Very proud that my mother's grandfather was a Union soldier, out of Missouri. He survived, and immigrated to California. I have a picture of he and his wife, as a very elderly couple.
My Father's side my great-grandfather was a confederate soldier who survived. My mother's side great-grandfather was a Union soldier. I'm pretty sure he was captured but survived the war. My great-grandfather on my father's side also on four slaves. One of his slaves lived to be 109 years old. We did research on our family history. I guess when his slaves we're told they were free, they did not want to leave. Also on my great-grandfather's deathbed family and his slaves all stood around his bed. From what we researched he treated them more like family than property. for somebody to live to be a hundred and nine they must have been treated well. Thank God.
Amazes me how you can still find bottles that you've never seen before. with all the holes you have opened up there are bottles that you still haven't seen that's amazing
Tom... Harkens me back to the day's of bottle digging (1960's) an old dump in Seattle daring back to its closure in the 1920's. Many a wagon load were taken, cleaned and sold, making us kids then, $20-$25. per dozen to the antique dealers! Dig~on!☺️👍🐿
Which dump? I dug a bit in the one under the (then) uncompleted overpasses and ramps near the north end of the Arboretum. There was another located, IIRC, between the Rainier Brewery and where the Kingdome was to be built. I intended to dig there after learning of the plans to build the stadium, but got too involved in helping my folks make a go of a small business in Port Angeles. I think I made one walk through that area after the preparatory demolitions had begun, early 1970s, but never got back to try any digging.
All of us who metal detect and bottle dig were drooling at those spurs man It's a dream to find a pair like that in a pit. Lots of beer bottles but still a rich pit. Kudos on an awesome dig!
I'm fascinated by the Gen. Sully expidedition in the 1860s in ND. The battle by Killdeer, the travel through the badlands into Montana. I always wonder if their camp sites along their travels still have artifacts. There are pictures and general locations of sites where some may be located exactly. It's really cool to see you dig up old military stuff from that era. Great video!
Great Video as always! You and your camera man teach more History more than my school I'm in 10th grade been digging up old stuff in same dump since last summer. U.S.A , U.S.A the freedom of history to preserve!
This is the first pit I have seen you in that you were not scooping bucket loads of detritus out of your way. Guess that shows the difference between civilian and military. Not sure if military had less waste due to their lifestyle of being on the move or less need for disposable glass items. Beer and medicine not withstanding. It is really cool to learn about history watching you literally digging up the past and hear the excitement when you find a piece for the first time. Much better than a dry textbook, stuck in a seat listening to an even drier professor. Thanks, Tom, for taking us along!
Tom nice you had the tractor to get that hole started. Amazing amount of bottles, loved the spurs and clay pipe. Nice dirt to dig in, it looked exhausting. Thanks for bringing us along on another adventure.👍😀👏
WOW! Great finds in this one! I love that it's obvious that your finds aren't "planted". Would love to find more like yours. Thank you for sharing your amazing digging adventures with us. Until the next one, have a great day 😊
Nice finds ! I can imagine the frontier army guys there. Drinking some beers. Hopefully they all got beers not just the officers. Very cool. Best one yet !!
WOW!!! What an awesome collection you dug up there🎉. Im subscribing to help you with your journey, i cant be personally be there to chip in for costs, but I can help support your channel, your doing a fine job young man 😎
Hi Tom, either these soldiers were very happy or very angry or more than likely very sleepy all with nice shiny boots, although depending on how many soldiers there were and how long they camped there its not so many beer bottles really, I know a man who would have drank more than that in a single week, cheers!!!
"I'll just throw this down here and in 135 years, someone will come along and dig up all this s#%t and think its cool". Said no one ever. Thanks for the fun videos
Gotta wonder what the treasure hunters of 2150 will be thinking when they dig up the rubbish mounds we're building these days. Not quite the same romance and wonder I think?
I prefer the digs where you never know what you are going to pull out of the dirt Tom but this was interesting because of the age of the stuff! wow and kudos to you for being able to figure out where that pit was! Can't wait for the next dig! take care
Nice dig Tom! This one had me scratching my head as all the beers dug and few whiskeys an no bitters??? All in all alot of bottles in this pit! Congrats Sir! 👍👍👍👍👍
It's great that this has been found and video documented. Otherwise it would still be in the ground. The most important thing to me is the people that were there and what they were doing, rather than the artifacts they left behind. I just wonder what inferences we could make from the detritus cast aside by the trowel. It would take significantly more resources to analyze, but we'll never know what information is lost. Maybe in the end, it's enough to know that soldiers were there for a while.
Hi 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 Tom and jake great to see your channel 😀 👍 yes they definitely like beer 🍺 and they kept there shoes 👞 polished 😊another good video both 😀 👍 all the 👌 best Andrew south wales uk 👌 👍 👏 😀 🇬🇧

