This was the first time the Soviet Anthem was played as the Russian anthem. And the last time Patriotic Song was played as anthem of Russia, this is a pretty sad day for me... But of course for the history's sake. This video is here with a 20 years anniversary!

They brang it back
Patriotic song was not so powerful and didn`t represent the power of russian state. But reality is also, that russian state had no power in the years after collapse of USSR, the whole structures of statehood were demolished. Because Russia was never a democracy and it was clear that everything will go wrong with decision to destroy a soviet system and replace it with a bad replica of western democracy. Now Russia is a stabilized totalitarian state again and soviet anthem goes really well with this direction.

Yeltsin thought it was finally gone for good, but it came back.

The West must've been pretty pissed the Soviet melody came back, but it's the prettiest one it makes me feel patriotic even tho I'm not Russian.

I understand how some people prefer the patriotic song, its truly a beautiful song, no complaints at all....But in all seriousness I prefer the original Soviet Era Tune because it establishes a sense of continuity between the USSR and the RF despite the fact that they are two different countries. The fact that it preserves Soviet tradition in the new modern era is truly beautiful to me. I can imagine that the Russians who lived through the hard 90s must've been happy and nostalgic to see their historic anthem making a strong comeback!
Does it preserve the Soviet tradition, or keep (some of) the people entrapped in it?
The anthem should most ideally be Grechaninov’s Anthem of Free Russia, or even, indeed, The Patriotic Song.

@@losabias4723 not sure that you're in a position to be making those statements. like any average person from the west you're repeating what western media outlets have been telling you your whole life, or you may have heard a defector saying that the USSR was hell and that they hate communism, those people represent a very small percentage of public opinion and aren't trustworthy sources .plenty of the other republics suffered greatly after the fall of the USSR and still aren't as economically robust as they once were, a strong chunk of the public opinion in those republics also suggests that living standards were better under communism , but you wouldn't know that because western mainstream media has been telling you the opposite narrative your whole life.

My mother is an ethnic Russian from Ukraine, she emigrated her to Slovenia (back then, it was still Yugoslavia) in the late 1970's, we've visited modern Ukraine multiple times, and she says the place was better under the USSR. This myth that everyone in every ex-USSR country other than Russia loathes Russia is just that - a Western myth.
Also, there's plenty of people in the West right now who loathe NATO and the EU.

This is not the Duma. State Duma is the lower house of Parliament. Here - Federation Council (upper house of parliament). But yes - State Duma also voted for new/old anthem. 379 yes, 51 against. Those you call democrats have occupied a marginal position since 1993, in Duma has always been dominated by Communist Party or Liberal Democrats (actually imperialists).
The Russian Assembly ceased to be a democratic body ever since Yeltsin deployed the tank in 1995 or so, imho.

Democracy is an illusion for fools, elected politicians are puppets of unelected elites and oligarchy and never make decisions against will of elites and for people. Especially in the West. At least in Russia people know Putin is really in charge and not a puppet, since his decision to invade Ukraine was definitely against will of elites who in 2022 lost everything in the West where they kept their money, business, properties and families

When im hear this Russian Federation Anthem now is like going back to 1944 in Soviet times during WW2 . That Anthem winned the Biggest War in Human History . And prefer the 1944 version over the 1977 , i like both but when we think Ww2 1944 is the Best , because it makes sense when we play Ww2 games or something like that .

The old ussr anthem was readopted as the anthem for Russia in the year 2000. The tune remained the same but lyrics changed.

Yes this was it, they voted about the anthem at Duma also (same day) everything changed on December 20, 2000.

"Патриотическая песнь" М.И.Глинки воплощает русский национальный мотив, и хороша именно как мелодия ☝️ Часто слова, искуственно приделанные, приляпанные к мелодии, когда они не рождаются вместе с мелодией, как цельное произведение, как цельная песня, а потом искуственно приляпывается - только портят, опошляют, вульгаризируют мелодию ☝️ 😌 Есть русские гимны со словами - "Коль славен", например. И национальная мелодия - мелодия Глинки. Без слов. Отсутствие слов - это не изъян, а достоинство, "изюминка", особенность её, не баг, а фича ☝️😌
The old anthem reminds me of Catherine the Great, Faberge eggs and Russia on the right side of history. The USSR anthem reminds me of Stalinism, the molotov ribbentrop pact with the Nazis, and sadness.
