Chasing the Same Train for 200 Miles - Norfolk Southern SD80MAC Thomasville, NC to Westminster, SC

- We chased Norfolk Southern train 213 from Thomasville, NC all the way to Westminster, SC! These massive 80MAC locomotives had 20-cylinder EMD 710G prime movers, which generate a whopping 5,000 Horsepower and operate at a max speed of 900 RPMs. Only 30 EMD SD80MACs were ever produced, and none remain in service as of November 2022.
This unit was built for Conrail in February of 1996 as CR 4108. When Conrail split in 1998, CSX acquired the unit and renumbered it to CSXT 803, and later to CSX 4593. In 2016, it was purchased by Norfolk Southern and renumbered to NS 7220. Through all of the changes in ownership, it retained its original Leslie RS3L horn. Sadly, in 2020, NS sold NS 7220 and the other SD80MACs on their roster to Progress Rail to be scrapped.
Part 3 of a 3 part series, these videos are from a trip I took with friends to Thomasville, NC in 2018. We were able to chase this train over 200 miles since we were on our way back to Atlanta after spending the weekend in Thomasville. We filmed NS 7220 five times total: at "Five Row" in Thomasville, NC, Lowell, NC, Kings Mountain, NC, Lyman, SC, and Westminster, SC. Train 173 was following close behind 213 with a KCS ES44AC leading, so we waited for them at Lyman before they stopped to work the yard at Greenville. After catching up to 213 at Westminster for our final shot, we caught 237 and 222 meeting at Tugalo just after sundown.
