Nail Biting Drive: Driving through Pennsylvania Turnpike Tunnel

- Experience this nail-biting drive through this Pennsylvania Turnpike Tunnel in this thrilling video! Don't miss this intense ride through the tunnel !
In this video all traffic was diverted to the East Bound Tunnel, while the West Bound Tunnel was under construction. A little nerve racking driving through with west bound traffic flying by in close proximity of you. There was no room for error.

I like how so many commented that this is "no big deal". Having driven tractor-trailers through these tunnels when in this 2 way configuration, it is tight & concerning because there is no room for anybody else's errors. I can keep steady in my lane, but can all of them do the same? The only thing worse than this was that William Preston Lane Jr. Bridge (Delaware-Annapolis) anytime that was set for 2 way traffic. People would always ride the center line coming around the curve & I needed that room to keep my trailer off the curb-wall. Oh well, ignore the haters, some people just need stuff to flex about because their life is pretty shallow & they likely did, or still do- get bullied alot. They go to UA-cam comment sections to try to heal themselves as a form of therapy. It's a bit sad, for all of them. Take care & stay safe out there.
Thank you for sharing your experience! It really sheds light on the challenges truck drivers face. Your perspective is invaluable, and it’s important we all stay aware and safe on the roads. Thank you again, and be safe as well !
I live in PA and have drove the Pike many times. Tuscarora tunnel not bad at all. You should have driven the pike when the Sideling Tunnel was used. Now that was scary.
I can only imagine. Thank You for the comment and view !
Meh. If you live here it's no big deal. Those semi's have places to go too. I'm more nervous on the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia.
I appreciate the comment. When driving through it, with it being enclosed, if something went wrong, you had nowhere to go.

You mean the shurekill distressway?
I recall hearing A Philly area reporter calling the Schuykill the :Shorekill Crawlway. I have safely used the PA Turnpike since I got a license in 1968. The road is OK & the TC Commission tries to maintain the thing but the tolls are getting off the chart! We regularly use Route 30 instead - it's almost as quick on the rural parts.
@@wernwalunless the school buses are out!
I drive a lot of miles on interstates (mainly I-80 in northern PA) and have been doing so since the 80's (no I'm not a truck driver) and the aggressiveness/carelessness/lack of proper road etiquette among drivers has gotten progressively worse over the years. It doesn't surprise me that there are so many comments from "tough guys" (and girls) that act like this is no big deal. They fail to see or comprehend that despite the fact they themselves may be fully capable of staying in their own lane for the long stretch of tunnel, there are so many things that can go wrong that are completely out of their own control and that the tunnel allows them absolutely nowhere to go in order to avoid any such road hazards (such as truck tire blowout debris) or some other careless/distracted driver that crosses the center lane. These are probably the same idiots that refuse to put on their lights in a heavy rain so that other drivers can see them better.
Thank you so much for your comment, you bring up a lot of great points ! Stay safe my friend.
Heck, when I was a young driver all 7 tunnels were two way. They were smoky & very poorly lighted, single mercury fixtures about every 50 yards in the ceiling. The tunnels still being used are a thing of beauty! Just make sure your windows are closed.
Thank you for the comment and sharing, appreciate the view !
These tunnels leave little room to maneuver,
Exactly right, Thank you for your view and comment !
Sorry, not that big a deal. I've done it in a class A RV towing a car when it's been down to one lane each way. If you go to Colorado, don't ever try The Million Dollar Highway unless you carry a spare set of underwear.
Hey I appreciate the comment. I'll have to check out the Million Dollar Hwy. The thing is when driving through the tunnel, if something went wrong, you have no where to go.

Do you think that’s scary? You’re in a pick up truck doing 50 miles an hour. Try it in a big truck doing 65 be a man
The posted Speed Limit going through the tunnel is 40 MPH, so going 65 MPH through that tunnel with one lane in each direction is reckless. Thanks for the view and comment. By the way, here is a link to a fatal accident in that tunnel. www.wgal.com/article/second-fatal-crash-tuscarora-tunnel-pennsylvania-turnpike/43156864
Wow! That looks like one distracted, cell phone viewing driver away from a catastrophic mess!! Thanks for posting.
No doubt. Thank You for watching and the comment, I really appreciate it !
OH BROTHER!! It's no big deal! Give me a break! If you can't deal with driving STAY HOME!!

Folks it’s not that bad. i drove a semi through there for years. this illustration is a little far fetched.. it looks like that because the tunnel on the other side is being serviced. normally what u see is traffic uses both lanes in one direction and the other side has 2 lanes in the same direction. they do this when they have maintenance to do so it does look tight when they do this. but when they aren’t it’s fine.. happy driving. just don’t pass inside the tunnel.
Thank you for your comment and viewing.
Nail biting? 😂
Thank you for the comment

Stop nail biting keep hands on wheel and like sign says stay in lane.
Believe me, I'll stay in my lane. I'm more concerned with someone veering into me.
I’ll never understand what is so scary about this. Especially now that they upgraded and widened the lanes.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear different perspectives on the upgrades. Thank you for the view !
What's "nail biting" about it? If you stay in your lane, it's no problem. If you can't stay on your lane, you shouldn't be driving.
Not worried about me staying in my lane, but what about the other guy that may be distracted ? Here's a link to a fatal car crash in that exact tunnel. Thank you for the comment and view. Stay safe.

