to take it with me. I hope you will share some recipes in the future Michel, you are so talented, would be lovely😊💕
Good job! Looking forward to seeing your AGA cooker restored...
I love Ryan. He’s such a good friend!😊
The Aga-ny & l'extase, or 2 Britons observed by able and patient French cameraman. Many thanks to all involved.
Well done boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love from Vermont
This is going to look great when it's put back together. I can't wait to see the final outcome.
The most beautiful chateau.. I absolutely love it!
Briliant Aga..very jealous..you are lucky to have such lovely friends to help you..slowly but surely your cottage is coming into being..its nice to get your dreams coming true..love to youxx
Oh I’m tired just watching you two -Ryan’s a really hoot! 😁
Soo happy you uploaded!! Don't mind the hateful comments, every video is a joy!!
Yes you just have to delete them. We don't want to read them. Just strange people. I appreciate that people make videos to make us happy.
love that you're finally doing this! I find it so interesting :)
Micheal...the front door looks AMAZING!
Whew! What a lot of work, lugging those AGA parts around.
It's just beautiful.
Can't wait for Part 2.
Much Love, from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦... Keli💖
Hello Michael so glad to hear things are going to start happening in the cottage. So excited to see things start to happen.
I agree with previous comments. It's nice to be back at the cottage. I love the work you are doing there. And I also love all the info you are sharing
Don’t forget Selmar has a channel as well. So...Michael, Pethericks, Dan, Stephanie, Selmar....life is good!
Carol Kelly and also Maries florals and Tomas Q
What is his channel called?
Ryan has one also. The life of Ryan. Tomaz Q also has one...lol🤣🤣🥀🥀🥀
Selmar’s channel is Selmar Ruin on you tube
You are a good friend Ryan. Thanks for helping Michael lift that heavy cast iron.
I sure wish I could of given you a hand in carrying those heavy pieces. I love & enjoy viewing your knowledgeable videos. Thank you and please, please becareful. You guys are the best, keep your sweetness. -Cindy
Thanks for sharing, journey is just so wonderful!!!
The way your artistic mind works and the historical mind as well is just awesome, I see how your parents and family, have truly allowed your education to soar, love them for that. Have a great week!!!
So excited to see the carpentry work done and the Aga all cleaned up and put back together!!
Enjoyed. Cant wait to see the work begin on the cottage! Exciting!
Its so cool the aga
That Aga lid in the thumbnail looks like a giant wheel of cheese. Yum! 🧀
You guys are the best of buddies! I could just sit and watch this on live stream 24/7! 🤩
Might want to look into getting some of those straps moving-people use to carry heavy and akward objects. 😊
Ohh ya, great idea!!!
And remove the soccer ball from behind the door!
Michael, you are so intelligent and talented. Figuring out the overheating of the AGA, taking things apart, putting them back together. I think you could fire small pottery beads and little vessels in it, like a kiln, it gets so hot. That's what I'd be doing. "Charred steak? No, don't eat it; Karin's been throwing her clay in there again, trying to replicate Woodland Era oxidation firing techniques..." Can't wait to see what else you've got to restore! And Ryan is a keeper! Bless his heart. The videographer too. He makes a good pirate!
If it weren't for Ryan, I might have skipped this one. A 26 minute episode of stove talk - a really nice stove, but a stove nonetheless. Otherwise I'm loving this channel, well done!
Now I know how an Aga works and now I see why they’re still so popular! 👍
He went mental for a minute,,, I'm Ryan,,, no,, I'm Ryan,,,, 😂
Had to laugh! Only a Brit!
Lol!
Did I miss an episode? I didn’t know that the door was hung, what glimpse I did see looks great!
Jones same here, last I saw it was being undercoated
yes it is on.
I had no idea I was interested in Agas.
But it was a fun, relaxed and entertaining video.
Absolutely fascinating and entertaining...Micheal is a wonderful teacher,,,I love learning how thw AGA works..
I know most all of us are screaming at you guys to open both doors and clear the pathways........
Bless
Listen to Ryan "We've got to take care of our bodies"! You can always cushion things you are moving with blankets and then move them on the dolly. I'm very glad you found your work gloves. Take care. It's all so exciting and it is coming together beautifully!
I could watch the two of you work all day......and, oddly enough, feel like I’ve accomplished something.
Ryan's a gem.
I love Ryan's attitude, it's so positive!
What a fascinating piece of cookery such great teamwork great story I love the cottage xoxo🐱🌹🌷🌈
I'm so happy to see how work at the cottage is going!!
Goodness Michael - your knowledge of Agas is amazing!
This vlog has boosted my mood! Thank you so much! Such a pleasure to watch and enjoy!💚
love the aga; great job. The Kitchen is going to look amazing! the best Aga we ever had was a 1950's solid fuel. It was filled with Fullers earth which was waaaay better than any of the other fillings we had on our other Aga's. two bags of coal a week was all it took to keep it in.. and heated all our water.. The new ones are not a patch on these old guys. We did have to get a new barrel but it was perfect after that was fitted. The other ones we had were new.. four door oven .. one gas and two oil. Had a new one four years ago when they produced a 'new' Heritage range which is great; but not as fab as the old 2 door..
Ryan a clumsy hand? I was surprised by that clumsiness in appreciating a willing helping hand. The generosity of Ryan brings human value to the story!
Just a bit of fun to spice up the video description. His help is invaluable.
My dear Michael you are a fountain of knowledge..... and if you don't know.. you find out ...well done you ..
I love watching Ryan help you do jobs...
I like Ryan's facial expressions in response to Michael's lessons about the make up of the cast iron oven parts- making a true effort at feigning interest. Funny guy.:)
Earnest needs a mini garage.