You are quickly becoming my favorite UA-camr. I'm an army vet and a History guy from Campbell University. I would love to get my hands on a regular beer bottle with some good iridescence, maybe a nice boot polish bottle with panels, possibly some writing. All the time I've spent shining boots drinking and talking with fellow soldiers from all over the country. You brought back some happy memories. Thank you sir Both would be great for my mantle over my fireplace. Please look me up Karl Thoma, Wendell NC.
haha yeah some things never change! god i wish i could go back in time and see what it was like.. im sure someday people we be saying the same thing about your service! well thank you for serving and thanks for watching!!!
I found one of those beer bottles with the X on the bottom here in Lake County California it struck me as odd as well! I had never seen one before until then and never another one until I watched your video. 😎
Have you ever done a video that shows what you do with the bottles after the dig, like cleanup or restoration and your favorite finds and personal collection?
Tom, you should have a 1 day seminar for folks. From what you do to research to actually digging a site. I certainly would come and pay to learn.
Even having a large on line course. Do they have these outhouses in UK, we are so built up in UK.
He should tell us how he goes about getting permission
@@barrywainwright3391pretty sure he’s said that many times…. He asks the home/property owner. He’s said he gives them some of what he finds as payment
I agree that would fantastic
Sorry but it's Cavalry. Christ died on Calvary

The beer bottles look like they could have a 24oz. capacity.

I remember late 70's when the bottom fell out of the bottle business couldn't give them away so many every shop had some

Good one! Thanks for sharing.
It’s understandable the military endulged in spirits, the spurs are great, nice dig guys & nice weather we are experiencing snow here in N.Calif.!☃️
This is absolutely nuts! I guess it takes a lot of patience to find these pits. Amazing job saving this history! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! I can't imagine actually touching pieces of history like you do! A real adrenalin rush!
Fantastic finds. The spurs were awesome👌🏻 thanks for sharing.
Awesome finds ! Men get thirsty when at war!
Great pics of cleaned bottles. Love seeing the colors & flaws
Totally love the pipe bowl I'm watching from Ireland 🇮🇪
It’s a great project that a lot of people Love to do ; the fines you dig up are a part of history and a thrill isn’t it I hear it in your voice. Ty’s for the amazing videos lucky you what’s the best find you encounter ? 🍀
That was remarkable. You were very good digging. I don’t recall a single broken bottle. That’s badass.
I really find your channel entertaining and interesting. Great discoveries!
I could watch you dig and pull treasure for hours every day! ♥ This isn't more from Fort Pembina is it?
I could watch you forever. And I have!
Wow Tom the crap still looked fresh in some of that pit. Yikkies!!!
When the toilet paper is still there id say he probably can get a good whiff of what that hole was used for😬😂
Unbelievable! Those spurs my be my favorite thing you have ever found!!
Wow those spurs are quite a find ! Cool!!
Thanks
Cool finds. Those spurs were really cool though. How did the horse shoe turn out when cleaned up? Have a great day
Very cool presentation!

All these deep holes you dig... not even out of breath! Must be the fittest laddie on YT!
I always enjoy watching you just wondering what do you do with all the bottles
Always interesting
I would love it if you did a question and answer session.
Hey Tom great to fun. Where do i search on web for those old bottle art stickers...the art work is amazing. Thanks
you found some great bottles, you weren't in mud, and boy did the soldiers liked their beer 😅
Sweet finds
I was hoping you were going to post another one!
Fantastic
Great video. historic indeed.
Nice find.
Excellent
You really know the history on the bottles
Based on the width of the leather strapping you pulled out, it could be harness parts or martingale for McClellan Cavalry saddles.
Have you ever done a video that shows what you do with the bottles after the dig, like cleanup or restoration and your favorite finds and personal collection?
What a haul!!
Also would love to see a follow up on that bottle with the X on the bottom!
So cool
0:21 Blink twice if you're not being held against your will and forced to read to the camera.
What happens to the bottles and other artifacts you dig up?
The fun must be in the hunt. I can relate to that.
Nice!
Did you look on all of the leather for any metal military decorations. Some of that might be valuable.