@@RoadTripPete-zw6kx - people cross the center line everywhere. I got wrecked a couple years ago by one - and no tunnel within 100 miles.
The tunnel is fear-inducing ONLY if you allow it.
Why would anyone pay the exorbitant turnpike fees when Interstates 70 and 80 cross the same distance for free?
I totally get it, PA has some of the most expensive tolls in the country. Only reason I drove it was because I have not gone that way in over 30 years. Just wanted to relive memories.
because you are older and need the travel plazas to stop
@@mcarlkv53 Thank you for the watch and comment ! That's a Great Point. I stopped at most of the travel plazas to either fill up or clean my windshield (lots of bugs). I found them to be clean and safe.
80 is way North for where I'm headed and West of this location 70 shares part of the turnpike from Breezewod to New Stanton. I can either pay the toll, or spend another hour and a half plus about twenty bucks more for gas in my van.
I stay off I-80 because of its poor safety record overall. Plus, it's not a joy in the winter weather.
Not much wider than a the vehicles going through it,
and what looks like drop-inlets on the right. If those
are drop-inlets, they always pull you over towards
the edge, and here you have no room.
I appreciate the comment and the view. Stay safe and Thank You !
I like how the speed drops to zero mph while inside the tunnel!
Yep, no signal. My XM went out too.
So many people here slow down as they approach the tunnel, but then get more comfortable and speed up as they go through. Plus, they speed up once they see the end light getting closer. That's why we call our tunnels slingshots.
At ease, you’re just being claustrophobic is all. Those tunnels are getting VERY old now and no doubt in dire need of rehabilitation. The first and only time I traveled the PA Turnpike was in 2009, west to east. If memory serves, the Allegheny and Tuscarora tunnels were in decent shape but the Kittatinny and Blue Mountain Tunnels further east were both in bad shape at the time with heavy water intrusion and concrete spalling. Most likely that’s why the west bound Tuscarora Mountain tunnel here is closed - so the concrete panels can be removed and replaced, new lighting and safety system upgrades installed, etc. it’s a pretty substantial job.

No our tunnels have received huge repairs, reinforcement and inspections in the last 7 years. From the turnpike to the tunnels all around Pittsburgh.
I don't get it! Is this click bait or what? I drive though tunnels all the time...?
The point point of the video is if someone veers into your lane, you got no where to go.
www.wgal.com/article/second-fatal-crash-tuscarora-tunnel-pennsylvania-turnpike/43156864
There is light at the end of the tunnel.
The reason it is "nail biting" is that there is NO MARGIN for ERROR.
Annoying music... turned it off.
Thank you for the comment
Yes, I agree with comment below, I've been driving these tunnels for 49 years, as far as nail biting there are far more dangerous, nerve-wracking stretches of highways than these!
Thank you for the comment and the watch.
Do t know why but every 4 wheeler has to drop there speed limit to go thu a tunnel that is plenty wide and plenty high enough for a big rig. We called it the tunnel monster that made them screw up the flow of traffic
Thank you for the comment and the view, be safe !
There was nothing dramatic about that. It's essentially a straight stretch of highway with no shoulder on either side. There is nothing inherently dangerous in that. Try some of the roads in Switzerland! With tens of hairpin curves and no barriers.
Thank you for the comment

If you bite your nails on a drive like that, what do you do in the dark in pouring rain or on a snow-covered mountain road? Driving in a straight tunnel is a piece of cake; stay in your lane, stay off your damn phone (you probably lose service anyway), and don't tailgate.
Thanks for the comment

? Only thing unusual is 2 way traffic in the tunnel. Other then that, get used to it. Depending on where you are you might be doing this 3 more times.
@@stampeedvalkyrie Appreciate the view and the comment. Thank you !
Two way traffic in this tunnel was because of construction.
Done that many times and not scary for us.
Thank you for watching and the comment
Outdated tunnel.
Thank you for watching and your comment.
That was truly a harrowing experience! I can't believe they let cars in there like that. They should paint a line down the middle of the road or something so that you know which side to stay on.
Thank you for the comment

CLICK BAIT, TWO THUMBS DOWN. WOW! Imagine driving in a tunnel and STAYING IN ONE LANE ! ! OMG the horror, the pure terror, the skill required !
That's 2:46 of my life I'll never get back....
Wow, sorry you feel that way. A lot of people actually enjoy the video. I’ll include a link of a fatal accident in that exact tunnel when someone veered into the opposite lane. Thanks for the watch anyways.
